Todd Davis could be an underpaid addition to the Patriots linebacking unit.

There's a handful of big names the Patriots could bring in to help. Names like safety Sidney Jones, receiver Laquon Treadwell, safety Sean Davis, receiver Hakeem Butler, or safety Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Former UDFA, linebacker Todd Davis, could be just as big a help on defense. He's only 28, so he could be a long term piece.

Davis is a 6'1" 230 pound linebacker who can play anywhere. He has had four straight solid seasons, and is coming off back to back 100 plus tackle seasons.

His three come and short shuttle are in the range Patriots like for their slot receivers, meaning he can change direction with ease during pursuit. He's said to have good field awareness and is dangerous in zone coverage.

Here's some of what the mile high report liked about Davis.

"Good at point of attack. Diagnostic skills. Good at stacking, then shedding blocks. Solid pursuit. Good outside zone defender. Solid ability to change of direction. Solid ball skills."

The Patriots lost arguably the best linebacking unit in football after the 2019 season ended so they have a large hole filled with question marks.

Here's what the mile high report didn't like going into last season.

"4.87 40 shows up on the field. 1.68 10-yard-split. Missed two games with high ankle sprain in 2017. Short arms (31 1/4”) hurt his ability to separate from better blockers."

These are all issues the Patriots coaching staff can scheme around. So not areas that would cause for concern. He's been in the league since 2014, so his experience should also help make up for any flaws he has. Davis is recovering from a calf injury but should be ready to practice as soon as signed.
