Draft Point Systems Vary In Quality

This is my first year using the draft point system. I forgot which one I originally started with and ended up using the pro football reference site. It stops at pick 256 unfortunately and seems like it rips off teams when trading down. See picture below. So I decided to try a different site.

I tried the CBS ranking system and am not happy with it either. Take a look at my Mock using it. I am not happy with it as some trades and it under values picks in my opinion.

CBS's Draft point system say the number 14 pick isn't worth a first second and fourth. CBS says instead of the fourth, says It's worth a first, second, fifth and sixth. It's not a bad haul but it should be able to get more.

Just beware if you use the point system, some overv

2023 Patriots Mock Draft With Realistic Trades According To The Point System.

The New England Patriots are walking into the draft with 11 draft picks in 2023. The Patriots need to make a splash and using the Draft Point system, I have figured out a few draft weekend trades that the Patriots could make to help them build for 2023 and the future. With a Mock at the end.

Currently the Patriots have the following eleven draft selections in 2023: 14th, 46th, 76th, 107th, 117th, 135th, 184th, 187th, 192nd, 210th and 245th draft pick.

On day one of the draft, I have the Patriots making two trades.

The first trade I have the Patriots making is with the Giants but they could also make basically the same trade with the cowboys. The Patriots will trade back the number 14 pick and get the 25th, 57th, and 128th pick.

The Patriots then trade back up into the first round with the Eagles. The Patriots will send the 46th, 76th and 192nd to Philly in exchange for 30th, 94th and 219th draft pick.

Resetting the Patriots draft board after that gives the Patriots the following picks: 25th, 30th, 57th, 94th, 107th, 117th, 128th, 135th, 184th, 187th, 210th, 219th and 245th draft pick.

The Patriots will then make a late day two trade sending the 135th and 245th pick to the Titans for the 147th and 228th selections.

Again, resetting the Patriots draft board after that gives the Patriots the following picks: 25th, 30th, 57th, 94th, 107th, 117th, 128th, 147th, 184th, 187th, 210th, 219th and 228th draft pick.

On day three the Patriots will make a pair of trades.

The Patriots will trade up, sending the 184th and 187th to the Saints for the 146th and 257th selections.

The Patriots than make a late day three trade sending the 219th and 228th picks to Cincinnati for the 206th and 246th selections.

It is not uncommon for Belichick to make that many selections. In 2009, 2010 and in 2015 the Patriots made 12 draft selections. Since the Brady draft in 2000, the Patriots have had 10 drafts with 10 or more draft selections.

The Patriots draft would look something like (*via trade):
*25th: Emmanuel Forbes, CB, MSST
*30th: Dawand Jones, T, OHST
*57th: Jordan Battle, ALA
*94th: Davis Allen, TE, Clem
107th: Moro Ojomo, DT/DL, Tex
117th: Andrei Losivas, WR, Princeton
*128th: Kyu Blu Kelly, CB, Stan
*146th: Nick Broeker, IOL, Miss
*147th: Hunter Luepke, FB/HBack, NDST
*206th: Leonard Taylor, TE, Cinn
210th: Evan Hull, RB, NWST
*246th: Ethan Evans, P/K, Wingate
*257th: David Durden, WR, UWF

What To Expect From The Draft, If The Patriots Think They Have A Winning Team On Wednesday March 22.

Before week one of the 2022 season, I was telling everyone that the New England Patriots were a wildcard team until someone takes their spot away from them. It took until the end of the season for them to finally be ruled out. Andrew Callahan said on his podcast per his sources, that the Patriots thought they fielded a double digit win team.

Many people will agree that the Patriots two biggest problems in 2022 was a lack of a number one outside boundary corner. And a lack of an offensive coordinator. The team addressed one of those needs by bringing back offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

Andrew Callahan said per his sources that the team still believes they have a double digit win team. After this point in free agency. Here's what's happened so far and then I'll tell you what how I think they'll approach the draft if true.

The Patriots acquired Special Teams Linebacker Chris Board, Tight End Mike Gesicki, Running Back James Robinson, Hybrid Slot Receiver Juju Smith-Schuster, Tackle Reilly Reiff and Calvin Anderson.

The Patriots brought back Special Teamers Cody Anderson and Matthew Slater, Defensive Tackles and Carl Davis,  Daniel Ekuale, Long Snapper Joe Cardona, Line Backer Mack Wilson and Raekwon McMillan, Safety Jabrill Peppers, Corner Jonathan Jones, Linemen James Ferentz and Conor McDermott.

But they lost Running Back Damien Harris, Receiver Jakobi Meyers, Tight End Jonnu Smith, Safety Devon McCourty, Punter Jake Bailey and Quarterback Brian Hoyer. And Receiver Nelson Agholor remains a free agent.

If the Patriots believe that the current roster is a double digit win team. They're going to be looking for developmental players that are projected starters in two or three seasons in the draft. And number one corner becomes the top priority.

Being with how the team is set and with what Callahan said, the Patriots may trade up now for a corner. I did not see that as a realistic option but the odds have to have increased.

To that, the Patriots need to make sure they bring a Tackle, Tight End and Safety all with potential starting talent. All three positions are going to need a starter in 2024. Mills should replace McCourty in 2023. Those four positions would be their most urgent needs, along with Punter. If the Patriots

If the team is going back to the "Brady" offense, the team does not have a fullback and can easily acquire one. The Patriots also have a huge question for receiving back. Pierre Strong and James Robinson are both question marks as far as their ability. And J.J. Taylor hasn't shown his blocking ability has improved. The Patriots need to be certain who will be the guy.

