Bill Belichick called Chip Kelly about UCLA draftee.

The thing about making friends with college coaches is when you're interested in a player on their team, you have an extra scout. It helps even more so when that coach happens to be a former NFL head coach.

So when Bill wanted a final confirmation on the tight end he was considering on day two, he called his good buddy Chip Kelly. You know the guy who beat Belichick when Kelly was coach of the eagles. "Wink Wink"

So what did the UCLA coach tell the emperor of Foxborough? Kelly told Belichick that he was getting a unicorn, a centaur, if he selected Asiasi.

“His athletic ability for his size, someone that big shouldn’t be that smooth an athlete, His versatility is what a lot of teams in the NFL coveted, and obviously Bill saw that himself. The one thing I knew in coaching that league is there aren’t a lot of guys out there, no matter what year it is, who are as big and athletic. The combination of Devin’s size and athletic ability, I knew it was going to make him unique, not just in this class but any class.”

Asiasi is two inches smaller than Gronk. He's closer to Ben Watson at 6'3" 260 pounds. He's also coming off his best year, now that Kelly figured out how to use him. Asiasi caught 4 touchdowns and 641 yards during the 2019 college season.

Those numbers will be a welcome asset to a team who's tight ends couldn't get anything going.  Asiasi joins a crowded tight end unit where a competition for the third spot on the depth chart is up for grabs. Asiasi should be tight end one, when all said and done.
