The Patriots Release New Uniforms

On the morning of April 20th, the New England Patriots released new uniforms. Many fans had Hopes for specific uniforms, including myself. Not everyone got what they wanted.

The home jerseys are pretty much what I was hoping for. While I was hoping for a lighter shade of blue, I got the "color rush" concept. My only disappointment is the team kept the silver paint instead of going to the flying elvis on a white helmet.
For the away I was completely disappointed as the uniform looks like the team is biting off the New York Giants. While I was hoping for a color rush white, I didn't get anything I wanted. The uniform would look better with red pants. The Patriots colors are supposed to be what the team represents.

The Red, White, and Blue, the American Patriot. The team stuck with blue bottoms, and again went with the silver flying elvis. For the away helmets, I wanted the old Patriots Pat logo on a modern white helmet. I guess there is some rule that they cannot use two helmets. It's BS. Here is the away uniform.
Love them or hate them, the Patriots are going to look different from here on out. Not only is Tom gone, but so are his jerseys. As we usher in a new era, we'll have quite a bit to get used to. Patriots Nation, how do we feel?

The New England Patriots could target Tua Tagovailoa after all.

There is expecting that Tua won't make it out of the top ten. Tua has television scouts, sports writers and fans everywhere drooling over the prospect of their team signing him. The Alabama quarterback is a hot commodity.

There is injury concern with Tua. It started with a hip injury but teams looked deeper at the NFL Combine. Teams looked into past leg and wrist injuries and what they found has caused many teams to reportedly question the durability of the former Alabama quarterback.

At the Combine Tua measured in at six foot tall and weighted 217 Lbs. NFL.com compared him to former Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell. Brunell is a player many current Patriots fans only know from his days at ESPN. Few remember how much trouble he gave the Patriots in the 90s.

Tagovailoa has all the skills one looks for in a starting quarterback. He is a dual threat quarterback, which will allow for a diverse playbook. While he needs development in a few areas and is not the best under pressure, he should be able to keep plays alive just long enough for teams to put points on the board.

DJ Siddiqi of Clutch Point wrote "The New England Patriots could target Tua Tagovailoa after all." Siddiqi quoted Mel Kiper Jr. as saying "You know the connection with Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. And I know how Nick feels about Tua.” Siddiqi continued "despite his durability concerns, Kiper dismissed that notion, saying “quarterbacks don’t get hurt.”

Kiper went on to make this tongue twister of a statement, “If you go from Tom Brady to Tua, a healthy Tua. Now, that is the thing — can you keep him healthy? People say, ‘Well, everybody gets hurt.’ Quarterbacks don’t get hurt. Brady had the one injury when (Matt) Cassel came in. (Dan) Marino had the Achilles one year. Most of these quarterbacks, Eli (Manning) played forever, (Philip) Rivers, (John) Elway, (Jim) Kelly, when do these guys get hurt? The quarterbacks, when do they get hurt? This guy has had significant injuries, so to me, if he starts slipping a little bit, sliding down, where it happened with Aaron Rodgers not that long ago, and he was projected to be No. 1 two weeks before that draft and he went in the 20s, yes, if it did happen, I would think New England would be aggressive to try and go up and get him.”

People, especially Patriots fans are looking down on and disrespecting the Patriots current quarterback depth chart. While not elite, Hoyer and Stidham are still better then several current starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Mel Kiper is also forgetting about RG3 and Deshaun Watson's rookie seasons, both suffered major injuries. Where's RG3 now, not in Washington.

The Patriots do their homework and are just as opportunistic as the next team. Belichick is a cerebral assassin, and knows how to get teams to give up players they shouldn't. If Tua passed Belichick's requirements and falls to where the Patriots think they can get him, expect Belichick and company to make a move to get their pick.

The NFL draft is this Thursday and with all the rumors and speculations floating around, anything is possible, including Tagovailoa be taking with the 23rd pick.

Four Trade Partners for The Patriots to ship Rex Burkhead to.

The Patriots have too many backs and are in need of cap space and have other needs the team must address. Bolden is safe as he doubles a special team's player. White is too valuable as he can do it all. Michel is a former first round pick and is expected to be a part of the future for some time to come. The Patriots just spent a 3rd round pick on Harris, they're not going to trade him away so quickly. Burkhead is 29 years old and slated with a cap hit of $3.9 million. The team could save $2.9 million by trading him. Burkhead could be moved for a sixth round pick. There are several teams who could use a running back and a few likely trade partners.

Matt Harmon wrote an article, the top 10 worst running back depth charts. After scanning his list, I have found four possible trade partners for the Patriots concerning Rex Burkhead between now and the draft.

1) The Buccaneers, for they might be the best fit. The team needs a receiving back and Burkhead can deliver. The bonus for them is Brady's familiarity with Burkhead.

"Regardless of just how much you think Brady has left, who lines up alongside him in the backfield will matter...Now, if the team adds someone later on who might just fill that receiving role, a committee will begin to take shape." Said Matt Harmon of Yahoo Sports.

2) The Redskins are another possible option. The Redskins offense was dismal in 2019.  Burkhead would be a reliable check down to a developing quarterback. Burkhead's ability to run as well as catch, would open up the Redskins' playbook.

Matt Harmon  wrote "Peterson is 35 years old, the last grains of sand falling from his NFL hourglass. Meanwhile, Guice has been a major injury risk to this point in his pro career. The team could be looking at a constantly churning 2020 rotation of this strange cast of characters, or they can add something more steady."

3) "Pittsburgh can’t find themselves back in a situation where they’re ever, trotting out Jaylen Samuels as anything more than a bit player. Even 2019 rookie Benny Snell looked like just a guy in relief." Said Harmon when talking about having to relieve Conner.

James Conner cannot stay healthy. The Steelers don't have much behind him and are in a tough division.  Everyone knows Mike Tomlin plans for the Patriots each year. What better than to sign a player familiar with their playbook, their schemes, and can contribute to the Steelers football team?

4) The Chargers offense should be changing with Philip Rivers is gone. The team is expecting to draft a quarterback to sit behind underrated Journeyman Tyrod Taylor. The Chargers don't need a starting running back and like with the Redskins, Burkhead can be a security Blanket for a young Rookie. Burkhead would become the chargers' third down and receiving back instantly.

Harmon wrote "the Chargers will have to address the backfield at some point in the NFL draft. Even if you think Ekeler is fine to push 250 touches (224 last year) going forward, Justin Jackson is the only other back on the roster. Jackson looks like he can play but more competition is required."

It is clear the Chargers are in need, and would most likely spend a day three pick on a running back in the draft. Why not float the possibility of Burkhead out there.

While there are other teams in need, The Chargers, Redskins, Steelers, and Buccaneers are all teams in need that won't have much impact on the Patriots playoff wimdow. What makes Burkhead valuable is his experience. Unlike with rookies, anyone who trades for Burkhead won't have to worry about developing him. The Patriots should cast him out like a fly on a hook and see if anyone bites the bait. It's unclear what exactly teams will pay for a 29 year old running back but a day three pick is clearly worthy giving up, and someone should be hungry enough to make the trade.

Joe Thuney's future With The Patriots Looking Bleak.

Joe Thuney's future in New England uncertain, could be traded writes DJ Siddiqi of Clutch Point.

The New England Patriots tagged Joe Thuney who is arguably one of the best guards in the league. Thuney at 27 is still young and has never missed a game in his four seasons.

Many Patriots fans got excited as it was a sign the team was trending in the right direction. Knowing the Patriots have Thuney, it gives many of Patriots Nation hope for the 2020 season. Fans patiently wait to hear Thuney and the organization have reached a long term deal.

DJ Siddiqi says "According to a report from ESPN’s Mike Reiss, both sides haven’t been close to a contract extension. In fact, Reiss not only states there is no imminent contract extension in place, he also reports that Thuney could be traded. Reiss mentions that a possible trade bears watching during the NFL Draft this upcoming weekend."

“With the Patriots tight against the salary cap (about $1 million in space), and having surprisingly assigned the franchise tag to starting left guard Joe Thuney at the top-of-the-market figure of $14.78 million, Thuney’s future with the franchise bears watching during the draft. If a guard-needy team is willing to deal a second- or high third-rounder to help fill in the Patriots’ draft board, that would have to be something Belichick seriously considers with the knowledge that the sides haven’t been close to an extension. Thuney holds notable leverage because of the high franchise-tag figure.”

Reading what Reiss said, one must feel a little down. For when healthy, the Patriots have one of if not the top offensive line in the NFL, and Patriots Nation has been wanting to see what the running game can do, when all the clogs are working properly.

If a trade were to occur, It would not be surprising to see the Patriots trade Thuney and then pick up a top guard like Netane Muti from Fresno St or Jonah Jackson from the Buckeyes of Ohio State.

The Patriots have 2019 draft steals Yodny Cajuste and Hjalte Froholdt returning from injury. The team also just got "Eluemunated", as they resigned former fifth round pick Jermaine Eluemunor. The team might not need to spend a premium pick on an offensive lineman.

