Redskins HC Ron Rivera Shares Thoughts On Signing Cam Newton

It was expected by many that Rivera and Newton would be a package deal in Washington. Newton's only really played for coach Rivera, However "Super" Cam is still a free agent.

Rivera beat around the subject and hinted he had his quarterbacks but gave no real answer on Good Morning Football this Thursday. 

“You know, the thing about Cam really is the situation …We’re in a situation where we’ve got two really young quarterbacks, one that’s been with us, been in the system, understands how we want things done and the other one is a guy who was taken last year in the first round and shows some promise.I think with Cam, and I have thought about it, I mean, it’s something that’s run through my mind, and it’s about the situation and circumstances. I’m not sure I would do it. I’m not sure if I wouldn’t do it. It depends on circumstances.”

According to Hunter Noll of clutch point "The Redskins already have Dwayne Haskins. The 22-year-old had an up-and-down rookie season in 2019, but it ended on a high note where his on-field performance was concerned."

Rivera already signed one former Panthers' quarterback, in Allen.  Newton still being a free agent this late into the off season will effectively lower his asking price, if Rivera or anyone else wants to take the risk. 

Newton is one of four starters still waiting on the free agent market, along with Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, and Blake Bortles. 

The Redskins appear to already have their starter and backup quarterback locked up. The odds of them bringing in Newton appear low but as former Falcons HC Jerry Glanville used to say "You know what NFL stands for Not For Long!" ; NFL roster are ever evolving.

One could make the case, the reason these four have not been added to a quarterback room, is because it's about quality over quantity.

Redskins AP will have to fight to stay on top

Adrian Peterson enters the 2020 season fifth on the NFL all time rushing list. He is just under 1,100 yards shy of taking the 4th spot. The only active player above him is Frank Gore. This will be AP's 14th season.

Peterson spoke with John Keim of espn.  

“I’ve always had the mindset of being open to competition … So I will embrace it the same way. People ask me that question all the time — ‘Man, the Redskins are really packing that running back room, huh?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, they are.’ But hey … just gotta execute and produce. I’m not that guy that’s gonna withhold something to give myself an edge … A lot of these guys looked up to me — and still do — at a young age. So I’m going to do my part.”

The Redskins brought in several backs this offseason to improve their running game. Peterson is going to have to fend off his fellow teammates if he wants to hold on to the number one spot. 

See the thing is Peterson is 35. That's old for running backs. Running backs are considered old by 30. Peterson at the moment is living on Borrowed time as far as his career goes.

Peterson is under contract for $2.5 million in 2020 with a $3.25 million cap hit. Without ticket revenue, there's that much extra pressure for AP to show Dan Snyder that he's worth the extra money.
