Justin Trombino wrote about a player who is in the Patriots hall of fame and shared why nobody wears the number.
"It’s because it has been retired in honor of one of the greatest players to ever play for the franchise and in the AFL: Gino Cappelletti."
Trombino wrote that Cappelletti was the first Patriots player to score a single point.
The former AFL MVP went to five pro bowls. That wasn't his only accomplishment as he was the AFL's leading scorer. Putting up a whopping 1,130 points. It took adam VinatIeri to break his scoring record in the mid 2000s.
Gino Kicked 176 of 333 field goals, with a career long of 53 yards. He made 96.9% of his extra points. He caught 292 passes for 4589 yards and 42 touchdowns at a time when passing wasn't a normal thing.
Gino wasnt done there, he rushed for 6 yards, threw for one touchdown, and had 4 interceptions as a defender. And he did it by playing in all 153 Patriots games, never missing a game.
After retiring, Gino went on to become the voice of the Patriots, calling almost 600 games and even six superbowls, according to Trombino.
When Cappelletti left the broadcast booth, he gave this message.
"Through five decades, my romance with football and my relationship with the Patriots organization have provided me with a lifetime of wonderful memories. I have had the privilege of sharing the broadcast of six Super Bowls, and amazingly, five in the past decade. The memory of the first Super Bowl victory will always be fresh in my mind. For me, it serves as a special reminder of how far this franchise has come, the challenges that were met, and the adversity we faced in those early years. But as they say in the huddle after a long, successful day’s work, it’s time to take a knee and celebrate the win.”
The NFL has been hating on the Patriots long before Tom Brady, long before the league disrespected the 1985 AFC champions; All the way back to 1960 and the AFL days. If you need proof, why is a member from the Golden age of Football who meant so much to the AFL, as one of it's best players; still not in the NFL hall of fame.
