Belichick brings the Patriots back to 80 players just in time for camp

Monday was a busy day for the Patriots, as Belichick and the staff were busy signing players. It started early Monday with Ian Rapaport announcing the Patriots had signed a tight end and defensive lineman.

Rapaport tweeted, "The #Patriots are hosting FAs TE Jordan Leggett and DT Darius Kilgo, and if all goes well with COVID-19 testing and physicals, they plan to sign both, sources say. Leggett is a former #Jets fifth-rounder and Kilgo is a former 2016 #Broncos sixth rounder who has spent time in NE."

These moves come as the Patriots are trying to make sure they have the answered for the departures of Danny Shelton and Matt Lacosse. Shelton was a key piece of the 2019 defense, while Lacosse was the only tight end with experience.

Kilgo is still pretty young. At 6'3" 312 pounds, he hasn't done much in the NFL, playing in 29 games over 3 seasons. 16 tackles, 1 quarterback hit and 1 pass deflected. Kilgo was predicted to be a day three run defending nose tackle who wouldn't see many passing downs. Kilgo could be a sign that the Patriots intend to continue their 34 defensive base.

Jordan Leggett is another one of those young tight ends that bounce around and the Patriots take a chance on. Leggett suffered an injury with the jets and then found himself on the Buccaneers practice squad. Bruce Arians doesn't know how to utilize tight ends so his development has to of been stunted. The biggest weakness of Leggett was his blocking.

Leggett is 6'5" 258 pounds. He played in 15 games and started 4 for the jets. He was targeted that year 24 times but only caught 14 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Izzo was more productive for the Patriots in his 6 games during the 2019 season.

Leggett can line up anywhere including in the backfield, which will give the Patriots another H-Back (Fullback) and slot receiver. The problem coming out of college for Leggett was that he was inconsistent. That's why the Jets were so quick to let him go.

According to Adam Schefter, "Former Texans’ RB Lamar Miller and the Patriots reached agreement on a one-year deal, pending a physical, per @RosenhausSports."

Miller is coming off an ACL injury that costed him his 2019 season. Sony Michel is not ready until week one. Brandon Bolden opted out and there is rumors floating the Rex Burkhead is on his way out. Miller is a duel threat and could help the Patriots as he finishes his career.

One more thing about Miller. Scouts thought that if he couldn't make a team's rotation as a rookie, that he would at least contribute as a return man. So Miller has that ability if Belichick wants to try him there.

The Patriots also resigned their emergency center from 2019, Tyler Gauthier who was released by the Jaguars. With Marcus Cannon opting out and David Andrews returning from a life threatening Illness, The Patriots need to make sure their line is secure.

This fills the Patriots roster but does not mean the team done making moves. The Patriots also traded for defensive back Michael Jackson from Detroit and brought back Quarterback Brian Lewerke and receivers Isaiah Zuber and Will Hastings.

The Patriots scouting department also received bad news on Monday. The Big Ten and the Mountain West Postponed their college seasons with expectations that they are canceled. More NCAA college football division are expected to follow suit as the NCAA dropped the ball.

Once the Patriots finalize their 2020 roster, it's going to be a lot of watching film going back to 2015 at the earliest to make sure they haven't missed anything. Add to that the Patriots may lose half to three fifths their free cap space in 2021. Belichick cannot catch a break and thus are expected to roll over as much cap from 2020 as possible.

Update as if 8am in Tuesday let Field Yates of ESPN, "The Patriots will not be signing TE Jordan Leggett, per source.

The team could look at other available options to add depth at the position, with Dalton Keene and Devin Asiasi projecting for key roles as rookies."
