In a recent article Justin Trombino of Musket Fire wrote "To better explain the importance of the safety position in New England, the Patriots used their top trio of safeties — Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, and Duron Harmon — at the same time in Super Bowl LII for 63 of 75 defensive snaps."
As we all know, Harmon was shipped off this offseason and is no longer a member of the New England Patriots secondary
The Patriots are preparing for the future. In 2019 they drafted JoeJaun William's who is working on learning the safety position this offseason. I wrote an article where I talked about this. William's is too slow to play corner.
In the 2020 draft, the Patriots selected another safety in Kyle Dugger. Dugger is capable of playing linebacker which helps the Patriots who just lost Van Noy and Collins.
Neither Dugger nor Williams need to have a huge impact in 2020. They just need to do their job when on the field. Not to mention the Patriots have one of the most crowded secondaries and should be running a 3-2-6 Dollar Defense.
There is hope for the Patriots defense as Trumbino wrote "Adrian Phillips is extremely versatile, has plenty of experience floating around as the hybrid safety-linebacker, and is going to fill the void of Harmon as the third safety on the depth chart. His two-year contract will keep him in New England through his prime years until 2022, and gives the Pats some positive hope for the near future of their safety position."
The nickel formation has become the current base defense in the NFL for many teams. The secondary is one area Belichick. Doesn't have to worry much about. It seems like every year, the Patriots are selecting a defensive back in the second round. Belichick will have the Patriots ready for when his veterans move on.
