While Patriots fans are already starting the stairway to seven chants, DJ Bean NBC Sports suggests fans put the breaks on for a second. With every player signing there are pros and cons.
Bean wrote, "Think about it. The Patriots are right there on the list of teams Newton should want to prove wrong. They didn't offer him a contract until he was available for the minimum. So say he goes off and earns a big payday: Why would he give any sort of discount to a team that only wanted him "minimum plus incentives" much?"
Bean asks if the Patriots will pay Newton big money, if he has a comeback year. The Patriots have avoided paying players top dollar. Hightower, McCourty, Gilmore, even Brady at one point. Bill never really pays elite money.
So let's say Newton does do play well. Are the Patriots going to spend Majority of their hundred Million on Cam in 2021? The Patriots will have a boatload of players to resign. Odds are They'll do just what Bean suggests and realistic fans are thinking.
Bean wrote, "Jarrett Stidham will be that for the next three seasons. If Stidham isn't the guy, they'll draft another guy and he'll be that dirt-cheap, groomable asset."
If the college season falls through then a lot of college quarterbacks could go later than expected. Any team who finds themselves in need of a quarterback in 2021, may just have a smorgasbord to choose from.
Most will agree with Bean that Newton was a good signing, especially the new bandwagon fans. Bean is also right that covid will change the conventional roster build planning. Bean also says he doesn't get why everyone is crowning Newton the franchise before he does one thing in a Patriots uniform.
Bean says, "It seems like the projections for Newton with the Patriots have been optimistic: that he'll win the job, unlock a side of Josh McDaniels that's been hindered by slow-ass Tom Brady, etc. My money is spread out over the best and worst options. I could see him having a Pro Bowl year. I could also see him being either unhealthy or not what he was pre-injury, which is why I think there's going to be an actual competition for the starting job."
Bean goes on to say even if Newton gets hurt or cut, that there is now lose situation here for the Patriots with the Newton contract. However, He also noted that Tannehill got paid a huge sum of money after his one season in Tennessee this offseason. Bean goes on to say having to earn the millions in incentives is a slap in the face to Newton, and believes that's how Cam sees it. Even if he's saying all the right things at the moment.
Bean goes on to say, "He won't be fully vindicated until he gets paid like the star he'll once again be. If he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league, that's $30 million plus, depending on what happens with the cap. When kicking around potential "if it all goes well" contracts for Newton, our Tom E. Curran made a good point in bringing up Ryan Tannehill, a player with similar service time and an obviously worse career getting four years and $118 million after one great season with a new team."
It's doubtful Bill is going to break the bank on one player. The league is talking about shrinking the 2021 cap. That means next season the Patriots may not have $100 million. They may only have $75 to $80 Million. The Patriots find themselves in a situation where unless Newton signs for around $20 Million, a Brady type deal; this "Dog" is going to find a new yard in 2021.
