Patriots Draft Preview

The Patriots have some needs to address in the upcoming draft. They also have twelve draft picks and four in the top one hundred. Let's look at what the Patriots draft looks like and talk about their needs.
Team Needs
Linebacker (2): With the Departures of Van Noy, Roberts, and Collins the Patriots are clearly in need to replenish their core. The team still has Hightower and Bentley but the ragtag left after them is yet unproven.
Interior Defensive Line (2): With the loss of Shelton and Butler, the Patriots have a  gaping hole right up the middle of their defense. If the Patriots cannot fill that hole, there won't be a need for their secondary.
Kicker: With Gostkowski the 38 yard line was field goal range. If the Patriots cannot kick 50 yard field goals and accurately, they're gonna lose a lot of games.
Tight end (2): Ryan Izzo played okay until his concussion set him back. Matt Lacosse and Ben Watson were unreliable. The Patriots tried to replace Gronkowski with ASJ. The NFL might want to put out a missing person's for as he left personal reasons and was never seen again.
Center:
There's no guarantee Andrews will be a go week one. Ted Karrass is gone. The Patriots could try to slide one of their red shirted rookies, Froholdt or Cajuste in the role but can the two draft steals be trusted?
Safety (2):
McCourty and Chung are both getting old. The Patriots have a deep secondary but there is no telling how much longer either has in the tank. Drafting their replacements now will allow Belichick to move on when the time comes.

Top Fits
Linebacker:
Malik Harrison Ohio St
Justin Strnad Wake Forest
Markus Bailey Purdue

Interior Defensive Line:
Ross Blacklock TCU
Davin Hamilton Ohio St
Marion Davidson Auburn

Kicker:
Jonathan Song TCU
Rodrigo Blankenship Georgia
Sam Sloman Miami Ohio
Jake Koehnke Air Force

Tight End:
Albert Okwuegunam Missouri
Cheyenne O'Grady Arkansas
Jacob Breeland Oregon
Jared Pinkney Vanderbilt

Center:
Netane Muti Fresno St
Lloyd Cushenbury III LSU
Cesar Ruiz Michigan
Jonah Jackson Ohio St

Safety:
Julian Blackmon Utah
Jaron Bryant Fresno St.
Jeremy Chinn S ILLINOIS

Other needs and names:
Receiver KJ Hamler Penn St, Edge rusher Darrell Taylor Tennessee, Return specialist Joe Reed Virginia, Fullback Spencer Nigh Auburn, Backup Quarterback Jalen Hurts Oklahoma, Tyler Huntley Utah, Malcolm Perry Navy, or the long shot chance that someone gets stuck on stupid and passes on him, Jordan Love.

The team has 12 picks but in my honest opinion the team needs to acquire a minimum three more picks to be set for the 2020 NFL season, as long as Belichick continues to find UDFA gold. Expect the Patriots to trade out the first round with Cincinnati or Indianapolis. Honestly if the team traded repeatedly down until their first pick was in the third round, they would still be fine talent wise in this draft.

If you want to know who else would be good fits for the Patriots, Check out the article on the 140 man big board or go over to TDN and see the Board. It doesn't have all the big stars but it does have quality pieces that are versatile and would be good fits.

What Are the Patriots doing If They're not Rebuilding?

