Andy Dalton Receiving Interest From New England

The Bengals cut "Big Red" Andy Dalton in a move to create cap space, after drafting Burrow. Dalton helped the Bengals decision by requesting his release.

There maybe interest by the Patriots according to Tyler Dragon. "The Jaguars and Patriots are among the teams interested in Andy Dalton, per a source." The Patriots have been reportedly linked to Dalton since late February.

The Patriots signing Dalton would create a three way quarterback competition between himself, Stidham, and Hoyer. At the very least, Dalton would bring experience and leadership to the Patriots.

Head coach Zac Taylor said this of his former quarterback, “His teammates and coaches appreciate his leadership and his commitment to winning." Traits Belichick looks for in his players.

Dalton has had success in the NFL but has been in decline for the past three seasons. Dalton led the Bengals to the playoffs 4 years straight, starting in 2011, earning two pro bowl selections. He has a career record of 70 wins and 61 losses. 

Marty Fenn noted "The 32-year-old went 2-11 in 13 starts with the Bengals last season, completing less than 60 percent of his passes while also throwing 14 interceptions."

Teams aren't currently looking for starting quarterbacks. Dalton joins Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, and Blake Bortles in the free agency pool. Sean Peyton just pulled Winston from the deep end, making him Drew Brees's backup for the 2020 season.

Nobody can replace Brady. Tom Brady is considered the Greatest quarterback of all time. At 43 Brady has continued to put up decent numbers for an NFL quarterback. The Patriots aren't expecting anyone to do so either. Thus the Patriots aren't looking for Brady's replacememt but instead a game manager that can produce.

Dalton is a low Risk investment. Dalton's decline has been partially a product of circumstance. Dalton has not had healthy pass catchers in the past several seasons. Dalton's former number 1, AJ Green hasn't played a full year since 2016. His best tight end Eifert, in 2019 played more than 10 games for the first time since 2013. 

The Patriots currently have $1.7 million in free cap space. Signing Dalton at the moment will consume most, if not all of that cap space. Forcing the Patriots to scramble to create cap space, if needs arise.

Dallas Cowboys Sign Andy Dalton To 1-year Deal.

Adam Schefter reported Big Red signed with the Cowboys on Saturday. "Former Bengals’ QB Andy Dalton is signing a one-year deal worth up to $7 million that includes $3 million guaranteed with the Dallas Cowboys, source tells ESPN."

Dalton lives in Texas, so his work commute will be shorter in the fall. Which means he'll get to spend more time with family. 

Andrea Hangst of Clutch Point wrote that Dalton shouldn't effect the Prescott signing, and that Dalton was no more than an Insurance policy. 

Dalton however allows the Cowboys to trade Dak this year or even next year. Question is what will teams pay for Prescott? If the Cowboys are able to resign Dak, they could trade Dalton after the season before he officially becomes a free agent. 

This is an interesting story and one that should be paid attention to as the off season progresses.