The Patriots could load up on Picks with Thuney. A second and a fifth, or a third and fourth could be a fair Trade. While it's doubtful the Patriots will take a top quarterback, moving Thuney could Bring in a tier 2 talent. Jalen Hurts or as much as it pains me to say it Jacob Eason, could be possible selections if the Team acquires more picks.

All eyes are now on New England, as who they draft might be more important in the Sports world, than who goes number one overall. The Draft starts this Thursday, and could change the NFL landscape. The Patriots aren't showing Interest in Burton

DJ Siddiqi of Clutch Points wrote an article "Update on Patriots' interest in recently released TE Trey Burton"

The Bears cut Burton to save one million in cap space. However, they will still be on the hook for four million in guaranteed money.  And right now It's the fans, not the Patriots organization, that currently wants Burton, mainly because of the "Philly Special", many probably never heard of him before Superbowl 52.

DJ Siddiqi said "According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Patriots are not likely to sign the former Chicago Bears tight end. Burton was released by Chicago on Friday afternoon."
“There’s been some local fan interest in free agent tight end Trey Burton, who was just released by the Bears. But at the moment, it looks like a long shot that Burton would wind up with the Patriots, per source.” - Jeff Howe
Burton's lack of production was supposedly due to injury, as he was productive the season prior. A healthy Burton will be just as productive as he was prior to injury. Atleast that's what Siddiqi would have us believe. "In 16 starts in 2018, Burton caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six touchdowns." Says DJ Siddiqi.

The Patriots are down to two players with unproductive seasons in 2019 at the position and that is expecting to change via the draft.

Siddiqi says "Burton remains in the thick of his prime at just 28 years of age". With that he should remain a low cost option for 2020, if the Patriots are unable to fill team needs via the draft, and should be an upgrade at the position if healthy.

Billick claims Patriots will have future success

In one of Marty Fenn's more recent articles, the clutch points writer wrote an article Titled Former Coach Makes Bold Claim About The Patriots' Future Success after Tom Brady.

Billick is a former superbowl winning coach with the Ravens. In an article Karen Guregain wrote for the Boston Harold,

"Because the team is now faced with the transition of life after Brady, many are already writing off the Patriots. Billick was amused with that take.“You can go broke writing off the Patriots,” Billick said with a laugh. “But that was always with the combination of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Now, the quarterbacks you’re talking about, maybe they’re the guys, maybe they can do it … but that remains to be seen.“Obviously, that advantage for 20 years, knowing that each year, you can begin with, at least, ‘we got Tom Brady.’ You don’t have that now,” Billick went on. “You don’t have that stability. So, it’s going to be a change. I don’t know if I’d write them off, but I don’t know if you can go into every season and say this is a playoff team, or an elite playoff team. I don’t know if we can readily put them in that category.”

While there is uncertainty under center for the Patriots. Stidham is looking the starter clear starter as the team only brought in journeyman Brian Hoyer when they had many options. Stidham has potential but regardless the Patriots won last season because of their dominate defense, and there's little reason to think the Patriots will not do the same this year.

"In any case, the 2020 campaign will have a very different feel from previous seasons, regardless of whether the Pats are still able to reach the playoffs." Says Marty Fenn and I concur, Not seeing Tom Brady leading the Patriots is just going to feel strange but we'll adapt and overcome, just like we always have.

Kiper thinks Alohi Gillman To The Patriots

Recently I read the article Mel Kiper: Alohi Gillman could be the next Patriots sleeper. The article is written by Sam Marsdale of CBS Sports. I'm gonna break down the article so you don't have to read it. If you want to however, I'll share the link.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/mel-kiper-alohi-gillman-could-be-next-patriots-sleeper-player

Because Belichick has a history of success in the late rounds, Kiper thinks Bill will draft Alohi Gillmam. Kiper infers Gollman to be an undersized UDFA special teams prospect, and one that could play everywhere.

“He’s a solid kid. He’s a special teams guy going in. He’s probably a late-round possibility going in at best. He runs adequately. He’s got decent sideline-to-sideline range. He’ll be a special teams guy. He’ll hit you. He’ll tackle you. You know who he reminds me of? A guy Belichick would draft. Bill Belichick would look at Alohi Gilman … a late-round possibility for the New England Patriots. That’s the kind of guy that he likes. He’ll make his mark early on.” said Kiper.

Gillman not only tested well at the Combine but had some near top scores for his position. Before saying that Gillman is a tackling machine who can help in coverage, when he's not shutting down the run, Marsdale is quick to remind people Gillman is undersized.

"Gilman had a strong showing at the NFL Combine, which comes after a good week at the Senior Bowl. He checked in at 5-10 4/8 and 201 pounds. He had 9 2/8 inch hands and 30 7/8 inch arms, as well as a 74 inch wingspan" said Marsdale.

The article quotes Gillman as saying "he's always getting the "you can't play" and then playing to prove them wrong." Basically Gillman is coming in with a chip on his shoulder wherever he goes.

Altogether this is supposed to make Gillman a good fit for the Patriots, and if Gillman is put in the right position, It could be, The Patriots lost Nate Ebner and will need to replace him, so there maybe just a spot open in New England.

Josh McDaniels faces great test.

Josh McDaniels faces great test is the title of an article by Justin Trombino of Musket Fire. It goes like this.

"This upcoming season might be Josh McDaniels' greatest test as the offensive coordinator for the New england Patriots" Trombino said.

Where do I being? Basically in a nutshell Trombino said McDaniels has been around the Patriots for a while, and Although he is the offensive coordinator, he could leave any time to become a head coach. It would be remiss not to say I think that taking another NFL head coaching position would be a very bad decision for McDaniels career.

Trombino also implied McDaniels will have to show he can coach and more importantly win without Brady. Brady helped write the playbook but McDaniels can expand it without limitations, into one Stidham is more capable of running.

"It’s also fair to say that there may have been some play designs that have intrigued McDaniels over the years that he wasn’t able to ever run with Brady because they weren’t suited for his abilities — such as trickery plays that involve a mobile quarterback. Stidham is young, capable, and athletic enough to adjust and transition into any play design that McDaniels is interested in." Says Trombino

McDaniels gets to be the authority on the playcalling with an inexperienced NFL quarterback, and that is the challenge.

This is all assuming Stidham doesn't lose the starting job to Hoyer or anyone else.

Could The Patriots Start Brian Hoyer

The 2020 New England Patriots will have a new man under center. Tom Brady opted to leave the Patriots organization back in March, ending a twenty year marriage. The Patriots had options in free agency but chose to resign Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer joins Stidham in the Patriots quarterback room. Stidham beat out Hoyer for the backup job in 2019 but it's pretty clear the Patriots did not intend for Brady to walk away. If Brady had not left, the team would most likely continue to have Stidham sit and Develop behind Brady. With Brady gone the team needed a starter who was familiar with the system, enter Hoyer.

This is Hoyer's third stint with the team. If you read what was said about Hoyer in his scouting report, It's not hard to see why The Patriots drafted him or why they keep bringing him back. "Atleast adequate height and bulk for the position. Efficient game-manager. Reads defenses well and check downs quickly. Efficient set up and delivery. Good footwork. Over the top release. Throws the ball with enough zip to make every NFL throw. Good overall accuracy, especially in the short to intermediate areas. Can step up in the pocket to avoid the pass rush. Keeps his eyes downfield. Delivers a catchable ball that allows his receivers to make yardage after the catch. Stood out at the East-West Shrine Game practices as the group's best and most consistent passer." - NFL.com

Hoyer's ability to study film and prep the defense during the week leading up superbowl 53, is credited by many as to why the Patriots shutdown the Rams high scoring offense. That's something extremely difficult to teach and without Brady, The Patriots will look for Hoyer to pass on to Stidham or whomever is the future of the franchise.

Hoyer is 16-22 as a starter. Hoyer has played for New England, Cleveland, Houston, Arizona, Chicago, Indianapolis, and San Francisco. Hoyer had entered a dumpster fire with each of the other six teams. Hoyer's best season as a starter was in 2014, where he went 7-6 as a starter. It took two seasons for Hoyer to make progress in Cleveland, so of course the dumpster fire that Cleveland is, shipped Hoyer off for starting to put out that fire.

In his career, The Game-manager has completed 59.1 percent of his passes. He's thrown for 10,274 yards, averaging 7.0 yards per attempt. His touchdown to Interception ratio is 52-34. Hoyer also has 115 yards and 2 touchdowns on 105 carries.

Hoyer is not the long term solution for the Patriots but he can be a quick fix. Hoyer knows the playbook and was brought in under the condition he would have a chance to compete. Hoyer has seen different things and faced different situations in the NFL, that Stidham has not. Hoyer has the experience that could be good enough to lead the Patriots to another division crown.

I am not saying that Stidham could not be the Patriots starter in 2021. I am not saying he could not be the starter come December. What I am saying is that Hoyer could put the Patriots in the best position to win now and in the long run. Nobody knows what the Patriots have planned for their quarterback position but Hoyer allows for Belichick to breathe a sigh of relief. Belichick has been doing this for a long time, and In Bill I Trust.