Patrick Morgan of Musket Fire posed the question in his latest article. Many of Patriots Nation are confused about Belichick's actions or lack of. Plus there are those who want Belichick to dismantle the Patriots so they can get Trevor and have no team around when they're done tanking. Let's look at his article.
Because many of us count it as once dynasty counting the two superbowl losses to the Giants, I say the Dynasty started with the 96 superbowl team. When you look at the roster the number of players carried over from one the losing team to the first victory and the short time span, you can see why. Historic is an understatement.
I put a lot of blame on the play calling for the 2019 season but maybe the blame should've been split with Brady not wanting to work with his pass catchers. The other thing that people ignore are the departures and injuries the team faced. What was Belichick to do when Gronk retires late and then his replacement (ASJ) walks away for personal reasons?
The losing the first round bye was a call for concern. It is clear that the offense couldn't get it going. I always wondered why Bill stuck with Marshall Newhouse instead of bringing back Antonio Gates but that's wonder under the bridge. As far as Brady goes, the Bread crumbs were there, before the Stern interview. Brady wanted out. The Patriots also have Jarrett Stidham and $800,000 in cap. Dismantling the team to get a quarterback doesn't help the 2020 Patriots.
That's not a bad Idea. If you go back and look at the reports on Stidham, the reason he fell out of the first round in 2019 had nothing to do with his talent but decline in stats and circumstances at Auburn. Stidham sat behind the Goat for a year and Practiced with the first string offense against a top 5 defense. That's experience most rookies don't get.
The Patriots have twelve draft picks, and I suspect Belichick will Trade down from the number 23, to get the team between 15-21 picks. The Patriots have been developing linebackers. It would not be shocking to see the Patriots spend seven picks to sure up their front seven.

The offense has players returning from Injury. Unlike some in Patriots Nation, I still believe Cajuste and Froholdt are draft steals and will be huge contributors in 2020. If the Patriots could land Muti and either Jonah Jackson or Cushenbury, The Patriots would be set could Trade Thuney if so desired. Then don't ignore the importance of a healthy fullback.
The coaching staff lost Dante Scarnecchia, the defensive line coach, the acting wide receiver coach and the special teams coordinator. It is far from looking like the same. Hopefully the Patriots promote Troy Brown to the role of Receivers' coach. Who's gonna fill the other holes, I don't know. Former wildcat guard and host of DPN Mr. Ray Rauth keeps saying he has big news, maybe he's gonna replace the offensive line guru.

As far as the 2020 offense goes, we cannot call it subpar until after not olny we see what happens in the draft but who gets signed before the preseason. I have been okay with what Mr. Morgan has wrote but would've thought he'd of had that kinda respect for the Patriots front office.
So having a fully healthy returning offensive line apparantly doesn't mean anything to Mr. Morgan. The Patriots could not run behind Marshall Newhouse. To make matters worse, Ted Karras could not pick up the slack of his teammates or needed help in whichever case caused the Interior of the line to be less productive. At worst Andrew's will sit on the bench until ready to start. Bill won't make the mistake of putting him on the pup like he did Wynn. Being able to stand in the pocket or to run to either side of the line is an instant improvement over the 2019 offense.

The Patriots are in a win win, if the offense stays the same, they should be able to stay in games. If they improve the team will be right back on top of the AFC. If they fall, they're gonna be in a position to get Trevor Lawrence or any of the top offensive targets in 2021. If you're not optimistic even no matter the outcome of this season, you really should take a look at the bigger picture.

What Happens if a top Tier quarterback falls to 23?

Peter Panacy wrote an article asking if the Patriots should grab a top tier quarterback if they fall to 23. Let's take a look and I'll try to give my opinion.
People have been trying to get into Belichick's mind. With exception to Tom Coughlin during the two Giants superbowl victories, nobody's been able to get into Bill's head.
The Patriots have not taken a quarterback in the first round since Drew Bledsoe in 1993. Jarrett Stidham may have been a first round quarterback to slip down. After reading many scouts and NFL insiders, Jarrett had first round talent and that wasn't why he fell out of the first round. But let's continue with the article.
Belichick is not an idiot. If Burrow or Tagovailoa fall, Bill will be pondering why. It's rare that the projected number one falls, and it normally means there are red flags.

When it comes to Jackson, The Patriots helped push and promote his draft stock. It was almost as if they were trying to bait someone into drafting him. It was unusual for how much attention the team was giving him. The Patriots don't give out information they don't want to know. The Ravens took the bait. The question is, was it the Ravens who Belichick was baiting with Jackson?
Why did Herbert not have the season he was projected to have in 2019? Who was Jordan Love or Joe Burrows prior to the 2019 season? How serious are the red flags being raised about Tagovailoa's prior injuries? These are questions many NFL fans are not asking but the Patriots will already have thought of and answered by the time their pick comes.
The Patriots need a quarterback back, however they are in a win win situation with Stidham. If Stidham Succeeds, they will have a playoff quarterback and their franchise. If he fails, the offense fails and the team will be in a position to trade up for Trevor. The most likely time for a quarterback to be taken in the 2020 draft will be someplace between the third to fifth round. A quarterback in the mid round would give the Patriots a potential starter and a quality backup. It would also allow the team the opportunity to grab needs to continue to build and stay competitive. Linebacker and interior defensive lineman are bigger needs with the number 23 overall pick.

