"The contract is one of the largest for any undrafted tight ends on the market." According to Adam Schefter
In 2019 the Patriots gave undrafted tight end Andrew Beck $115,000 in guaranteed money with high expectations but ended up releasing him before the start of the 2019 season.
Burt was not used as a pass catching target in college. In 14 games he had 23 catches for 307 yards and 2 touchdown. Burt missed the entire 2016 sophomore season with an ACL injury.
At 6'3" 260 LBS Burt is built more like a H-Back and will likely compete for the vacant fullback position.
The Patriots are dealing with the loss of Tom Brady and James Devlin, and are still trying to find replacements for Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.
"In addition to Burt, the Patriots have numerous options to catch passes and block at tight end — Matt LaCosse, Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene and Ryan Izzo are just a few. The team invested in Asiasi, whom they chose with their third-round choice Friday." Per Jesse Borek of Clutch Point.
The Patriots are looking to develop their tight ends and with Burt's contract, he will be given every chance to make the roster.
