Dianna Russini of ESPN tweeted on July first, "I spoke over text w/ an AFC East Head Coach on Cam Newton and the Patriots. “I think they are going to keep 3 QBs. Use Cam Newton perhaps as the wild card. I actually don't see him starting Week 1 in the offense...I know one thing for a fact: the #Patriots love Jarrett Stidham"
First off, as much as Russini's source may want to talk, they don't know nothing. The only Head Coach in the AFC east who might know anything about what Belichick is thinking is Flores. Which normally, I wouldn't think he would say anything but that would help him if there's a chance that it could cause friction between Stidham and Newton.
Nobody knows who the comment "I'm at your neck" was directed at. It very well could've been at the other quarterbacks on the roster. Since we cannot get in Cam's head we don't know what he was thinking when he made that statement. Anyways...
Shane Mickle of Clutch Points noted that there are a lot of questions about what's gonna happen with the Patriots quarterbacks, now the Newton has signed.
Mickle also wrote, "Before the Patriots decided to sign Newton, they seemed to be all in with Stidham starting, so it makes sense the team still has confidence in the second-year quarterback."
The one thing to keep in mind is it was reported that Belichick wanted a second year to develop Stidham before Brady threw a wrench in Belichick's plans.
Redskins Head Coach Ron Rivera said about Newton on the McNeil & Parkins Show, “He’s headed in the right direction. I mean, he’s probably about as healthy as it gets from what I’ve seen on video. I think he’s ready to bust out.“I would never bet against the young man, that’s for sure.”
Rivera was Newton's head coach in Carolina for those wondering what he has to do with the price of a cup of tea in china. Many thought Newton and Rivera were joined at the hip. Kinda like Buddy Ryan and Jim McMahon were back in the eighties.
If the Patriots start anyone but Newton, Patriots fans are gonna riot. There's already talk among fans on Twitter that if he doesn't get the job handed to him or if he gets beat out by any means, that it's because of racism. Since some of those fans mention "any of the other quarterbacks", We can assume they'll say it if J'Mar Smith turns into gold and Starts.
I am sure there are some fans that are racist but I do not believe Belichick is racist and Robert Kraft just wants to win because it means money in his pockets. So if Cam shows he's got it, he'll start.
Other fans have no confidence in Hoyer, who like Stidham at Auburn in 2018 and Newton's career in Carolina; has only played for dumpster fires but looked good from 2013 to 2015. Hoyer, like Newton has never been in this situation.
Then there's fans who don't want Stidham to be the starter because he has no personality. Apparently they didn't notice Brady was one of the most bland quarterbacks there was and when he tried to show personality, it was weird and awkward. Brady could get angry and throw fits on the field but other than that, Tom was as plain as white bread but like Tom told Edelman, he'll "always be your number #1."
I will say it's funny fans base Stidham's career off of a pick six and say he's done, he's a bust but Brady's farewell was also a pick six. That's how much their personalities are alike but enough of Brady Tampa bay's favorite son, who's finally having fun playing football.
The battle between Hoyer and Stidham, was about how well Hoyer played and which Hoyer showed up. The same is true about Newton. If Newton is still injured or that what happened in Carolina wasn't just a product of circumstance, we could see a serious battle.
While we could see Stidham and Newton used the way the Ravens used Jackson and RG3 or even run a little wild cat. Mickle writes, "If the Patriots do start Stidham to start the season, Newton is still a good signing. If he is struggling a few weeks in, the Patriots could bring in Newton to try and save the season."
I have the Patriots going three and two to start the season. However, I previously stated that pretty much what Mickle said. The bye week is the perfect time to make a quarterback switch.
We must put away our homer side and be serious as fans for a second. All five quarterbacks have a downside. With only two preason games only three have a chance to start, The question we must realistically ask ourselves is, who starts week one? Like it or not, there is a real case for and against each of them.