Relax and stop overthinking things. There's a very simple phrase that will allow us to breathe. "In Bill We Trust!" , as long as you keep that phrase in mind, there's no need to worry about what ifs because we know Bill has it covered. That my friends is the "Patriots Way".

The Book On Stidham

If you're a member of Patriots Nation, most of the conversations around the team are about Tom Brady or Jarrett Stidham. Even the media cannot seem.to talk about anything else when it comes to the most dominant team over the last 20 years. I am going to take a look at an article by Deyscha Smith called "3 things we learned from bleacher reports Feature on Jarrett Stidham". I will be giving my opinion as we go.

"[They] believe he's ready to take over for Tom Brady."

Okay, so how often is a team interviewed and the team criticize and trash one of their own? It rarely happens in any sport. The Patriots need Stidham confident going forward and aren't going to say anything that could cause a set back to his development. So to start we must keep that in mind. Let's continue.
Stidham made a smart choice to leave Baylor. Taking a year off did not help him but being part of a scandal would've done considerable damage to his career.
Between 2015 and 2016, six schools had decent passing programs Arkansas. Ole miss, Miss st, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri. The passing in the SEC was nothing special, especially at Auburn. I don't know what Auburn offers educationally but from a pure football Prospective, Auburn was a bad decision to attend.
I have said before that prior to the start of the 2018 season Stidham was not only viewed as a first round selection but I also shared an article that had CBS Sports having him being selected the sixth player off the board. There were a lot of things that went wrong in 2018. It clearly was the wrong school and program for Jarrett to be a part of.
The problem wasn't Stidham's talent level. That has been made evident. In almost every scouting report and article on Stidham, this is the one thing he seems to get praise for. Which begs the question, did his draft stock truly fall solely because he had a bad statistical year? If so, scouts never learned the lesson that stats don't mean everything.
The Patriots brought in Brian Hoyer to compete with Stidham and to mentor the young quarterback. Stidham got to sit a year behind Tom Brady and study the GOAT, while also practicing with the first string offense against the Boogeymen defensive unit. With that kinda experience under his belt, the Patriots might sit Stidham a year behind Hoyer to continue to develop before unleashing him into the NFL.
One cannot say there will never be another Tom Brady. People said that about Joe Montana when he retired in 1994. While a better athlete, Steve Young was a playoff and superbowl winning quarterback but he did not have the intelligence or clutch of Joe Cool. It wouldn't be until the 2001 season before the NFL found someone who showed he could be something special. It's unfair to hold any quarterback including Stidham to that level at the beginning of their career.

If Stidham truly is a playoff quarterback, that's a miracle in itself, that fans of the Patriots must appreciate because teams rarely have back to back franchise quarterbacks, and the Patriots would be on their third. Which in itself would be NFL history, going back to the gun slinger Bledsoe drafted in the first round back in 1993, nearly 30 years. When is the last time any pro sports team had a playoff caliber team for 30 years? The New York Yankees are probably the only with a legacy that out shines the Patriots.

Working On My Writing.

In some of my previous articles I have attempted to do my own scouting reports on potential draft Prospects in the 2020 NFL draft. I watch some game film or film room videos. I watch highlight videos, read and listened to reports and checked player stats.

One thing I have been worried about is plagiarizing somebody else's Profile on a player. Thus I found my self over using terms like low risk high reward. I also list needs development instead of listing players flaws. It reads like Im making every player sound like an instant hall of famer.

