Gus Malzhan reveals why he expects Jarrett Stidham to succeed as Patriots' starter

Contrary to popular belief that the Patriots didn't sign an experienced quarterback, the Patriots signed veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer this offseason. The Patriots also did not have to select a quarterback in the draft as they already had a mid-round quarterback they spent a year developing. Stidham has even earned praise from teammates.

Devin McCourty said "To me, there were weeks where he was just on point. And those were some of our best weeks as a defense, mainly because Stiddy ate us up in practice leading up to the game, and I think put more pressure on us. So I really admire just how hard he works, and then I've got to know him off the field as well. He's a really good guy. Young guy, but very mature. He's married. I think the Stidhams are going to be in New England for a long time."

Retired 2019 tight end Ben Watson also has chimed in, "Stidham has all that there needs to be for somebody who’s going to be successful, He’s a student of the game. You hear that a lot, but what that really means is that when we’re in the meeting rooms, he’s paying attention. When they’re in the quarterback room, he’s paying attention. When he’s on the field, he’s taking instruction from the coaches. He’s able to disseminate information to the guys in the huddle. He’s able to encourage them and kind of go through the minor details about route-running, about reading coverages, all those things. He’s eager to learn and he has a certain humility about him, with confidence. He had a chance to learn under arguably the greatest quarterback to play the game. He soaked that in for a year. Patriots fans shouldn’t be confident that he wouldn’t be in that room if Coach (Bill) Belichick didn’t think he could help the team.”

However, even with praise of the guys who've seen Tom Brady prepare for a good portion of their career, who've practiced with both Brady and Stidham, people still want to trash Stidham. The dump Stidham and tank for Trevor movement is real.

Stidham's former coach decided to speak up and Clutch Point's Marty Fenn believes this is why Guz Malzhan believes "Stidham will succeed as the Patriots starter."

“It definitely helped him to learn under the best and see what that looks like, but he’s the kind of young man, too, this is what he’s been waiting on. I’ll tell you, the moment won’t be too big for him. He’ll be up to the challenge, that’s what I expect, Even when he got here, before he played his first game, you could just kind of tell he was a mature young man. Like a gym rat, always at the complex trying to learn, study film. When he got drafted by the Patriots [in 2019], I thought it was a perfect spot for him system-wise — spreading the field. He’s so good with protections, changing protections, and scheme-wise everything that goes with it, and just the flexibility the scheme gives him. I think that really applies to his strength.”

One thing every professional sports fan knows is that a college career doesn't translate into what to expect once they start getting paid. Stidham has yet to start a real game, or take a meaningful snap in his pro career.

Until the 2020 season is completed, everything is just opinion, speculation and worth as much as a glass of water at the bottom of the ocean. However, talking heads have nothing to talk about but the Patriots' quarterback because the rest of the sports world is just that sorry.