How the Patriots could address all their needs in 12 picks.

The Patriots have needs, little money and 12 draft picks. It's uncertain if the Patriots will make moves to clear cap space before the draft, or wait to see who they select before making moves. It also is unclear if the Patriots will make trades to acquire more picks.

Since we don't know much except that the Patriots have needs, the Patriots may look to draft some hybrid players. With that in mind, I decided to look at what I thought the Patriots team needs were and to see if I could fill them all in 12 picks.

My beliefs are the Patriots need a backup Center, two tight ends, a receiver, fullback, and backup quarterback. On defense I have the team's needs at Tackle, Edge/End, two linebackers, and a safety/Nickleback. Plus a kicker and a return specialist.

At 23 I got Ross Blacklock from TCU. Blacklock is a versatile Tackle who can shift over to end.

At 87 I got Darrell Taylor from Tennessee. Taylor can put his hands in the dirt as a 43 End or stand up as a 34 OLB.

At 98 Albert Okwuegunam from Missouri was there. A tight end who can play Inline blocker, move tight end or H-back.

At 100 KJ Hill from Ohio State. A slot receiver who might be able to play flanker. That can also field punts.

At 125 Justin Strnad was selected from Wake Forest. Doesn't matter if it's 34 or 43, he's athletic enough to play any linebacker role.

At 172 I grabbed Yasir Durant Mizzou. While listed a guard, he should be able to be moved to center and has experience at tackle.

At 195 Jacob Breeland Oregon. Another Inline Blocker who can line up as the H-Back or move TE.

At 204 Raequan Williams from Michigan State. Another Tackle who can play End.

With the 212th pick, At linebacker and Fullback from The Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii Dayton Furuta.

With pick 213 Jaron Bryant Fresno St. Bryant  should be a safety or nickleback but can also add depth at corner.

At 230 Malcolm Perry Navy. Perry played Quarterback but is listed at WR and can play running back, kick returner, and gunner.

The last pick I got Rodrigo Blankenship kicker from Georgia but if I wanted a guy with the athletic ability to help elsewhere, I could've gone with Chase Vinatieri who should be developed into a receiver.

I didn't get heavy here into scouting the players selected. This article wasn't about that. What I have hoped to show, is that with a week away from the NFL draft, we can find versatile players in the draft. That Patriots Nation expand their mock draft boards to guys that fit team needs, and to show the Patriots in 12 picks can fill every need as long as the option is there

This mock draft doesn't even begin to imagine all the undrafted free agents Belichick could bring in to further supplement team needs. It's also limited by this writer's knowledge of draft Prospects and those available when I picked.

Should The Patriots See if there's anything special about Burton ?

Zack Cox wrote an article titled Bears Releasing Trey Burton; Should Patriots Sign Tight End? The Patriots are needing at tight end and cannot afford another year of career backup Matt Lacosse.

"An intriguing veteran tight end is hitting the open market. The Chicago Bears plan to release Trey Burton with two years remaining on the four-year, $32 million contract he signed in 2018, according to multiple reports Friday. Once they do, the 28-year-old will be free to sign with any team.

One club that could use his services is the New England Patriots, who ranked dead last in the NFL in receptions by tight ends in 2019 and have yet to address the position this offseason."

The Patriots were doomed from the start at tight end. Gronk takes too long to retire and costs them a chance at a tight end. ASJ signs, and later gets granted release to take care of personal problems. Ryan Izzo got banged up and had concussion issues. Ben Watson got suspended for testosterone, and well Matt Lacosse....

Burton's size is that of a fullback or overweight receiver. While he is a little short, in football, size doesn't always matter. The question is Productivity, can Burton deliver? The Patriots have had their share of duds at tight end and the last thing the club needs is another one.

"The former college quarterback also threw a touchdown pass against New England in Super Bowl LII, his final game with the Philadelphia Eagles." Said Cox.

Knowing Belichick and Patriots Nation, the fact that Burton had his best game against the Patriots, and was part of the "philly special", should have people screaming "Burton Get your Ass to Foxboro!"

"Injuries, though, are a significant concern with Burton. He sat out half of last season and was ineffective when active, catching just 14 passes in eight appearances..." "Chicago still owes Burton $4 million in guaranteed money, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, meaning he could be relatively affordable for a new team to sign."

With the Patriots in need of a tight end, Burton with his injuries and lack of production would be a player to sign if things go bad in the draft. Burton is getting paid and could be signed to a one year prove it deal, if he fails, he gets cut before season kick off.

Izzo was looking good for being thrust up the depth chart in 2019, before his concussion derailed his development and stunted his production. Tom Brady's lack of trusting young undeveloped pass catchers is sure to be another reason for Izzo's set back later in the year.

Good thing for Izzo, and the rest of the 2020 pass catchers that the Patriots have Jarrett Stidham throwing him the ball, instead of the 43 year old Buccaneers' quarterback. Whether the Patriots bring in Burton or not, the team clearly needs to do something at tight end.

Jacob Eason To The Patriots?

"6-foot-6, 231 pounds, 9 1/2-inch hands
Projected Round: Day 2 (2-3)
2019 Stats: 64.7 percent, 3,132 yards, 23 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 7.7 yards per attempt.

29 Game Career Stats: 59.8 percent, 5590 yards, 39 Touchdowns, 16 Interceptions , 7.2 yards per attempt. 132.3 QBR

Strengths: Arm strength, accuracy, deep passing, ball protection, size

Weaknesses: Pocket presence, poise under pressure, inexperience

Testing numbers: 4.89-second 40-yard dash, 7.51-second 3-cone drill, 4.64-second short shuttle, 27.5-inch vertical leap, 9-feet, 2-inch broad jump"

Since Doug has us looking at Eason's numbers. His career rushing stat line is 82 carries for -126 yards and 2 touchdowns. Don't expect him to scramble for the first down very often.

"Eason began his college career with Georgia, started as a freshman, got hurt in his sophomore season, was replaced by Jake Fromm amidst some whispers of his effort and then transferred to Washington, where everyone had only positive things to say about him. He had to sit out the 2018 season because of transfer rules. Eason left Washington after his junior season, which was unfortunate for multiple reasons." Said Doug Kyed

It's understandable that Eason was worried about a decline in his production. However, if Eason was worried about learning a new system, what does he think is going to happen when he gets to the NFL? Nobody is going to call Chris Petersen and say "Hey can you give us your playbook, we're adopting your system."

Eason likely hurt his draft stock by not returning to school but on the other hand, ask Jarrett Stidham what the risks of returning to school are when you're considered a first round prospect.

"Eason ranked 22nd among college quarterbacks with a 74.9 adjusted completion percentage", His deep passer rating ranked 41st among qualified college quarterbacks and his deep passing grade was 91.4." per Pro Football Focus.

Dropping by 19 spots, going from 22nd to 41st doesn't exactly inspire confidence in Eason's deep ball. That's an 86.36% decline in his accuracy. Although the deep ball hasn't been part of the Patriots offense, since the gun slinger Drew Bledsoe was dropping 72 yard bombs, it just doesn't bode well for the Huskie.

Eason doesn't turn the ball over much and has a quick release. "His 48.3 passer rating under pressure was one of the worst in college football last season" said Kyed. "PFF gave him just a 37.6 grade under pressure."

The Patriots faced the New York Jets in New Jersey and Sam Darnold on Monday Night Football, October 21st of last season, and the young quarterback must have felt like he was on the set of the Sixth Sense, because Darnold was caught telling his coaches and teammates that he was seeing ghosts on the field. This was in part to the Patriots relentless pass rush, and Darnold not coping well with the pressure. That night Darnold threw four picks. Does Bill Belichick really want to risk drafting Eason and he having to deal with an "I see dead people" moment of his own? Eason's QBR under pressure is so bad that even the CFL would have second thoughts, and they take anybody.

While it's fair to say Eason's production could've been due to circumstances, With Eason being projected a first round quarterback, are the Patriots really going to want to spend that kinda draft capital to develop a guy who just shook off the rust? So far Doug is describing a Day 3 UDFA.

Kyed goes on to say "Eason also could be a bit statuesque in the pocket, and he didn’t excel when throwing on the move. While testing numbers aren’t overly important for pocket passers, his 3-cone drill and short shuttle were considerably slower than even Tom Brady’s."

Here's the thing, Tom Brady showed that those numbers don't matter. The Patriots probably aren't going to worry about them unless they're in the sever red flag area. However, add to that his poor ability to sense and handle pressure and Alarms are sounding.

"The problem with the Patriots potentially taking Eason. There’s no guarantee he’s better than Stidham. Stidham also was a player who flashed elite traits in college" Said Kyed

Having to sit a year period makes Eason a wasted pick. There are going to be good quarterbacks in 2021. The Patriots currently have plenty of needs and any quarterback should be ready to go in 2020 to compete with Stidham and Hoyer. If Eason isn't ready to step in on year one and compete for the job, he's not only a wasted first round pick but a waste in general. It's possibly he still maybe worth a seventh round pick. Even Hurts can come in and compete and or be used in year one. Tom Brady changed the landscape for the Patriots at quarterback with his early departure.