I know what I see & hear. Sometimes what I see goes with what others have written in a Profile, sometimes I see things others miss. I am not a professional scout, analysts or writer. So I am not always sure how to write the player Profiles. English was always my worst subject.

I am also not really sure how to scout offensive linemen, or defensive line moves/techniques. Does a lineman move well, do they get their hands on the defender, Do they get pushed around, do they allow the defender to the ball. That's what I look at for offensive line. Defenders is do they get to the ball, do they plug holes, do they disrupt the pocket, can they tackle. That's what I look for on the Defensive line. Anything else on the line I need to rely on others

Since I read a lot of them, my biggest worry is that I will write something that I  have read without realizing it. I try to give my own opinion. I am trying to work on it. I am also going to be trying something new with my articles. I will be sharing and giving my thoughts. Maybe that will improve my scouting articles.

I want to thank all that read my blogs. I only get maybe 20 views a blog but it makes my day to see that I have entertained and maybe educated you a little. Be safe during this virus.

Could Gronk Be Traded To Tampa

NFL Insider Leroy reported that fullback Anthony Sherman was resinging with the Kansas City Chiefs before it happened. Now he is reporting the Gronk wants to play with Brady in Tampa.  While highly unlikely, read the tweet.
Last year, Robert Kraft had said Gronkowski never signed his retirement papers. Every time Gronk would say he was done, shortly after he would re open the door with a you never know. It's no secret that Patriots players are treated like corporate employees, and it's all work.

So if Gronk wants to play a couple of things need to happen. First, the Patriots hold the rights and there's no way Bill Belichick is going to cut him.  We have seen players retire early to go elsewhere. We have also seen players retire and have their rights traded. Then there are situations like Barry Sanders and Dan Marino, where the teams kept the rights to the players and refused to grant them from finding a new team.

Thus a trade must be reached. Gronk when healthy is worth a first round pick. In 2018 he was a shell of himself and wasnt worth more than a fifth rounder.

Don't expect a trade for O.J. Howard. Gronk's value due to injury is around mid round level. So a fourth or a fourth round player equivalent would be the trade value , give or take. If Gronkowski wanted to return, a trade would be barring he could pass a physical and could get a release from his WWE contract. Currently, Rob Gronkowski is the 24/7 championship. Adding to the number of WWE title holders to come from western NY.

Stidham Will Get Opportunity But Will He Take Advantage

Chris Mason of Mass live wrote an article: "New England Patriots are going to give Jarrett Stidham every opportunity, Says former executive Mike Lombardi". By now we should all know this but let's dive in and see what the article had to say.

“We’re learning that because people are on television, me included, there is a sense of opinion, Todd is giving his opinion. He has every right to give his opinion because ESPN pays him for his opinion. What you try to do is base some of your opinions on facts. Where I think Todd, unless he knows somebody in that building, I don’t know if he has any facts to his opinion.” - Mike Lombardi

For anyone with intelligence this is common sense. As Patriots fans, we know nothing gets out unless the team wants it to and it's never the big picture. Television personalities have to play a character. If they don't draw in ratings, they don't have a job. They might have some intelligence, they might be good at story telling but they don't care how accurate their opinions are.

Lombardi wasn't done. “I think Stidham is way better than Todd does. I think Stidham was a better college player, Now, do I think the Patriots could easily go out and sign Cam Newton? Yeah, I think there is no doubt they could easily go out and sign Cam Newton. I think if they could sign Jameis Winston, if he didn’t have some of the off-the-field stuff with him I think they would probably go out and sign Jameis Winston."

Jarrett Stidham prior to the 2018 college season was looked at as a first round pick. CBS had him going sixth overall in the 2019 draft before a bad 2018 college season. In 2017 Stidham completed 66.5% of his passes for 3158 yards. Throwing 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

Stidham had a number of things go wrong that were out of his control. In fact as we know stats don't always tell the tale and the same reasons Patriots nation has made for Brady over the last two seasons can be made for Stidham's 2018 Colgate season, where Stidham's stat line read 60.7% completion percentage for 2794 yards. Throwing 18 touchdowns and 5 Interceptions.

