McCourty doesn't like the proposed onside rule change.

The NFL is proposing a rule change to the onside kicks. This is something many fans including this writer have wanted addressed for near twenty five years.

Instead of a traditional onside kick, teams would be allowed to have a 4th and 15 from their twenty five yard line. The potential rule change still poses a lot of risks, however it also gives more opportunity for success.

One of the McCourty brothers is against it.  In the title of Maximo Gonzales' article he says its Jason but in the Article he says Devin gave this statement to  Mike Reiss of ESPN.

“If I’m a team and I’ve earned a right to be up, we’ve made the plays necessary to be winning in the fourth quarter or what it might be, I have a chance to go seal the game by just catching an onside kick vs. being out there for a fourth-and-15- from that standpoint, I don’t really understand it. We’re now basically rewarding you for being behind. That’s the only thing, for me, that is a negative of it. But at the same time, we’re in the entertainment business, and an onside kick vs. a fourth-and-15, is a lot more intriguing is a lot more intriguing. So we have no control over it. If they vote yes, well be out there preparing situationally hope to stop fourth-and-15s with the game on the line.”

Now the new rule doesn't state that a team has to be behind. A team dominating on offense or struggling on defense might want to use this as a way to deal a victory. How many times have we heard a team doesn't trust their defense as they go for it on fourth down?

While the rule does give better odds for teams to stay in games, it also has odds of putting a game out of reach.

According to Gonzales, some coaches are already warning of using the new rule with high powered offenses.

"Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has already indicated as much by providing a warning of his team’s potential with a player of Patrick Mahomes’ caliber under center."

Belichick is the master chess player. Really, only Tom Coughlin has truly forced Belichick to beat himself. So the McCourty brothers won't have anything to worry about with the new rule except padding their stats.

While attacking the victory formation still needs to be addressed, among many rules. In the Modern era it's time to allow options to the onside kick rule to keep fans entertained but not eliminated as the surprise kick is still always dangerous, just ask Sean Peyton who used it in the superbowl.
