The 49ers Aren't Looking For A Ready Now Quarterback, How does that effect the Patriots

The 49ers want a first round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo. That's extremely unrealistic. At most unless they get a third in 2021, they could hope to get a conditional second in 2022 but a first is out of the question and they know it. So what does this mean?

This means that although Mac Jones should be there for them, the should be looking for a quarterback that's not ready now. That needs to sit for a year. Unless someone messes up, that's either Justin Fields or Trey Lance because I don't think they have the balls or stupidity to grab Kyle Trask, that high in the draft.

What that means for the Patriots is that unless something drastic happens, Cam Newton should be the starter in week one. It also means that Stidham will probably play the Hoyer role in 2021, while they develop a quarterback for a competition in 2022.

Here's the thing, everyone wants the Patriots to draft a quarterback but everyone can agree that we don't want them to take a quarterback for the sake of it. There's a very good chance that the Patriots don't take a quarterback now, or at least before day three.

The Patriots kept part of the Brady playbook last season for Cam, they just modified  the offense for what they believed Newton does best. There's no reason to think that they don't want a guy who can execute the Brady offense in 2021. So what if their guy is gone by pick five, or even seven?

Do they take a guy who doesn't schematicly fit what they wanna do or not? Sadly, 2020 proved that not every quarterback can dink and dunk. I watched enough tape reviews from different people and I watched the games in 2020.

Newton cannot dink and dunk, and don't give me the BS about the below average weapons not getting open. While they weren't getting open like elite pass catchers, they were getting open. The starting quarterback that was a backup level passer couldn't get them the ball. For whatever reason you want to give Newton to make it not his fault. That's another discussion for a different day.

The Patriots went out and got better weapons, so of course I expect Newton to have better production but I don't expect it to be drastic. I expect his ceiling to be ranked 18th at best in passing statistics. He's a running back first and running backs legs fall of starting at age 30. Isn't Cam 31 going on 32?

Back to the draft. If the Patriots draft a day three quarterback, they will be competing with Stidham for the job in 2022 at the very least; even if they're mobile. So who are the dink and dunkers of this draft class? If you want a running quarterback, look for one but if they cannot execute the Brady "Air West Spread" passing game, don't expect them to work.

The Patriots could get one of the few quarterbacks who returned to college this year, in the 2022 draft. Quarterbacks like Dustin Crum. Crum is a guy who would've been a day three developmental guy this year but has the tools to develop into a late day one, early day two guy if he puts in the work. However, that's next year.

Again, if the guy's not there, this year, do they draft a quarterback just because or do they pass and maybe take a day three development guy if they take a guy at all?

The defense is on the verge of being elite and the offense dosen't need much outside a quarterback but even if they continue to improve the rest of the offense with this draft without taking a quarterback. It will be hard for a quarterback not to have some success in 2022, regardless if they're on the roster now, or added in 2022.

Kraft's comments made it clear that Newton's not the guy in 2022 and with the 49ers asking price for Garoppolo, he's not likely to be the guy either. The 49ers asking price means the Patriots should have a much younger quarterback at the helmet in 2022.