Another thing to consider is the Patriots only have little over $800,000 in cap space. The team cannot afford their draft picks at the moment regardless if they plan on drafting a quarterback or not. There is no way at the moment that they are signing a Cam Newton or Jameis Winston. However, that is another story.

Back to Lombardi "That being said, they’re going to give Stidham every opportunity. Where I think Todd misses the boat here a little bit is that they’re not all-in on Stidham. Stidham is going to have to earn it. Where they’re not being blinded by Stidham. They’re not being the Mitchell Trubisky, MVP Mitch, and just saying, ‘OK it’s your job.’ They’re going to go in with an open mind. That, to me, is more important than anything.”

Of course Stidham is going to earn his job. Nobody is handed anything in New England. Doesn't matter how long you been with the team. Now keep in mind Stidham gained valuable experience sitting behind and studying Tom Brady. He also got a year to practice against a top five defense with the first string. There's no reason not to take a chance on Stidham for a season to see if he has the It factor. Hoyer wasn't just brought into hold a clip board. Hoyer is there to remind Stidham that his job is in jeopardy. Best case scenario the Patriots go 11-5, win the east and are back in the hunt. Worst case, they're in a position to trade up for Trevor in 2021. It's a win - win situation for the Patriots

Mike Lombardi: Patriots are going to give Jarrett Stidham every opportunity

The Patriots should move on their ponys

At age 28, James White is arguably the best and most valuable back the Patriots could trade away. A superbowl hero, White is clutch and would become the instant number one on half the teams. The Patriots are in need of salary cap space and White is slated to make $4.59 million in 2020 and getting rid if him would save $3.46 million.

Rex Burkhead when healthy has showed he can be a solid number two back. The problem with Burkhead is he is injury prone and inconsistent. Brandon Bolden has shown he can do everything Burkhead can do at a lower level with exception to special teams. Burkhead spent time trying to learn to field punts because he knew his value was diminishing. Burkhead is a year older than White and slated with a cap hit of $3.9 million. The team could save $2.9 million by cutting him. Burkhead could be moved for a sixth round pick.

Brandon Bolden plays special teams and is a lesser skilled Rex Burkhead. Bolden is 30 years old and scheduled to make $1.98 million in 2020. There are probably a hundred backs that can match Bolden's skill level and would come at a lot less. Releasing or trading Bolden would free up $1.4 million dollars.

Now while White and Bolden look like the Patriots should move on from both, It's Burkhead and Bolden the team should move on from. With a young quarterback White's leadership is invaluable. The combined cap savings of Bolden and Burkhead would be at least four draft picks. The Patriots could trade them in a combo package for a fifth round pick or cut them. The team is in need of talent and there are at least 20 names in the draft who can take on both roles on the team by themselves, creating roster space. That's just the players I researched.

The Patriots have a whole department who's jobs are to find players, so I am sure my numbers are low. The players I have looked at are between sixth round to undrafted projections. The Patriots have Damien Harris and Sony Michell, so they don't need more than a day three talent. As we saw with Harris, talent falls in the draft all the time. Adding $4.3 million to the salary cap, while not a lot, would go a long way.

The Patriots should also cut Lacosse and save $1.3 Million and with Burkhead and Bolden bring the cap up to $6.4 Million. This would make trying to move some of Gilmore's salary to 2021, a reasonable request.

The Pats as stated need to clear up cap room. Fans are going to the extreme, talking about trading the likes of White, Hightower, Thuney, Mccourty and Gilmore. Patriots Nation is over thinking this. There's an old saying work smarter, not harder. Instead of the Patriots trying to find trade partners for high cap players and then negotiating fair trade deals, then finding replacements players and training them, the Patriots can look at expendable players who can free up cap and who's replacements won't need a lot of work to develop. Yes, Bill likes to move on early but don't jump the gun. All Belichick needs to do is make enough room for the draft picks and a few low tier injury emergency players, that way the team can get through 2020.

Stidham Looks Like The Guy In This Mock Draft.

