That should've motivated Stidham. Stidham has been working out all summer with Hoyer, Edelman, and a plethora of other Patriots. I am sure there has been a chip on his shoulders.
That's everything prior to this week. With the Cam Newton signing it might have a few more things added. Belichick doesn't believe in Stidham. His career is done. He'll never start in New England. He cannot beat out Newton.
Rick Doyle of NESN asked how will Stidham react to the signing. Obviously, he'll be professional but will that chip get bigger. Nobody does better than a player with a chip on their shoulder and with the amount of disrespect coming his way, he should be furious.
Doyle wrote, "It seemed like Stidham was poised to replace Tom Brady as New England’s starting quarterback in 2020, prompting an outpouring of support for the second-year signal-caller and extensive debate as to whether he’d ultimately represent Bill Belichick’s latest stroke of genius. Now, there are inherent questions regarding Stidham’s confidence and competence, even though the Newton deal likely has nothing to do with the man he’ll presumably usurp atop the Patriots’ Brady-less QB depth chart in 2020."
Doyle says Stidham can lay down and take it and just let all the doubters be right, or he can show up, do his job, beat Newton out and be the next man up.
NFL Media’s Mike Giardi said Thursday on WEEI’s Greg Hill Show,” as transcribed by WEEI.com, “To me, this is a great test for Stidham because look, when he comes in last year, he’s not beating out Tom Brady, we all know he’s not beating out Tom Brady. So you learn, you observe, he got more first-team reps because Brady didn’t always practice, all those sorts of things. But there was no competition there — I guess competition with Brian Hoyer, but let’s face it, Brian is what he is. This is sort of a competition.”
People disrespect Brian Hoyer who like Brady over the last two seasons, Newton during his time in Carolina, and Stidham's Last year at Auburn; has been under nothing but bad circumstances. Hoyer looked good from 2013-2015 and look what he had coaching him. Look at the front offices. Look at the rosters but people have written Hoyer off. Talk about having a chip in his shoulder.
If the Newton who showed he can win shows up, Stidham and Hoyer might not even get to compete. Doesn't mean come the bye that we cannot have a different starting quarterback in New England.
Doyle wrote if Newton is just handed the starting job, "that doesn’t mean Stidham can’t give the Patriots something to think about, much like Jimmy Garoppolo did in his three-plus seasons with New England before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. It just might win over his teammates and pave the way for a starting job down the road, whether it’s because Newton leaves New England or the Patriots eventually decide Stidham is better equipped for the gig."
Mike Giardi had also hinted at this during his interview, “This forces a little bit of, ‘OK, show me something now because you thought maybe you were going to be the guy and now we are telling you Cam Newton is here, so put your chips on the table. Show me what you got. Try to convince the teammates that maybe the gravitational pull is over there, but I am the better quarterback now. That I think is probably what they are hoping for, some sort of buck up from Stidham saying, ‘No, no. This is my team.’ I think that will be the interesting thing if and when we get to camp.”
The fortune tellers have read Newton's tea leaves, They're still deciphering Stidham's. The Patriots enhanced their quarterback room and Stidham should appreciate the opportunity to compete and learn from Newton. The Patriots have to do what's best for their corporation, and that means Stidham has to do the same for.himself.
NESN's Sean T. McGwire weighted in. He doesn't think Stidham should take it personally, nor does he think the signing has much to do with Stidham but insurancing that the team wins.
McGwire wrote, "Where I draw the line, however, is in regards to this signing meaning the Patriots aren’t confident in Stidham long term. I don’t believe this deal means that is the case.
Newton’s one-year contract means the Patriots can wipe their hands of him after 2020. They have no long-term ties to Newton, specifically regarding guaranteed money. This decision was not the same as going out and signing a quarterback (i.e. Teddy Bridgewater) to a long-term deal, or using a high-end draft pick on a player at the position (i.e. Jordan Love). Those would show less confidence in Stidham’s future."
While Stidham and even Hoyer need to take this as a chance to grow. Both quarterback need to have a chip the size of Peyton Manning's forehead on their shoulders. Newton will be coming in fired up and they need to show the same intensity and determination. Like they say in highlander, "There can only be 1!"