Stevenson cannot handle making all those touches, he was burnt-out at the end of the season. The team needs to fix that and being the role needed, that can be a day three selection. Bill Belichick can and will deliver a Belichick draft. Again this is all based on if Callahan's information is legit.

And if anyone is wondering who Bill's division two guy will be, check out X-Receiver and Kick Returner David Durden from UWF. He's 6'2", 200 pounds and is supposed to run a high 4.37 forty according to seniorbowl.com. He's also supposed to run a 7 second three cone as well if my memory serves me. That would put him in the top 6 for forty times and top eleven for three cone for Receivers. His red flag is he has a baseball contract with the Red Socks and doesn't need football, so his commitment has been called into question.

Gotta love the offseasn, right? So many possibilities, regardless of the probabilities.

Meyers Heads To Vegas, And The Patriots Have Another Hole.

The Patriots reportedly are losing Jakobi Meyers to free agency. Tuesday morning It was reported that Meyers signed with the Raiders. This comes after fans were suggesting dumping Meyers all the way up to the 53 man cut-down.

Meyers age 26, has been the Patriots most reliable receiver for two seasons. And has proved his worth since being signed as a udfa in 2019.

Meyers played in 60 games for the Patriots. He caught 235 of his 344 targets for 2,758 yards with 8 touchdowns. Meyers also threw for 2 touchdowns over that span. Not bad for a guy nobody wanted.

Meyers will reunite with Josh McDaniels in Vegas. And being that the team is already stacked with talent, Meyers should be at least as productive as Welker was in Denver. Well providing they can get good quarterback play from Jimmy Garoppolo.

This is a case of be careful what you ask for. Patriots Nation better hope the Patriots know what they're doing. I get in Bill we trust but he couldn't be trusted to bench Cam in 2020 and he couldn't be trusted to revert back to the Brady offense last year.

They are talking to Philip Dorsett. There were talks of converting him to slot last time he was here before his time was cut short. Everyone wants the Patriots to get faster and Dorsett would do that and he provides veteran leadership at age 30. Edelman played until 34, so no reason to think Dorsett couldn't be here a few seasons. If he can play slot that is.

The Patriots went from needing a two tackles, a receiver and a developmental interior lineman prospect to needing two tackles, a tight end, two receivers and a developmental starting interior lineman prospect. To quote Matthew Slater, Patriots Nation, "how do we feel"

There's No Clear Answer On If Pierre Strong Is The New Receiving Back.

Do the Patriots need a receiving back. The question depends on what they have in Pierre Strong. If Strong can catch and block decently, the Patriots have their third down back.

Here were some positives that were said about Strong in his draft profiles:

Bleacher Report's Nate Tice wrote, "He (Strong) has above-average hands when coming out of the backfield and has potential as a receiver on screens with his explosive-play ability."

Richie Whitt of SI wrote, "In the passing game, he’s shown sufficient hands out of the backfield. He is a definite threat in space when he gets the ball on a check-down. He is physical and willing in pass protection but should be better in this regard with pro coaching."

Bernd Buchmasser of Pats Palpit wrote, "A dual-threat back, who has proven himself capable of making plays on the ground and in the passing game, he has combines speed, explosiveness and agility."

Here are some negatives that were said at the same time:

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com said, "Strong lacks third-down value at this time, but has shown enough to believe it could be in his future."

Boston.com's Conor Roche said, "While Strong was dominant on the ground in 2021, he didn’t bring much in the receiving game."

Oliver Hodgkinson of PFN wrote, "Although he’s showcased some natural technique as a pass catcher, there are question marks here. South Dakota State didn’t frequently utilize Strong as a pass-catching back."

Jake Oliver of Dynasty Nerds wrote, "The biggest issue Strong has is with his blocking. He will throw his entire body at a charging defender, but he is still learning how to block without doing that."

My thoughts

Most of the positives about Strong were based on projection and most of the negatives were admittedly based on limited opportunities. So what the Patriots have in Strong is only known to those who were part of the 2022 Patriots organization. All we know for certain is he looked good in 2022, catching all seven targets but like in college, it was in limited oppertunity.

Keep an eye on if the Patriots acquire any backs with receiving ability between now and training camp. That's basically the only way to have an idea of how the see him. I have a few rookie prospects on my list that could fit the team's need.

As far as Damien Harris's role, Kevin Harris will be fine. Draft a fullback and let Kevin Harris rotate with Stevenson. Receiving back and Fullback are the Patriots only needs in the backfield.

New England Patriots 2023 Draft Prospect List 2.0

The Patriots have needs and there are plenty of prospect available. I had originally had approximately 130 prospects without linebackers. Around 10 of the original 130 went back to school so I removed them and added linebackers.

Each name is linked to a report, usually the draft network with three bonus reports if possible and I tried to keep them no older then December. A few prospects had little information to share. I am also including rankings from three sites. Warning there are prospects from outside the first two rounds.

*Don't be surprised if the Patriots trade back to the 25th or 26th pick for a first, second and fourth round this year. If you follow the point system, that's what the 14th pick is worth.

Defensive Linemen Prospects
The Patriots still need a pocket disrupting defensive tackle that can stop the run to pair with the pass rusher Barmore.

I recommend the Draft Network and Steelers Depot as two good scouting sources. There are some other ones I use but their consistency just doesn't add up. It's sad for me to say but as a Pats fan,  Steelers media does a better job at scouting draft prospects as I might have used one Pats media source.