In my latest mock draft the Patriots appear to be content with Stidham as their starter. The Patriots draft off team needs and seem to fill all their holes. The Patriots don't have a lot of cap and trade down from 23 acquiring three additional picks. While the team missed out on a few players, the team will be poised to control the AFC East, if they have the right guy under center in 2020.
  • 46.

    Malik Harrison

    LB,
A big athletic linebacker who can shed blocks and stop the run. Can play any of the linebacker positions. Should be a SAM or a Mike linebacker. His ability to play man or zone is still untapped and much unknown. Adds depth to the special teams. While there is room for development, should be a contributor on day one.
"One-time highly rated linebacker best up the field or in the box. Aggressive, fires up the field and drives through tackles. Very quick and nicely redirects to the ball carrier. Stout tackler who brings opponents down at the point of attack. Possesses an explosive closing burst, plays with violence and blows through blocks to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Effectively uses his hands to disengage from opponents. Rarely off his feet." -PFN
  • 87.

    Netane Muti

    IOL,
Muti is projected as a Zone Guard but I think the Patriots will try him out at center. There's no Guarantee that Andrew's will come back healthy but if he does, Muti would make Thuney tradable by the deadline. Muti has experience at both guard and tackle. He is very athletic and can move to secure his blocks or be a solid anchor. Might be the best Interior offensive lineman in the draft.
"if his future team is able to keep him on the field and healthy, it’s Muti has the potential to be a significant steal in the draft. He has fringe first round ability and is a starter at guard for any team that runs a blocking scheme based on zone blocking concepts. The question is where teams are comfortable taking that risk. " - Big Blue View
  • 98.

    Albert Okwuegbunam

    TE,
Albert O is underrated by many. I have seen comparisons to both Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski. Both are compliments. If Albert can play upto the level of either, the Patriots will find a pass catcher sorely missed in 2019.
"He shows good overall athleticism and versatility for the position. In the run game he is good due to his willingness to come off the ball and strike. He demonstrates good technique as an inline blocker and keeps his hands inside. In the passing game he has aligned inline, at “H”, and even flexed out as an “F”. He shows good speed when running seams and other deep routes in the passing game. He demonstrates good toughness to catch the football when contact is imminent. He demonstrates good tracking ability when the ball is in the air. He also displays good, natural hands and rarely allows the ball into his frame." - Harris the Draft Network
  • 100.

    Kenny Willekes

    EDGE,
Willekes will be either a OLB in the 34 or a 43 end. Willekes has a good mix if power, agility, and speed. He should be able to set the edge with ease and create problems on passing downs. Playing opposite of Winovich the Patriots should have a solid edge containment and again be a top defense as long as they can sure up the middle of the line.
"Racking up 47.5 tackles for loss and 22 sacks from 2017-2019, Wilekes has been a highly productive defender for Michigan State. He plays with unmatched urgency and is highly competitive. While he may not have the highest ceiling, Willekes does have a high floor as a 4-3 defensive end. His modest play strength and athleticism will present challenges defeating blocks in the NFL and he’ll need to become more reliant on his technique which has room for growth. At a minimum, Willekes should be a valuable rotational end and his upside is contingent on if he can get stronger and become more nuanced." -Marino TDN
  • 125.

    Markus Bailey

    LB,
With the loss of three linebackers the Patriots need to do something. The leadership ability and athleticsm of will be missed but they are replaceable.
"Aligns stacked at OLB on the strong and weak side for the Boilermaker even front defense. Defensively they have aligned with some hybrid principles and he has aligned as an OLB  when they have gone to an odd front. Has shown the positional flexibility to flex out over the slot WR, reroute him in space from an off position and carry the route upfield.  Good instincts with regards to run fits and consistently does a good job leveraging the football. Displays excellent football IQ and instincts for the position. Also shows very good mental quickness to diagnose run/pass and locate the football. Skill set suggests he could call the defense and still execute his assignment." -Harris the draft network
  • 136.

