In Michel's absence 2019 third round pick Damien Harris and undrafted free agent JJ Taylor have put on a show, with Harris's name being talked about as the possible number one.
Sony Michel was removed from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday. One must thing he was feeling pressured and pushing for this. Several writers have said Michel looked really good, 2018 good. One writer saying "He looked explosive and smooth in his cuts."
Ian Rapoport said this morning, "I was told this is a relatively minor procedure and the fact that he's out there with plenty of time to get ready for the season is a very good sign for New England's starting quarterback."
With Damien Harris doing so well and Lamar Miller now on the roster, Michel must pick up the passing game. Having two backs proven in that area, that can steal his job is not a thing he can take lightly.
Michel has moved into 21st on the Patriots all time rushing leaders, dispite all the injuries, offensive penalties, and Marshall Newhouse making it impossible to run to the left side of the field in 2019.
Sam Marsdale of CBS Sports wrote, "Last season, Michel rushed for 70 or more yards in eight games. He found momentum down the stretch with 259 rushing yards in the final three games of the season."
Over the offseason, there has been a lot of talk that Michel cannot shred tackles. Everyone knows that the entire offensive line play with exception to Joe thuney, was down. Even the tight ends weren't blocking well. But nobody mentions that Michel had such a good stretch of games.
Belichick praised Michel's ability and development and said he just doesn't focus on one game or one play. That it's a case to case basis.
Bill also said, “We’ve talked to him a lot about what his keys are, what his reads are, what the progression of the reads are. You don’t just look at one guy after you get past that guy. After you deal with that particular block or that particular defender, you’ve got somebody else to deal with. We’ve talked a lot about that, and I think he’s improved a lot.”
Now that Michel is off the pup, business is about to pick up. Expect to see him going balls to the walls to put the spotlight on him as Harris and Taylor have given reason for Sony to be on the field less. The Patriots have less than three weeks before they kick off against Miami.
