In 2016 Steven was promoted to safeties coach and had them a top 5 unit. In 2019, He took over as secondaries coach and turned the defensive backfield into the most elite group in the NFL.
He also split playcalling duties with former Patriots middle linebacker and middle linebacker Coach Jarod Mayo. Together, the two created one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history.
In the spring I wrote an article about how Steven had earned his stripes to take over the Defensive Coordinator Job and that if he continues to improve, he could be in line to replace his father.
I also talked about how people were saying it's nepotism for Steven Belichick to get promoted in the system. How he should go elsewhere and start from the bottom and earn his stripes.
Year after year fans see coaches leave to take positions on other teams. Some have success and some not so much. Belichick is constantly having to replace staff members. This year he promoted his son Brian Belichick to safeties coach and moved Steven to outside linebacker's coach.
Why, because every team wants to not only hurt the Patriots but to be the Patriots. They want the success that Belichick has brought and hope that one of his coaches figured out Belichick's secret to success. So they constantly lure away coaches from the Patriots for promotions and money. Don't think the players are the only ones who leave New England to get paid, the coaches do it too.
USA Today's Doug Farrar talked a little about Steven Belichick and why he was moved. "Moving to coach the outside linebackers in 2020 is an example of what Bill Belichick has always asked his assistants to do — get as much experience as possible at as many positions as possible so you’re not overwhelmed when you get a head coaching opportunity. Perhaps the younger Belichick is the one to buck the trend of Patriots assistant failure."
Now while some Patriots fans want him to go, call it nepotism or say he'll be living in his father's shadow, Everyone knows after 3 or 4 years after replacing a coach, everything falls on to the current coach as it is their team at that point. Steven Belichick is now on the list of Head Coaching candidates, which should remain there if he continues to have success.
Let me say that again, teams are considering Steven Belichick for a head coaching job. To everyone who doesn't think he's earned his way, if other organizations felt that way; they wouldn't want him as their head coach. Think about that, the Patriots currently have two potential head coaches on the staff.
We all saw what Josh McDaniels can do in Denver. McDaniels has been entertaining coaching jobs. He almost took the Indy job, an analytics department kept him from accepting the job in Cleveland. Another offer is going to come his way and he could accept it and it could come after Steven leaves.
Ask yourself this, would you really see a person qualified for the position leave, when the frontrunner for to replace Belichick has repeatedly considered leaving and has left once before?
It doesn't make sense for the Patriots not to do everything they can to keep him around and as fans, we should want him around as an insurance policy until Bill steps down and his replacement is named.