I respect Doug Kyed but recommend reading Solak's scouting report on Eason from The Draft Network.

The Patriots have a guy going into his sophomore season who "flashed elite traits" in college according to Kyed, before sitting his rookie year behind the GOAT, and a career backup who can mentor young quarterbacks or come in and start as a scripted game manager. Eason would be asked to compete early and the loser of the competition holds the clipboard. That's modern day NFL football.

The question we have to ask ourselves as fans, while I am sure the Patriots have already answered this one, is do we want risk a pick on a guy being compared to Ryan Lindley, Brock Osweiler, or Ryan Mallett, in Hope's his comparison to Carson Palmer is more accurate?

Other potential Patriots quarterback draft prospects: Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Tyler Huntley, Justin Herbert, Bryce Perkins, Cole McDonald, Jake Luton, Josh Love, Jordan Love, and long shot Malcolm Perry.

Kiper Heard Patriots Like Jalen Hurts

In his article on April 18th, Doug Kyed of NESN released an Article titled "Patriots Draft rumors: Mel Kiper Has Heard Patriots Like QB Jalen Hurts".

Just from the title alone, would upset Patriots Fans who think the Team cannot win without a first round quarterback. Who discredit Brady, Wilson, Prescott, and other Starting non first-round talent as flukes, anomalies. For the rest of us, this is something to keep us optimistic.

There is good chance the Patriots could trade down to acquire the number 28, 29, or 30th overall pick. Those spots are just as good as a second round pick for drafting a quarterback, if the Patriots don't just leap from into the second round.

“There’s word out that they (the Patriots) like Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma,” Kiper said on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria.” “He could be used in packages, and they could do with him they did with Lamar Jackson his rookie year in Baltimore. …"

While Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels may get creative with Hurts, they are not going to change the offense that drastically into a Gimmic offense like the Ravens or the 08 Dolphins. Don't get your Hope's up for that. Even though I would love to see the Patriots breakout one of the old formations from the NFL's past that featured two quarterbacks.

"Hurts has “moved up as much as anybody” in the draft according to Kiper, "I’ve been told by someone I respect very much in the NFL right now. He’s a GM. He said the other day that he will not get out of Round 2. Hurts will not get out of Round 2.”

That's pretty inspiring if you're on the Hurts bandwagon. Hurts in my opinion is the best fit for the Patriots. He might not be a one year wonder, flash in the Pan like Joe Borrow, He might not even have the Talent of Tagovailoa but he's got grit, he's got intelligence, He's got work ethic, and most importantly he's got leadership qualities.

No matter if one loves or hate Hurts, No one cannot deny that he is a weapon that Belichick can find a way to use. Hurts clearly needs some development after transferring schools but like several quarterbacks over the past few drafts, everything is about location.

Some quarterbacks are designed for the Patriots like Mike White formerly of Dallas, Ryan Finley of Cincinnati, Josh Rosen of Miami, just to name a few. As anyone can see, not getting drafted by the proper team can be dire to a players career. Will Jalen Hurts be a Patriot like he was meant to be, we shall wait and see.

What are people saying about some of the best fits for the Patriots?

The NFL draft is days away and I thought I would take a look at my top 5 fits at quarterbacks for the New England Patriots and what people are saying in the media. You might agree and you may think I'm off my rocker but in the end, I hope you'll have a few more names on your Board.

I have Jalen Hurts the 6th best fit in the 2020 NFL draft. Hurts reminds me of Russell Wilson with how he can stand in the pocket or prolong a play with his legs. In 56 games Hurts Competed 65.1% of his passes for 9477 yards, 80 Touchdowns to 20 Interceptions with a QBR of 162.6. Hurts is a dual threat and also Carried the ball 614 times for 3274 yards and 43 Touchdowns.

"QB Jalen Hurts is a transfer from Alabama who has steadily progressed as a passer -- he still has limitations but the improvement he's shown over his last 3 seasons is notable, the arrow is pointing in the right direction. Hurts is a perfect Day 2 QB in today's NFL, where he can shine via on extended plays, mobility, play-making ability and comfort off script. Hurts' general accuracy may temper his overall ceiling but he's a developmental starter caliber player. " - Crabbs TDN

The 7th best fit for the Patriots Tua Tagovailoa is probably a better Quarterback then Hurts. Tagovailoa could step in and be a starter on day one. The big question with him is his fragility. I think of Sam Bradford's body breakdown when I think of Tua, A Franchise quarterback who is made of glass. Bradford's career was cut short due to injury and he never reached his full potential as a starter.

In 32 games Tagovailoa completed 69.3 of his passes for 7442 yards, 87 touchdowns to 11 Interceptions with an insane 199.4 QBR. Tua also produced 340 yards and 9 touchdowns on 107 carries.

"Tua Tagovailoa's only question falls onto his durability after suffering multiple ankle injuries and a dislocated hip. His exposure and mastery of 2018 vertical offense and 2019 WCO concepts in Alabama offense provide easy projection to the pros — he's an elite passer with rare intangibles, short area quickness and accuracy. Tagovailoa has never met a stage that was too big, either. This is a face of a franchise player who, if healthy, will be an elite quarterback soon before long. " - Crabbs TDN

The 50th overall best fit for the Patriots might just be three star quarterback Tyler Huntley of Utah. Huntley reminds me of an undeveloped Jarrett Stidham with better mobility. In 37 games Huntley Completed 67.2% of his passes for 7351 yards, 46 Touchdowns and 20 INTs with a QBR of 152.6. He also had 389 carries for 1189 yards and 16 Touchdowns.

"Tyler Huntley is a very raw prospect with the tools to develop into a decent starter at the next level. His athleticism immediately jumps off the tape, but he’s more than just a one-read scrambling quarterback. Unlike a lot of athletic quarterbacks, Huntley is perfectly comfortable keeping his eyes downfield, buying time behind the line of scrimmage, and delivering a strike down the field. Additionally, Huntley keeps his cool under pressure and rarely puts the ball in harms’ way. Overall, there is definitely enough in him to make you believe he could become a starting NFL quarterback.

However, there are quite a few hurdles standing between him and a starting job. For one, his mechanics leave a lot to be desired. Huntley’s subpar footwork and deliver lead to a loss of velocity which shows up on tight-window throws. He rarely attempts to thread the needle, so to speak, and that’s going to be an issue in the NFL. Because of his poor mechanics, he doesn’t have the downfield accuracy or arm strength required to succeed at the NFL level. The right coaching staff could fix these issues, but that’s much easier said than done. His raw talent makes him worthy of a draft pick, but he won’t be ready to start for another two or three years, if he ever is at all." - David Latham The Last Word.

The 51st best overall fit is another fan favorite, Justin Herbert. Herbert reminds me of Big Ben. When he's on, he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league, when he's off, he's not even good enough for a practice string. That's what I see with Big Ben and as I said Herbert reminds me of Ben. He's got a gun slingers mentality.

In 39 games Herbert completed 64% of his passes for 10541 yards, throwing 95 touchdowns to 23 Interceptions and finishing with a 153.1 QBR. He also had 560 yards and 13 Touchdowns on 230 carries, showing he can be a threat with his leg if given a lane.

"Justin Herbert has all of the physical tools to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL, particularly for a vertical passing offense. Herbert presents as a player with consistency issues on timing throws and troublesome lapses under pressure. Ball security is another issue, so Herbert will need to be aided by high level interior OL play to protect him from consistent duress. If everything clicks, he's a top tier talent. But the wrong situation could be nuclear. " - Crabbs TDN

Just behind Herbert is Byrce Perkins as the 52nd best fit in the 2020 NFL draft for the New England Patriots. Perkins is another Day 3 dual threat developmental quarterback. He has the parts to be a back up and possibly a starter. He just needs to be assembled.

In 27 Games Perkins completed 64.5% of his passes for 6210 yards. He threw 47 touchdowns and 21 Interceptions for a QBR of 139.7. Perkins had 1692 yards and 20 Touchdowns on 439 carries during his two seasons.

"With a lot of the physical tools Bryce Perkins has the traits that should give him a shot to be drafted with the idea of being developed. Having good athletic ability and short range accuracy will really benefit him going into the league. He may be best suited to play in an offense that has West Coast principals where he can take advantage of timing routes and quick strikes. Perkins is a fun player to watch and it’s hard not to root for him. I’ll be anxious to see how he develops over his senior year. At this stage it does look as if Perkins has a shot to be drafted and viewed as a career backup and someone who could come in an start a game or two if needed." - Brian Johannes NFL Draft Geek

“Perkins, another guy, could come in late,” Kiper Jr. said. “We’ve seen what Taysom Hill has done in New Orleans. I project Jalen Hurts as a fourth-round pick, as that type of quarterback that can fill a role and give defenses something else to look at. Perkins could maybe be that type of player as well, so possibility there for late rounds for him.” -Kiper Jr

Rounding out my Top Fits at Quarterback are

Cole McDonald Hawaii, Jake Luton Oregon State , Josh Love San Jose State, and another fan favorite whom I think will not make it out of the top 15, Jordan Love Utah State.

