Over the past two seasons, with Injuries and the talent on the roster, Rivers has been buried on the team's depth chart. Only seeing the field littleniver 12% of the time he's been a Patriot.
According to Phil Perry Rivers has been one of the better linebackers in camp this year for the Patriots.
Perry isn't alone as NESN's Zack Cox is also singing the praises of the linebacker about to enter his fourth season. Cox wrote, "Rivers has been a bright spot in New England’s outside linebacker battle through the team’s first nine open practices."
Rivers needs to do everything he can this season to prove his worth. To say his last three seasons have been uninspiring would be an understatement. Prior to this camp, he would be questionable even as a practice squad member.
Coach Belichick said about Rivers, "He's had a very good camp and really is playing with a lot of confidence. He's gained a lot of strength and explosiveness, as well as rehabbing the injury . . . His overall body composition, strength, power is good."
The question for Rivers has never been his physical ability but making mental mistakes that cost the Patriots. Too often he's called on a penalty. Hopefully, Steven Belichick can fix what his predecessor couldn't with Rivers but so far Derek is looking like a new player.
