The Patriots signed 27 year old quarterback Trace McSorley. Here's a quick recap on what they said coming out of college.
39 game college starter. Played 43 games
Touchdown pass percentage 6.3%, Interception percentage 2.1%. Sacked 78 times, 77 times as starter.
3.61 rushing average 30 touchdowns. 15 fumbles - 7 lost.
(1 NFL start.)
Pros
Leader that exudes confidence who's not afraid to take a hit in the pocket or on the run. RPO-Zone quarterback, can extend plays and drives with his legs or stand in the pocket and deliver under pressure. Throws with timing / anticipation. Ideal arm for hitting short to intermediate routes. Trusts his pass catchers, even when they aren't deservant. Cerebal quarterback that beats defenses with his eyes and mind. Has athleticism for positional versatility and has slot receiver speed and quickness.
Cons
Undersized for traditional pro offenses. Needs to put more arc on his passes, defenders got slap happy. Arm strength on deep passes is inconsistent and caused accuracy issues. Mechanics need work on deep passes. Accuracy issues combined with drop issues from pass catchers. Trust his arm more than he should, willing to throw contested passes unlike more intelligent passers that avoid them. Hears footsteps or in more Patriots like terms, "sees ghosts."
NFL Comparisons:
Chase Daniel to Case Keenum. Two other quarterbacks that some compared to Keenum were Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.
McSorley's scouting reports read as a more athletic but less developed and less accurate version of the his two Patriots teammates. Mind you, he's had time in the league to develop. While he doesn't have experience in the Patriots system, He did spend time with John Harbaugh and Kliff Kingsbury.
He's not a lock but he's got potential to stick around as a third string and practice squad guy. Is he an upgrade over Brian Hoyer is the question one must ask.