The draft is under two weeks to go and nobody knows what is at stake for the Patriots. Will the Patriots start Hoyer? Will they start Stidham? Between now and then will they sign or trade for a quarterback? We have no Idea what is going on inside the Patriots war room. It's fun to speculate but it is also causing a lot of anxiety. The draft cannot come soon enough.

Patriots' Harry Not Elite or No. 1

"NFL analyst doesn't believe N'Keal Harry will be elite or No. 1 receiver." At least that's the title of the latest article by Isaiah Houde of Patriots Wire.

Belichick too Harry uncharacteristically in the first round. The reason given to why Belichick took Harry at the time was that he could not find a trade partner as everyone thought he was trying to fleece the draft and that the Arizona Cardinals were taking Harry with the very next pick in the draft. How true this is, we don't know.

"N’Keal Harry from Arizona State had high expectations based on Belichick’s unprecedented draft choice — expectations he couldn’t live up to. Harry sustained an injury during the preseason that sidelined him for the first nine games, making it difficult to prove himself. He was tossed into a stagnant Patriots offense with a frustrated Tom Brady in the middle of the season and it was enough pressure to make any rookie fold." said Houde

Tom Brady does not like working with Rookie receivers. He does not like mentoring them. He does not like babying them. In a Tom Brady offense, you either come in and know what you're doing or don't bother stepping on the field. If you're a rookie, you better be a natural student of the game. It's no wonder why the Patriots have had so many receiver draft pick busts over the last twenty years.

Harry stats didn't look great but he showed promise versus the Chiefs and had his stats stolen by a blind ref. A certian Patriots Pod caster will tell you "this was part of the NFL rigging the Superbowl, so people could Kiss Patrick Mahomes' ring." I hope it's not true but with Roger the clown, we never know.

On WEEI's Dale & Keefe radio show, Jeremiah said “He went a little bit higher than I had him, but what I thought he could do was be a red-zone guy, he was a big target, a third-down option, It’s not normal to have rookies play well at that position. Last year was not a normal year. We had A.J. Brown, (D.K.) Metcalf and (Terry) McLaurin, all these guys, Deebo Samuel, have great rookie years. It is normal for these guys to take a little bit of time."

The Patriots normally go through rookie contract after rookie contract because their draft picks never seem to pick up the position on the NFL level. While there's hope for Harry's teammate Jakobi Meyers, the Last Patriots receiver to make an impact during their rookie campaign was retired Superbowl star Malcolm Mitchell.

While the jury is still out on Harry, I said durning last season that I thought Harry would be a fine number two, maybe number three but he needed a number one pass catcher to take pressure off of him. I completely see why Houde believes Harry will not be a number one in the NFL. While Harry should flashes that he was good, he never showed flashes that he could be great. He never showed a dominating presence on the field.

Houde finishes with "The Patriots depth chart currently would place Julian Edelman as the No. 1 receiver and likely put Harry right behind. New England has Edelman, Harry,  Mohamed Sanu, Damiere Byrd and Jakobi Meyers as guys who would likely make the roster.

Harry is going against unlikely odds right now with an uncertain quarterback situation, but 2020 will be a huge season to prove his worth in the NFL."

Patriots get Eluemunated.

"FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced that they have signed restricted free agent OL Jermaine Eluemunor. Terms of the contract were not announced." According to the staff at Patriots.com

"Eluemunor, 25, is a veteran of three NFL seasons with Baltimore (2017-18) and New England (2019). The 6-foot-4, 335-pounder was acquired by New England in a trade with Baltimore on Aug. 29, 2019. He originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick (159th overall) by Baltimore out of Texas A&M in the 2017 NFL Draft. Eluemunor has played in 27 regular-season games and one postseason contest with three starts, two at right guard in 2017 and one at left tackle in 2018. Last season with New England, he played in 10 games as a reserve, seeing most of his playing time on special teams."

The Patriots have an entire returning starting offensive line. The Patriots also have 2019 draft steals Tandy Cajuste and Hjalte Froholdt returning from injury. The Patriots are looking set to have a bounce back in 2020 after the line was decimated by injury and Marshall Newhouse.

The Biggest concern is who will be backing up David Andrews. Ted Karras is gone on to greener pay checks. And the team doesn't have a lock as to who replaces him. Eluemunor's signing should put him a directly behind Andrews going into the 2020 NFL draft.

Even with the Eluemunor signing, I expect the Patriots to target one center in the NFL draft. Eluemunor is young but the team needs to know they have the right guy ready at center. The signing however means the Patriots could push acquiring a center on to day three. The longer the Patriots go without drafting a center, the better things look for the former fifth round pick.

A Target for the Patriots in the NFL Draft.

This is the Sixth pick in the article six targets in the 2020 draft to renew the Dynasty by Michael Johnson of Fan side. (The article was written before the Brady quit on the Patriots.)

K.J. Hamler, WR, Penn State

"The Patriots aren’t a team who’ll pass on a player that could change their offense. One of the things missing in 2019 was speed..." "Bill Belichick has taken flyers on veteran speed receivers. Brandin Cooks helped their offense a great deal but he was shipped away for financial reasons."

"They brought in Phillip Dorsett via trade from the Indianapolis Colts but he hasn’t panned out..." "Penn State’s K. J. Hamler is the guy the Patriots need."

Dorsett is gone but it's clear Dorsett did not revive his career like Belichick had hoped. Dorsett has promise, just not enough for the Patriots system. Part of that has to Fall on former Patriot Tom Brady. As Far As Hamler, He is more than just a dump ball receiver. No matter who is the quarterback, They will be able to let the ball fly. Look for a lot of quick hits to Hamler.

"People will try to talk themselves out of loving Hamler because of size at 5-9, 176 pounds. However, he brings too much to the table. No, he’s not a true boundary receiver but, at the line of scrimmage, he’s difficult to touch. He gets off with elite quickness and hand speed. As a deep threat, he’s second to none thanks to his speed." said Johnson

Anyone worried about height need only look at 5'10" AB or our own Julian Edelman. Hamler is a straight baller and will do anything asked. If they want a Chris Hogan or Danny Amendola Clone, he can do it. If all they want is a return guy, he's got them. If they want a Randy Moss Clone, He'll try but tell them to put down the crack pipe.

Hamler is a weapon and more than a slot. His blocking will help in the run game, and he can stretch the field from the flanker spot as well. The Patriots run a version of spread offense and it's more likely he will be used as a slot but he can do so much more. Don't take my word for it. Look what one of the draft Network writers has to say.

"Pro Comparison: Brandon Cooks.  K.J. Hamler is a solid Day 2 candidate for teams looking for an electric playmaker to add to their receiver corps, and is of even higher value to spread-oriented offenses that want a starting slot through whom they can funnel much of their base/series offense. Hamler is at his best in the RPO game, where he can win against leverage against conflicted overhang defenders, then beat second- and third-level angles and turn simple, install box-counting plays into chunk gains. Hamler is further a candidate for an increased downfield presence, as he has the necessary long speed, second gear burst, and route-running to separate and beat safeties’ angles. Hamler should be protected from press coverage early in his career, and may just end up a solid slot in the NFL — but as a young player who is still growing into his frame and game, Hamler’s development is conditional on improved releases against press, which will allow him to win from the Z alignment and become a field-stretcher. Hamler is a high-floor player because of his return/space ability, but should become more at the NFL level." - Solak TDN

And that my fellow Patriots Nation family is why KJ Hamler should be a target for the six time superbowl champion New England Patriots.

Edelman Ain't Taking Nick Wrights' BS.

Julian Edelman fires back at Fox Sports host Nick Wright in a most savage tweet according to sports writer Nick Noll at Clutch Point.

"Host of Fox Sports’ First Thing’s First Nick Wright had a trade idea. According to Rob Bradford of WEEI Radio, Wright thought the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots might want to work out a deal. And star wide receiver Julian Edelman wasn’t a fan." Says Nick Noll

The ideal that Bill Belichick would get rid of his best and most reliable security blanket, a security blanket who had a great year is insane. What kinda drug did Nick Wright take before he opened his mouth?

Noll reports "Edelman tweeted, “Nice hairline bro.” However, that tweet has since been deleted."

Edelman has class, that's why he took down the tweet as a feud between himself and Wright is more of a Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Brown thing to do. Edelman knows that it would be unbecoming of a New England Patriot. Nick Wright is an idiot, who already fell off the Max Kellerman cliff for Journalism.

Edelman aka Minitron should've spent the year on the IR but instead showed incredible grit and toughness. He had an amazing 2019. He is an inspiration to the entire organization. Regardless if Tom Brady is gone, Edelman is still untouchable at this moment.

A Deal Between the Patriots and Buccs for OJ Howard?

The Patriots- Buccs trade for Howard could actually work according to the latest article by Steven Kubitza from 12up.

