Cam Newton most recently was expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks whom just resigned glass jaw quarterback, former New York Jet Gino Smith.
Recently a former assistant coach who still has ties to the Patriots opened up on the subject on a recent WEEI show this past Thursday, saying Belichick is a discount shopper when it comes to free agents. He likes to buy used or damaged goods and refurbish them.
Mike Lombardi told Ordway, Merloni and Fauria “I think if there has been one player hurt by the coronavirus in terms of being able to get in front of people — to be able to take a comprehensive physical not only on his shoulder, but on his foot to really understand where he is medically — it’s been Cam Newton. If you just understand Coach Belichick … he loves to play the market like Warren Buffett does, ‘I am going to buy low and sell high.’ This is a blue-chip, MVP player who is out there at a position that there is a degree of uncertainty.
You’re talking about a team that has always, always, and this has been Belichick’s mantra forever, is always looking for ways to improve the team, not necessarily on draft day, but 365 days a year. Until they can get a medical, until they can get an understanding of where he is, I don’t think you can rule him out.”
The Patriots will need to make some moves to free up some cap space. Whether it's moving players or working contracts, the Patriots would need to do something to sign another quarterback. Don't forget, the Patriots still have until June to get something done with Joe Thuney if they plan on keeping him.
Stidham and Hoyer seemed poised for an exciting battle for the starting spot, with Stidham having the early edge. That doesn't Mean Jacoby Brissett, RGIII, or Cam Newton cannot still find a way on to the roster and into that competition. Right now Belichick appears to be dragging his feet but remember the NFL is a race, not a sprint and Bill's been doing this a long time.
