Peter Panacy wrote an article asking if the Patriots should grab a top tier quarterback if they fall to 23. Let's take a look and I'll try to give my opinion.
People have been trying to get into Belichick's mind. With exception to Tom Coughlin during the two Giants superbowl victories, nobody's been able to get into Bill's head.
The Patriots have not taken a quarterback in the first round since Drew Bledsoe in 1993. Jarrett Stidham may have been a first round quarterback to slip down. After reading many scouts and NFL insiders, Jarrett had first round talent and that wasn't why he fell out of the first round. But let's continue with the article.
Belichick is not an idiot. If Burrow or Tagovailoa fall, Bill will be pondering why. It's rare that the projected number one falls, and it normally means there are red flags.
When it comes to Jackson, The Patriots helped push and promote his draft stock. It was almost as if they were trying to bait someone into drafting him. It was unusual for how much attention the team was giving him. The Patriots don't give out information they don't want to know. The Ravens took the bait. The question is, was it the Ravens who Belichick was baiting with Jackson?
Why did Herbert not have the season he was projected to have in 2019? Who was Jordan Love or Joe Burrows prior to the 2019 season? How serious are the red flags being raised about Tagovailoa's prior injuries? These are questions many NFL fans are not asking but the Patriots will already have thought of and answered by the time their pick comes.
The Patriots need a quarterback back, however they are in a win win situation with Stidham. If Stidham Succeeds, they will have a playoff quarterback and their franchise. If he fails, the offense fails and the team will be in a position to trade up for Trevor. The most likely time for a quarterback to be taken in the 2020 draft will be someplace between the third to fifth round. A quarterback in the mid round would give the Patriots a potential starter and a quality backup. It would also allow the team the opportunity to grab needs to continue to build and stay competitive. Linebacker and interior defensive lineman are bigger needs with the number 23 overall pick.
Relax and stop overthinking things. There's a very simple phrase that will allow us to breathe. "In Bill We Trust!" , as long as you keep that phrase in mind, there's no need to worry about what ifs because we know Bill has it covered. That my friends is the "Patriots Way".
