For now Jarrett Stidham is the future of the franchise. Incase you need proof, check this out.
"People around the league can't help but think of some great Patriots conspiracy that they'll trade up for a quarterback," an AFC pro scout said. "First it was Baker [Mayfield], then it was Tua. Spoiler alert: They really like Stidham."
The Patriots ignored calls from agents or told theem they were set at quarterback during the early part of the off season prior to Brady leaving.
The Patriots had a large selection of quarterbacks to choose from prior to the draft. They chose Brian Hoyer, a lower tier quarterback that is known as a game manager and career backup.
The Patriots kept Thuney and allowed their linebackers to walk. The Patriots made sure their defense was basically the same as it was in 2019, while bringing in two tight ends in the third round and Stidham's receiver from Auburn as an undrafted free agent.
The Patriots said they were going to get a quarterback on day three and they did after the draft. So why didn't they draft a quarterback on day 3?
Scouts had Stidham better than most of the top 5 quarterbacks in the 2020 draft. Many NFL scouts and analysts from Mel Kiper to Matt Miller to those over at CBS Sports had Stidham as a first round quarterback prior to the start of the 2018 college season, Stidham had a bad 2018 and went in the fourth. So it made sense to stick with a guy ranked higher on their board then the players in the current draft.
The Patriots after the draft could've traded for Jakobi Brissett or Andy Dalton. They could've waited for Dalton's release. Instead they signed two additional undrafted quarterbacks.
When asked about Stidham, a Patriots staff member said "Go ahead and get excited about him."
Another pro personnel scout, "They really believe in him. The rumor was that Belichick, Caserio and Josh [McDaniels] think they can win with Stidham on a rookie contract."
The 2020 season is a prove it season for Stidham. If he fails, the team knows they'll be in position and have the cap room for a quarterback. If he succeeds and the Bar is low, the Patriots will build around him. Stidham needs win a minimum of 7 games or really impress, if they finish worse to be the future. He has a low floor for 2020. The job is his to lose.
