Nick Coe Breakdown

The Patriots signed defensive lineman Nick Coe to an undrafted free agent contract. Brandon King, Johnathon Jones, Will Hastings, and Jarrett Stidham are also allformer Tigers. One might start to think Belichick likes Auburn almost as much as he likes Rutgers.

Nick Coe won several honors at Auburn, most notably, the All freshman team honors in 2017.

Gus Malzahn head coach at Auburn spoke about Coe with Patriots Nation member Mike Reiss.

"He can play inside. He can play outside. He can play off the ball. He's an athletic dude. Strong. He's probably as talented out of anybody that came out of this draft; he has to be up there. He had a few things this year that I really think he'll overcome and grow and all that. He could be one of those diamond-in-the-rough type of players."

Coe is a 6'5" 280 pound beast. I had Coe as my fifth best fit for edge rusher. Coe is kinda like Richard Seymour as he can play 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE depending on the scheme. I thought Coe would go between rounds three and five. Coe is a steal as an undrafted free agent.

Coe had Seven sacks in his second year but his season was cut short after injuring his right wrist that required surgery. Coe didn't do much in 2019 but that could've also been how the big man was used and the fact that he lost his spot due to injury.

Coe has room for development, especially with hand usage. He gets beat a little too much by offensive linemen who tend to put Coe on his back too much for some scouts.

While not the best, Coe can be schemed to drop back into coverage which will cause mismatches. Coe seems like a natural pass rusher, so don't expect to see him in coverage often. Coe can on occasion play outside linebacker but he's too slow for the position.

All and all, the Patriots lost Danny Shelton and are going to need help with the Interior of the defensive line. I can see Coe being used early in 4-3 schemes along side Butler to seal up the middle as a defensive tackle.

As he develops, he will make a solid 3-4 end. The Patriots will put Coe in the best possible position to secure a roster spot. Right now, his biggest obstacle is the covid-19 virus. Hopefully Coe and the rest of the undrafted rookies will get a chance to prove themselves.
