Surprising to many, Miller is only 26 years old. So he is still in his prime. Now in 2018, Miller had a good year for the Texans but after an ACL injury, they decided to cut him.
First, Miller is an Insurance policy. Sony Michel is not due back to camp until week one. The Patriots need a reliable back heading into the season. James White is too valuable in his role to be the everydown feature back. If Rex Burkhead wasn't injury prone, maybe the Patriots don't make this signing.
Lamar Miller is 5'10" 225 pounds. He can block almost as good as a fullback on passing downs. Being 225 pounds, Miller gives the Patriots a power back. When Michel returns healthy, he can resume the finesse back role. Miller and Harris should assume a committee role for power carries. Miller may even take snaps away from James White.
As for Rex Burkhead and JJ Taylor this is a competition for a roster spot. Taylor may end up on the practice squad but Burkhead could see himself on free agency. Going through scouting reports on Miller pretty draft, people thought Miller could have a career early on as a return man. If Miller has those skills, he could beat out Taylor for Bolden's role.
So basically Miller could see the lead role until Michel is healthy and then switch to a committee role, taking carries away from the other backs. With his skills and value, he increases the competition for the position and means nobody can afford to take a day off, not even the former first round draft pick.
