When asked about signing a veteran quarterback on the NFL network, Belichick said “You never know what is going to happen down the road, but we feel like we have four good players there,” the coach replied. “We added Brian and J’Mar to Hoyer and Stidham. We added Hoyer and had Stidham from last year. We like working with those guys, and we’ll see how it goes.”
Stidham is the clear front runner to start, while Hoyer and the two undrafted rookies will be battling for the backup role heading into the upcoming season.
Stidham has a lot of good things going for him. His draft status and his situation in college, as well as last season have been well documented. However, there is one quarterback to keep an eye on, forner Patriot Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett for the moment appears to have lost his starting job to Phillip Rivers. Brissett knows the Patriots system and is 12-20 as a starter. In 2019 he finished with a 7-8 record for the mediocre colts.
Brissett has played four seasons and still has plenty years ahead of him. He is the most likely veteran for the Patriots to acquire and Belichick is a never say never type of coach. By Belichick not giving a direct answer, he doesn't hinder any chance of getting his quarterback if the need arises.
Chris Guest Clutch Point also made a good point. "While you can never truly know what the Patriots franchise is going to do, it wouldn’t be surprising for the team to test a deep draft pick at the QB position – look how well it worked out for them with the 199 overall pick in 2000: Tom Brady."
What this means for the Patriots is that the only thing certain is that nothing is certain.
