There are people who use Josh Rosen as the most recent case of a quarterback being played too soon and having their confidence shot before their career could take off.
Tonight I asked friends how Cam's first half vs the Raiders compared to Stidham versus KC. I was told, "it wasn't a fair comparison because Stidham had no practice time." However, that's partially why I asked. See there's a method to my thinking.
In the first half vs The Raiders, the Patriots went 2 punts, 1 INT, 2 FGs, 1 TD, and a kneel in seven drives. Stidham's four drives had 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 downs. One of Stidham's interceptions was a dropped and deflected competition.
Newton went 10-19 for 90 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 sk. 3 rushes 5 yards.
Stidham went 5-13 for 60 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs,2 rushes 3 yards. Stidham was on pace to go 8-19 for 96 yards. Again, his throw to Edelman was a good decision and throw. The score was 19-10 before Edelman surrendered a pick 6.
The KC game went from being in reach to basically out of reach unless the Patriots made something happen after that pick six.
Take away Edelman's INT and that's not bad statistically for a guy who had zero practice time and it's not far off of Newton's stats but since stats don't tell everything, need an eye test on this one.
Stidham looked good until Edelman dropped the ball into a defenders hands. After that he started looking like Cam Newton from the first half of the week three matchup versus the Raiders.
After the pick six, was being down 26-10, too much pressure to make the comeback versus the defending champions. With exception to the Chargers game, Stidham never looked right. Every flaw and complaint that was made for Cam Newton, was also made for Stidham. Stidham would receive only garbage reps in practice at best for the 2020 season.
Bill Belichick does his best to protect his players confidence and to put them in situations to succeed. Over the last three games of the season, Belichick played Stidham versus the Bills but never let him start.
There were rumors throughout the season that Stidham wasn't showing the ambition to take the starting job. Although Cam Newton said in December that he was impressed with Stidham's development. Question is, does Stidham still have the mental make up to go with his physical gifts or did that first pressure situation break him?
