Newton can run, 500 yards is something Newton could do easily in a season. Brady struggled over his twenty years in New England to get 1000 yards. Newton will break that in two to three seasons, if he sticks around.
It's been said that the Patriots run a short passing attack and that's not Newton's game. That maybe true of Newton during his time in Carolina but then again, it's probably why Newton has only completed over 60% of his passes three of his eight seasons.
The Patriots also attack all three levels of the field. As brady aged, he couldn't hit the deeper passes on a consistent bases.
Patriots fans have confidence in Brady's former backups. One more than the other but both can run the Patriots offense, to what extent is the question. Newton is trying to learn the playbook on the fly with being signed so late in the offseason and how complex the playbook is, he's gotta lot work ahead of him.
This has lead some to believe Cam might not start, and that he could be the number two or even number three going into the season. As long as the best guy is on the field, it doesn't matter to many but for some it's Cam or bust. Nothing in Foxboro is given, Cam will still have to earn his job, regardless of talent.
Chris Rosvoglou of the spun wrote, "New England runs a pretty complex system on offense, so Newton will have to adjust to Josh McDaniels’ scheme. Last night, he shared a photo of himself learning the playbook with the caption 'This s–t calculus.' ".
Obviously, Josh McDaniels had been working on opening the playbook for a more mobile Stidham, prior to Newton signing. The playbook will also be opened more as the season goes on for Newton if he beats out Stidham.
Because Belichick is trying to win and because it takes non quarterbacks about two years to learn a playbook and three normally for a quarterback, the Patriots aren't gonna want to teach 25 guys a whole New playbook.
The Patriots playbook will be between 66%-75% of Brady's offense with the rest being altered for the mobile quarterbacks. This will mean that the rest the roster will have less plays to learn as Cam learns the offense.
People have compared Newton's stats in 2018 to Brady's in 2019. If Newton really is about the same as Brady as far as a passer goes at this age of Brady's career, Cam should be able to run Brady's playbook without any issues. So there shouldn't be any problem with it being largely designed for a pocket quarterback.
The Patriots will use Cam Newton to the best of his abilities but they will also do their best to improve him. The Patriots run the "Air West Spread" offense. A Combine of the air raid, west coast, and spread. Two of these three offensive systems work best with a mobile quarterback, which is why the Patriots drafted Jimmy G., Jacoby Brissett, and Jarrett Stidham behind Brady. Newton will fit right in.
The plays are there, they always were. Brady couldn't execute them, so we didn't see them. It's why the Patriots were 29th in calling RPOs. The offense really doesn't need to be redesigned for Newton, it just needs to be opened up. Newton might be able to learn the playbook in time but will he own it. That remains to be seen.
