Patriots sign tight ends Butler and Ellis

Patriots have signed 27 year old tight end Paul Butler to a contract. Butler is a 6'6" 260 pound division two quarterbacks. NESN's Doug Kyed reported the signing at about 8am monday morning.

Kyed tweeted, "The Patriots are signing TE Paul Butler, per source. Adds needed veteran tight end depth in training camp."

In college Butler was listed as a fullback by the Valcans. Butler caught 32 catches for 381 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Butler is known as a blocking tight end.

Just under two seasons ago, Butler worked  out with Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino and Former Patriots receiver Antonio Brown. Butler has made a few highlight catches in practice but has not made enough to make any NFL stats.

The one good thing about signing Butler is that he can be signed to the practice squad. The Patriots have several tight ends that can be signed to the practice squad. With Butler being able to play tight end and being so tall, he has better odds of sticking around the team in 2020.

Berndt Buchmasser also reported the team signed tight end is Alex Ellis. "Ellis was worked out by the Patriots on Sunday and will now add experience to a tight end group also consisting of Ryan Izzo as well as rookies Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene, Jake Burt and Rashod Berry."

Ellis is 6'4" 245 pounds who has 3 years NFL experience. He runs a 4.57 and a 6.87 three cone drill. He played in six games, and caught 3 passes for 11 yards. Ellis is known for his blocking. In college he played in 10 games and caught 14 catches for 232 yards and 1 touchdowns.

Ellis's scouting reports are buried in the internet. There's not much telling if he is an inline or H-back blocking tight end. Ellis should also be eligible for the practice squad.