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used the No. 17 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft on tight end O.J. Howard. He was in a prolific passing offense with Jameis Winston in 2019 and proceeded to finish with only 459 receiving yards. That reportedly has Howard on the trading block one week before the start of the 2020 draft." According to Kubitza

There was talk the Patriots had interest in Howard during the 2019 season. It seems rather stranger that the Buccaneers would put Howard on the Trade Block, knowing Tom Brady loves tight ends.

While a few days ago, I thought no way the Buccaneers would accept the trade, before the Patriots offer a trade, I would offer a straight up Gronk for Howard. Then Maybe Gronk and a sixth for Howard. If Tampa turned it down, no way do I offer more than one third and a sixth for Howard.

Howard could help ease Ryan Izzo's development and would and should guarantee the Patriots have seen the last of career backup Matt Lacosse. It would also require the Patriots to draft one less tight end.

For those unfamiliar with Howard, take a look at his scouting report from Parker Hurley of the last word.

"At the end of the day, Howard’s biggest strength is how complete of a player he is, and his weaknesses are all nit-picky and in small areas that could propel him into elite tight end territory in the NFL. It is not often that you see a player with his size, receiving ability and athleticism at tight end. When you add in his years of blocking, and ability to use his speed and athleticism to pull and make precision blocks, and to hold blocks down field, it is hard to find a better tight end prospect in recent memory.

His ceiling is to be compared to the likes of Rob Gronkowski as the elite in the game. But thanks to his blocking ability, and his red zone prowess, he has a very low floor. This makes him a sure fire first round pick, and some team may fall in love and nab him in the top ten."

Steven Kubitza closes the article by saying "Having 12 picks allows the Patriots to be aggressive in trade talks. The Bucs would be wise to accept a third and a sixth in exchange for Howard if there is no intention on keeping him past his rookie deal."

Let's hope a deal gets done.

Return of Demaryius Thomas

Josh Alper reported "Demaryius Thomas looking for a place to Play."

"Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas‘ name hasn’t popped up in conjunction with any teams this offseason, but that’s not because Thomas has decided to call it a career.

Thomas was a guest on 104.3 The Fan on Wednesday and said, via Nicki Jhabvala of TheAthletic.com, that he wants to play an 11th NFL season. Thomas added that he feels good physically and that he wants to reach 10,000 career receiving yards."

The Patriots need help at wide receiver and while Thomas could help a young quarterback blossom. DT is trending in the wrong way age wise. However if the Patriots are thinking about Chris Hogan, why not consider a second run with DT?

"Thomas signed with the Patriots last offseason, but was traded to the Jets in early September..."

Thomas was upset with the trade. He waited to resign with the Patriots instead of looking for a new team because of Bill Belichick. When the Patriots acquired AB and Shipped Thomas out, he let his frustrations be known.

Thomas had this to say about the situation."It was insulting, for sure,” Thomas told the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta. “Once I got cut (on August 31), I could have just come here (to the Jets) and not stayed there and re-sign. When they re-signed me, I was thinking that I was good. Two weeks later, I was gone.

"So, it’s like, ‘Why did I waste my time?’ Because at the end of the day, it was kind of a waste of time for me." "They kicked me (to the curb) and shipped me out like I’m just a rookie,"  " ... It was disrespectful to me."

" ... You told me when you cut me at the (final) cut, sit around you’ll bring me back. And I stayed. I could have easily become a Jet once I got cut. … I could have been here the next day after I got released. But I chose to stay."

"Coach (Belichick) came up to me and was like, ‘Uh, we got too many guys. We can’t get the ball around enough and we’re going to trade you to the Jets,' " Thomas said. "And that was that."

Look, location is everything in football. Playing for the wrong team can destroy a players career. Good players are smart about where they sign. No way DT signs with Sam Darnold, the kid from the sixth sense.

There was a lot of hope when the Patriots signed Thomas to a one year six million dollar deal.

Scott Polacek wrote last year. "Thomas was one of the best receivers in the league during his tenure with the Broncos, making four Pro Bowls and winning a Super Bowl. He topped 1,000 receiving yards five seasons in a row from 2012 through 2016 and tallied double-digit touchdown catches three times in that span.

He consistently demonstrated the height at 6'3" to high-point passes in the end zone, the speed to beat defenders in press coverage and the agility to make tacklers miss in the open field.

However, the Georgia Tech product saw his 1,000-yard streak end in 2017 with 949 receiving yards, and he experienced a significant decline in production in 2018 with 59 catches for 677 yards and five touchdowns split between Denver and Houston."

DT went from projected comeback player the year to a wasted season on a team with a young quarterback and a coach that couldn't win on a division III college team. Could Bill mend the fence and get Thomas as a minimum? Thomas is just looking for a one and done to break 10,000 yards,

During his time with the Jets, "He played in 11 games and caught 36 passes for 433 yards and a touchdown.

That left him with 9,763 career receiving yards. The vast majority of those yards came in eight-plus seasons with the Broncos, who traded him to the Texans in October 2018. Thomas tore his Achilles that December, which contributed to Houston releasing him after the end of the regular season."

One would think Thomas is an upgrade at the Position but again, like with Chris Hogan, maybe it's time to move on and stop living in the past with guys who's stats have been in decline.

You know Vinatieri, well he could be the next Patriots kicker.

Patriots Legend "Adam Vinatieri's nephew could be in Patriots plans to fill void at kicker." According to Jeff Kerr of CBS sports.

"The New England Patriots have a void at kicker for the first time since drafting Stephen Gostkowski in 2006, but that isn't completely unchartered territory for the franchise. Bill Belichick parted ways with Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri, the Patriots' kicker for 10 seasons, prior to drafting Gostkowski in the fourth round of the 2006 draft -- and now the question is, could things come full circle?"

Tony Eason helped lead the Patriots to a superbowl let's draft his son. Randy Moss helped lead the Patriots to an undefeated season and a superbowl, let's draft his son. Adam Vinatieri kicked some superbowl winning field goals let's draft his nephew. That seems to be the mentality of Patriots Nation this draft year. I wonder if Marshall New house has a kid in the draft.

"With Gostkowski cut, there's a chance that he could be replaced by with a very familiar name. Chase Vinatieri, who is Adam Vinatieri's nephew, played at South Dakota State just like his uncle and is among the kicker prospects in this year's draft (though he's not among our top 10, which you can check out here). The Patriots have worked with Chase's kicking instructor Mike McCabe, who also worked with punter Ryan Allen during the pre-draft process. Allen was the Patriots punter from 2013 to 2018." Said Kerr.

The Patriots might have had an extra scout working at South Dakota State. One thing Belichick likes to do is cozy up to college coaches. He finds ways for it to benefit him. Prior to this week, nobody was talking the name Vinatieri in New England, now he's the best thing since sliced bread.

"From watching the draft the last few years, maybe one, two or three kickers get drafted, and so realistically, it's more likely I'll be an undrafted free agent," Chase Vinatieri said to ESPN. "I'm definitely OK if that's what it is. I'm just looking for a team to give me an opportunity."

Few Kickers get an opportunity, and too many teams hold on to bad kickers. Hopefully, the young buck gets a chance to prove himself. After watching him run, a team might try him at receiver. Belichick loves players that are versatile, just ask Minitron.

If Chase Vinatieri, a 50% accuracy kicker with a leg that can hit near 60 yards doesn't inspire anyone, Kerr adds. "Adam Vinatieri hit 81.9% of his kicks in his 10 seasons with the Patriots, including game-winning field goals in Super Bowl XXXVI and Super Bowl XXXVII. He's second on the Patriots' all-time scoring list with 1,158 points."

That's superbowl hero Adam Vinatieri, not sure how it applies to his nephew's college career or ability but okay. Thanks Jeff.

I have nothing against Chase but we see people ride off their last name in Sports all the time. That's an unreliable talent measurement. We all know stats don't tell everything, and I could not find a real scouting article on Chase.

However, I did find a decent scouting video. Which I'll share the link with. Trust your eyes, not the last name. "The Patriots signed  Adam Vinatieri as an undrafted free agent in 1996. Perhaps they take the same chance on Chase." The kid looks good, maybe the Patriots will roll the dice, if they cannot get Blankenship.

Here is the link to the scouting video on Chase Vinatieri from One On One Kicking. https://youtu.be/MPIVnzJImsA

The Patriots are in the Hunt for an Offensive lineman.

Danny Jaillett of Patriots Wire has report that the New England Patriots have met with one of the top offensive line prospects.

"The New England Patriots are looking to improve every area on offense, and that includes the line. They have held meetings with several top offensive line prospects. Offensive lineman Robert Hunt has met with the organization, according to Draft Wire.

Hunt was a four-year starter for the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. He played the left guard position for his first two seasons before making the jump to right tackle in 2018."

Tackle was a sore spot for the Patriots in 2019. Starting tackle Isaiah Wynn and rookie swing tackle Yodny Cajuste were both injured for much or all 2019. The Patriots had to make due with a second rate division 3 talent level, washed up has been Marshall Newhouse.