    Cheyenne O'Grady

    TE,
It's clear the Patriots cannot rely on Lacosse or Izzo to play the number one or two role at tight end. The Patriots were in dire need of both pass catchers and blockers in 2019. O"Grady can fill that role and adds depth to the fullback position. This might be a bit early but still a solid pick up.
"Cheyenne O’Grady brings an exciting pass catching skill set to the table where his hands, ball skills and ability to win after the catch are standout traits. He would be a wonderful security blanket for an NFL quarterback but he also has the ability to stretch the field and bust zone coverage. While there is room for technical growth, O’Grady gives great effort as a blocker and he’s more than willing. In addition to the need to fine tune his route running skills, the biggest concern with O’Grady is his off field history. He was suspended three different times at Arkansas and left the team in November of 2019. He has the ability to start and be a meaningful option in an NFL passing game if he can be reliable." -Marino TDN
  • 141.

    Justin Strnad

    LB,
Strnad can play anywhere, including special teams. With the departures of Van Noy, Robert's, and Collins the Patriots will need to make sure they have their core Rebuilt. "Justin Strnad projects favorably as a next level linebacker thanks to his range and explosiveness. Strnad took notable steps forward in his final season with the Deacs, showing more confidence in his reads and more trust in his eyes to break on action quickly. Strnad can continue to increase his productivity with continued focus on stacking blocks and keeping his frame clean, but there's plus skills to work in space as is. Can be a starter in an even front as the WILL linebacker playing in space." - Crabbs Draft Network
  • 172.

    Raequan Williams

    IDL,
With the loss of Shelton and Butler, the Patriots have some what of a hole in the Interior of their defensive line. The Patriots are not looking to have a sack machine, just a guy who can plug the hole.
"While Williams may not be an instant plug and play starter at the next level, he could rise to that in the near future. He has all the assets needed to be a solid run stuffer and while his pass rush potential may not be as high, it is not obsolete. His pedigree and experience also give him a helping hand. Starting 42 consecutive games in the MSU is highly impressive and gives Williams some valuable experience, especially as the outlook on rookie minicamps and OTAs look murky at best. He would be a suitable candidate to bolster the interior depth..." - Daniel Valente Steelers Depot
  • 178.

    Tyler Clark

    IDL,
Again there is a hole in the Interior line that needs to be filled. Clark should be a good 3-4 Nose guard. Teamed with Williams the Patriots would no longer have a hole and would need the linebackers to do their job.
"Clark plays with strong and active hands, and utilizes a violent and quick swim that leaves offensive lineman in a full lunge. Quick lateral movements and closing speed for his size. Strong tackler when he’s able to get ball carriers within his grasp. Uses his length to keep offensive lineman from getting under his pads, constantly playing with his eyes in the backfield. Solid interior penetrator who rarely gets caught with his eyes down or getting blown off the line of scrimmage. Strength in his upper body allows him to torque offensive lineman and disengage. When he’s playing with proper leverage, he’ll split double teams and beat reaches with ease. He dominated the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma’s highly touted offensive line. Solid build to play from shade or at the 3-tech at 6’4 and 300 pounds." TDN

    Rodrigo Blankenship

    K,
Automatic under 40 with power to kick the long ball. With the loss of Gostkowski, the Patriots have a major spot to fill. This would be the steal of the draft.
"Charismatic kicker and fan favorite -- as long as he's making his kicks. His thick, black-rimmed glasses have become his trademark, but so too are booming touchbacks and a big leg to hit 50-yard field goals with plenty of ball flight leftover. Blankenship rarely mishits the football, but does need to make sure he elevates drive kicks consistently. He should be the first kicker off the board." -NFL.com

    Tyler Huntley

    QB,
The Patriots could use a back up and with a little development he could push Hoyer off the team. Huntley could one day be a starter IMO but here he's just a back up selection.
"Superb runner with the ball in his hands. Has the agility to make read keys miss in tight quarters and the burst to win the edge and threaten the third level. As a passer, can put zip on the ball getting it into the boundary: arm strength isn't legendary, but it's fine. Can throw with touch down the field and has a few bucket throws on tape, especially when hitting the outside shoulder on the boundary. Has a nice over-the-top release to keep the ball on a rope; can adjust arm angles when pressure dictates. Loses no accuracy or velocity on the move and can throw from the silliest of platforms. Is instinctual feeling pressure on his backside and has the flexibility and strength to break tackles in the pocket. Seems like a gamer." - Solak TDN