"Dane Brugler of The Athletic has him as the top guard in this year’s draft class. Hunt has allowed just two sacks and 11 total pressures over the last two seasons. He would certainly add depth to a New England line that is lacking bodies on the line at the moment..."

The Patriots are in need of Interior line help mainly at center. With Cajuste and Froholdt returning, the two draft steals of 2019 provide much security in depth for the team that was missing last year. With Andrews being the biggest question, the Patriots need a Prospect that can step in if need be at center. Could hunt be that guy?

"Teams will want to do their homework on Hunt, however. Both in his medicals to evaluate the groin injury he suffered at the end of 2019 and the background related to his 2017 arrest. The players arrested reportedly cooperated with the authorities and engaged in a pre-trial diversion program which resulted in charges being dropped. However, teams will want to make sure they are comfortable with his character." said reporter Chris Pflum

"Given the potential lack of depth at the interior offensive lineman position in the 2020 NFL Draft class, Hunt is a player that could be a late-riser in the process.

He’ll likely need to adjust to a new position at the next level, but Hunt has a legitimate shot at being a mid-round steal for the right team." - Dan Matney

Hunt is being scouted by many teams, including the superbowl champions. The Patriots would be wise to get into the hunt for Hunt. With the hype and praise around Hunt, even without the guru Scarnecchia, the Patriots should have Hunt adjust to the role of center. His experience at guard and tackle will provide extra depth and security. The Patriots youth movement would be set adding Hunt to a depth chart that has Cajuste and Froholdt, at least for the 2020 season.

WIDE RECEIVER A POSITION OF NEED FOR THE PATRIOTS

According to Ryan Spagnoli of Pats Palpit in the "2020 NFL draft: Wide receiver is a position of need for the Patriots, but when will the Patriots address it?"

The Patriots shocked the NFL world when Bill Belichick selected Harry. Before anyone could ask Bill about the select, he was already on to Joe Juan Williams. Then Bill shocked the world again just before the trade deadline of the 2019 season, selecting Mohamed Sanu from the Atlanta Falcons with the 23rd pick of the 2020 NFL draft.

"Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III and Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb are pipe dreams but let’s be real, none of them are falling in the Patriots’ lap at pick number 23. However, there is a great tier of receivers right behind this trio that New England could actually be in play for at different parts in the draft depending if the team does pick at 23 or opts to trade back for another pick later in the second or third round. Says Spagnoli.

If the Patriots can trade down their number 23 pick for a second and a third or fourth round pick, then it becomes more likely that Bill will select a receiver. Meyers and Gunner O were undrafted rookies. Edelman, Sanu, and Harry were banged up. Plus Nobody knows what the Patriots actually got when acquiring Sanu and Harry. The Only "Receivers" the Patriots know 100% what they have in are Edelman and Slater, and special teamer Slater, who unless it was all Tom Brady's fault (Chris Hogan Fans might think so) is not catching passes any time soon.

The Patriots need versatility as they need guys who can contribute on Special teams as well. Guys like KJ Hill (Ohio State), Joe Reed (Virginia) or Devin Duvernay (Texas). The Patriots don't need to go after top shelf liquor when middle and bottom shelf quality will get the job done.

The Patriots have more priority needs like tight end, linebacker and Interior defensive line. They cannot afford to waste a high value pick on a receiver unless one falls.

Spagnoli adds "However, within their current four top-100 picks, they are a little too spread out and back-loaded to truly find some immediate help at positions of need. The most ideal situation to get the most value at multiple positions early on would therefore be a trade-out of the first round."

I would say Trade down in the first round before trading out. Baltimore has the number 28 and the number 60 picks in the draft. That's almost like getting a second and a third for their first round pick but there are teams like the lions or Giants who would still wanna move up and pay for the number 28 spot. There are many of trade possibilities.

We saw last year with Harris, Cajuste, and Froholdt that if a player slides further down then expected, Belichick has no issues picking them up. I think there's a good chance that could happen with KJ Hamler whom was mentioned earlier.

"If the Patriots want to fully invest and build around projected starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham for the future, getting him as much help at both the wide receiver and tight end position is imperative to building a strong core for the future. The same, however, goes with addressing other positions all over the roster." Says Spagnoli.

With the departures, the current Patriots have holes. That must be addressed, otherwise the team might be a 6 and 10 team, no matter how much Belichick game plans.

There is Talent going all the way down into round seven. This is a deep receiving class. In his article Spagnoli cut off everyone after round four. Well it just goes to show how flawed the scouting process it. If we're eliminating rounds five through seven as far as draft Prospects go, While I hate bring this up because many Patriots fans don't recognize the 13-3 superbowl 53 victory versus the Rams. The Patriots don't make the greatest catch in superbowl history against the Falcons. It was a seventh round selection who caught the ball an Inch from the ground. Not a first, not a second, but a seventh round draft pick.

Hell, Russell Wilson doesn't throw an Interception to Butler, if we exclude players outside of the first four rounds because neither would've played. This draft is full of late round sleepers, especially at the receiver position.

Patriots Select Zach Baun

"Patriots select Linebacker Zach Braun in Mel Kiper's latest Mock Draft". Zach Who? "ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr put out his latest mock NFL draft and the New England Patriots end up with a Wisconsin linebacker to help solidify the Defense." According to Musket Fires very own Peter Panacy,

"While the New England Patriots could go one of a number of different directions with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, particularly on offense, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has them instead reinforcing an already good defense with the No. 23 overall selection."
"While the New England Patriots could go one of a number of different directions with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, particularly on offense, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has them instead reinforcing an already good defense with the No. 23 overall selection."

While Many think if the Patriots take a linebacker first in the 2020 NFL draft that it is going to be one Malik Harrison from thee Ohio State university, "Kiper released his latest mock just over a week ahead of the 2020 draft’s start on April 23, and the Pats end up grabbing one of the more heralded linebackers in this year’s class, Wisconsin’s Zack Baun."

"Here was Kiper’s rationale for the selection:"

It’s really tough to predict what Bill Belichick is going to do in a draft, but we know that he likes versatile front-seven pieces. That’s Baun, who broke out for the Badgers last season with 12.5 sacks and 19.5 total tackles for loss. The Patriots lost linebackers Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Elandon Roberts in free agency, so Baun fills a need. Since it appears New England is happy with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer at quarterback, I’ll stay away from that position.

"Kiper points out a few things most fans seem to already understand. First, head coach Bill Belichick is impossible to predict, especially when it comes to the NFL Draft. And it also appears as if New England won’t try grabbing a quarterback early to replace the now-Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Tom Brady."

"Instead, signs point to Jarrett Stidham getting the nod under center.

The Patriots boasted one of the league’s best defenses in 2019, and that figures to be the team’s primary strength heading into this year, too. But that same defense lost some key players, as Kiper pointed out, particularly Van Noy, who signed with the Miami Dolphins after a 6.5-sack campaign last season."

"Baun, meanwhile, was a pass-rushing force his senior season with the Badgers, and that unquestionably propelled him into first-round discussion. Although he wasn’t much of a factor in this department his three years prior."

So far this is the first red flag about Braun, why was he not a sack machine earlier in his career? Was he held back on the depth chart or was he a product of his team? These are things the Patriots scouting report will look at. Let's take a second and take deeper look at Baun.

"NFL COMP - Lorenzo Alexander. Zack Baun developed into an all-around defensive playmaking presence in 2019 for Wisconsin, racking up 75 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. He projects favorably to a 3-4 outside linebacker role at the next level where his versatility to rush the passer, drop in coverage and defend the run is optimized given his modest mass and length. With that said, I believe he can also play SAM linebacker in 4-3 base defenses and rush the passer off the edge on passing downs, making him a scheme-versatile prospect. It may take a year of seasoning for Baun to make an impact in all the ways he’s capable of contributing, but he should be a heavily-featured sub package option right away. " - Marino TDN

"Zack Baun will excel in a defensive system that capitalizes on his versatility and football IQ to place him in various roles in the defensive front seven. Baun has the quickness, burst and hand usage to win as a pressure player but early downs will serve him best working off the football to take advantage of his quick processor and short area quickness to step into gaps and fill versus the run. He can be a critical starter for a defense but needs to be moved around to play his best football." - Crabbs - TDN

"Zack brings hustle and effort to the LB position. He's a sufficient athlete overall and has redeeming value in his effort and football character. In the run game he's sufficient. He has some pop in his hands but can afford to learn to disengage more consistently. Does a good job pursuing the football as a chase player on the backside. In the passing game he is also sufficient. He's not a dynamic athlete on the edge, but has good get off. He has also shown some wiggle and bend on the edge. He has shown that he can play on his feet, demonstrating the ability to rush or drop from an up or down position. He has generated some production and been effective on all 3 downs. This players skill set suggests that he will be a 4 phase, core special teams player if necessary." - Harris TDN

"Pro Comparison: Tim Williams. Zack Baun is a Day 2 candidate for a team looking for a quick and explosive outside rusher who primary plays from a stand-up alignment. A leggy and thin rusher, Baun regularly wins off of his first step with great snap anticipation, stride length, and natural burst. After challenging tackle depth, Baun can work a two-way go with clever usage of his hands and feet to soften rush angles and flatten to the quarterback. Baun is a bit limited in his hips and can struggle to reduce his surface area up the arc, and increased mass will be necessary to survive as a three-down defender, but he's one of the most polished rushers in this class. Baun is a candidate to contribute in pass-rush situations in Year 1, with a high ceiling in Year 3 if he improves his mass and run defense." - Solak TDN

Belichick has had a history of reaching, especially with the second round, which currently the Patriots don't have a second round pick. There's even those in the sports world who believe Sony Michel and N'Keal Harry were reached and not first round talent. If Belichick reaches with Baun, it won't surprise anyone.

The draft process is not perfect, especially when it comes to the Combine and scouting. Of the thousands available, only around 300 get invited to the annual combine. While Bill may reach with players like Baun, he also sifts through the trash to find starters that went undrafted.

Now back to the article.

"Now there’s a little extra wrinkle in Baun’s prospective analysis for the NFL Draft. According to reports from around the league, Baun tested positive for a diluted urine sample at the NFL Scouting Combine. Baun explained the result was due to “drinking significant amounts of water before his weigh-in,” which can happen (I personally have administered such tests before, and it’s common). Yet prospects are cautioned about preparing for this outcome leading up to the test, so Baun missed something somewhere."

"But there’s a major difference how diluted samples are handled this year under the newly adopted collective bargaining agreement. Last season and before, such samples would have been considered failed tests. Yet that’s no longer the case under the new CBA."

"As such, it’s highly unlikely the sample results will hinder Baun’s draft stock, putting him squarely back in the discussion for a first-round pick."

"And at least according to Kiper, the Patriots won’t be shying away from interest in the 6-foot-3 linebacker."

The Patriots have had issues in the past with people with substance abuse issues. Most recently, Josh Gordon. While this red flag maybe water under the bridge for Kiper, this maybe an Impasse for the Patriots. The Patriots do their homework and one can be sure that the Patriots already know what He was trying to dilute from his system.

Count on Belichick to Make Draft Day Trades

"The New England Patriots are sure to make trades in the upcoming draft 2020 NFL Draft" says Michael Devito of Chowder and Champions.

"The NFL draft can be fun for New England Patriots fans and enthusiasts in general. I’m one. But if  it can also be a post-facto drag and a terrible disappointment. Why?

Your team doesn’t draft the guy(s) you wanted or thought they should have. Your team traded out of a spot where one of these guys was right there for the Taking. Or your team just didn’t have a clue of what they were doing or a plan to execute it if they did.

Welcome to the world of a Patriots draft fan! I have written that the Patriots only predictability is their unpredictability. Now, I’m going to completely contradict my own dictum and say this: one aspect of the New England Patriots every year is predictable."

Back in 2018, People wanted the Patriots to take Lamar Jackson in the first round. When the Patriots surprised everyone taking Sony Michel and Isaiah Wynn, Patriots fans were so upset that we had them posting drunk rants from St. Lucia. Not the the media noticed, they were too busy talking about middle aged men, falling off cliffs. Still some don't believe the Patriots will make a trade.

“Why that’s preposterous”, you say. “How can you now say anything about their draft will be predictable when you’ve asserted on more than one occasion that they are entirely unpredictable? You must be bonkers!” "Hmmm … that indeed may be true, but in any event, there is one thing that is absolutely predictable about the Patriots Draft and will be on April 23-25.

Enough suspense, this is it. That Patriots will trade up, down and all-around later this month in the annual NFL Draft."

Over the past few weeks, I have told people to expect Bill Belichick to go "Jimmy Johnson" crazy with trades in the draft. Doing several mocks where the Patriots end up with anywhere from fifteen to twenty five picks by the time Bill is done. While twenty five is a bit high, it's not out of the range of possibility.

"The New 2020 draft will definitely include Trades."

"That’s it, that’s my iron-clad, take it to the bank, can’t miss, lock, absolute guarantee (have I missed any good metaphors?). The Patriots will be trading. Now, this postulation wouldn’t exactly qualify as a bonafide revelation. Hardly. No rocket science here. They just do it."

I have had the Patriots trading the number 23rd pick to the Ravens for the 28th pick and for the 60th overall pick coming at the end of round two. And then trading the 28th pick to Detroit for the 35, 85th and the 21st pick of round seven. Bringing the Patriots up to 15 picks. Let's see what Michael has to say.

"Mock draft articles abound in trade speculation. Patspulpit.com‘s recent mock draft by Ryan Spagnoli is a case in point. Here’s what he postulates:

Patriots trade picks 1-23, 3-98 and 6-195 to Detroit for pick 2-35 and 3-67 and a 2021 fourth-round selection.
Patriots trade picks 6-204 and 6-212 to Jacksonville for pick 6-189.
Patriots trade picks 6-213 and 6-230 to Minnesota for pick 6-205.

This a very plausible suggestion by Ryan."

It's just my opinion but the Patriots would be given up more then they get back for the trades proposed by Ryan. For the Patriots to make these trades, I gotta think that they're not as high on some of the players in this years draft or are more concerned about their salary cap.

"Detroit is a popular possible trade destination since that franchise’s management (and coach) is populated by former New England Patriotspeople. Pundits have clearly speculated that the option for New England to trade down from their 23rd spot in the first round to pick up a second-round pick and a third maybe or whatever is certainly plausible.

A note about trade speculation that lands the Patriots in the second round. Ah … the Patriots haven’t really done very well with their second-round picks under Bill Belichick. Rather dismally, actually with one exception of singular note, Rob Gronkowski, and a few other good players. Other than that, not so much."

The second round is a taboo round for the Patriots but like all curses, you can't get over them if you don't face them.

"This article points out their record in the second round in the 20 years of Bill Belichick’s tenure in New England.

R.J. White of CBSsports.com puts out this scenario for a New England draft trade in a recent article:

For this mock draft, which will be my last before rolling out the seven-round monster next week, I’ve put together six trades that in a bubble I think could happen, including the Dolphins and Patriots moving up for quarterbacks, the 49ers and Seahawks trading out of the first round, and the Buccaneers and Ravens jumping up the board to take top talent at key positions of need.

In this draft, the Patriots move up seven spots to No. 16 in the first round to nab highly rated quarterback Justin Herbert from Oregon. R. J. White notes:

With teams like the Raiders, Jaguars and Saints possibly in the market for a QB, either at their own picks or via trade, the Patriots make a bold move to secure the last first-round talent at the position, giving up No. 23, 87 and 125.

So national pundits and local pundits think the same, the Patriots will trade."

If the Patriots are going to trade up, I seriously doubt it will be for Herbert. Jordan Love or Tua Tagovailoa are the only Quarterbacks that make sense for the Patriots make such a move. The Patriots would be best waiting for Herbert to fall to 23 unless they're completely in love with him. I still think Jalen hurts may be the best fit for the Patriots offense, even if he's not the most talented of the bunch.

"Personally, I’d rather see the Patriots hunker down for once, keep OUT of that dreaded second round and KEEP and USE all the picks they have. There’s an article with a Patriots’ draft that envisions just that scenario. The Patriots keep and use all their 12 picks.

Only thing is, that’s not going to happen. Get odds in Las Vegas if you can on that. It’s a sure thing. So that’s that, my theory of the New England Patriots unpredictability is out the window. That being said, have to go now, and drum another theory I can later debunk myself."

I hope Michael is wrong about the Patriots staying put at the number 23 spot. While I agree I would like the Patriots to keep the remaining eleven picks, I would like to see if the Patriots could find a way to turn the number 23 into a second round and three or four additional picks. Even if it means making a frenzy of trades downward. The second round of the 2020 NFL draft is going to be packed with talent and the Patriots have too many holes on both the starting roster and in the depth chart, to be trading away draft capital.

Ross Blacklock at 23, Chad Rueter Thinks Its Possible

Adam London of NESN wrote an article back in February titled Who NFL draft analyst has the Patriots selecting with the first round. The subject of the article might be the highest ranked of the best fits for team needs. Since the article is a few weeks old, I'll provide updates where needed and a little more detail.
Quick update for anyone living under a rock or in a coma for the past month, Tom Brady has walked away from the New England Patriots as his old age heard the call of senior living in Florida. While it is possible, it is unlikely the Patriots will draft a quarterback in the first round.
Danny Shelton is gone but Butler signed a one year deal worth some place in the ball park of $3.5 million. The Patriots still have a hole and Blacklock still makes since to be an option of the first player off the Board for the Patriots. Crabbs of the draft Network wrote
Joe Detullio of the Game Haus also wrote
And Chris Pflum of Big Blue View also got in on Blacklock.

With the resigning of Butler, the Patriots may have more pressing needs. However, Bill likes to get the best player available that's play style fits team needs. If Bill doesn't make a move at 23 and Blacklock is there, he has just as much a chance of coming off the Board as Justin Herbert or Jordan Love.