    Joe Reed

    WR,
The Patriots have room to develop a number five receiver and also could use to add some youth on special teams. The Patriots clearly did not have the return game one would've hoped for in 2019.
"Has outstanding speed and field vision with the ball in his that makes him a multifaceted weapon as a kick returner, runner and creator after the catch. Has emerged for Virginia, and developed his receiving skill set nicely. While he can win down the field, he isn’t just a deep threat. Showcases good hands, body control and ball tracking skills. Decisive with the ball in his hands and he has the juice to break pursuit angles. Has excellent vision and creativity with the ball in his hands. Experienced lining up in multiple places (wide/slot/backfield/h-back) and executed routes with good tempo. Thick, stocky frame. Should be a standout special teamer both returning and covering kicks." - Marino TDN

    Omar Bayless

    WR,
The Patriots are still pretty deep with Edelman, Sanu, Harry, and Meyers. With Edelman getting up there, the team should look to adding one more pass catcher. Getting to learn from both Sanu and Edelman could Fasttrac Bayless's development. "Omar Bayless is an intriguing late bloomer who will warrant consideration as a developmental talent. Bayless exploded in a big way in 2019 and will have to answer concerns about being a one year wonder — but he's got the size, ball skills and hands to be an effective target if he's able to further develop his route breaks and become a more consistent separator before he's got the ball in his hands. Upside is an NFL starter but he'll need more polish in his game to get there." - Crabbs TDN

    Kelvin Smith

    TE,
There's no guarantee that any of the current fullbacks on the Roster are going to produce. Smith is a receiving threat who can line up as the in line when not in the back field. One thing that hurt the Patriots was not having a true fullback in 2019. Smith's versatility should allow for a camp battle at fullback or tight end. It's been a while since the Patriots have had a true pass catching threat from the fullback position.

    Tommy Kraemer

    IOL,
Like with Muti, I expect the Patriots to use Kraemer at Center. Kraemer will need some development.
"Huge, wide, big, large. Really tough to work around in pass protection given the sheer breadth and length he brings to the interior. Also present an issue on combo/scoop blocks as he wins on half-man relationships and walls off the second level nicely when working off of doubles. Has a headhunter's mentality when he's uncovered and regularly broadsides unsuspecting rushers as a help blocker; will also look to flatten when he's steamrolling into the second level. Has some recovery flexibility when working to re-anchor against bull-rushes and doesn't have much panic in his game when facing power." - Solak TDN

The Sports World Is Dead and Missed

In a normal year, I'd be researching, talking or listening to people talk about New England Patriots free agent and draft Prospects. Checking up on the standings of the Toronto Blue Jays, Utah Jazz, and Tampa Bay Lightning. I might even try to pay attention to who's gonna throw down at Wrestlemania.

This year there is no sport to check the standings of. The MLB, NBA, and NHL are trying to figure out if they're gonna play or not. The wrestling world is performing in empty venues looking more like rehearsals, which is okay for some but it just feels like it's even fake then before. Plus the XFL should be preparing for their playoffs but the season got canceled.

With the Patriots we have people arguing between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Some people are now arguing Tom Brady versus the Patriots. We have people debating if Stidham is a starter, bust, or career back up. There are people arguing over whether to try to win with Stidham or to tank for Trevor. There is very little to zero talk about free agency or the draft. There really is nothing exciting to talk about because Tom Brady sucked the life out of the Patriots off season. Worst part is he still dominates almost every Patriots topic, even though he's a Buccaneer.

Hawaii would normally be having spring football but per normal, there's never any news about their college program in Western New York because sports writers here only care about New York teams and the two New Jersey football teams.

I find myself trying to socialize more via social media and realizing how much I hate people. Too many People need a Gibbs' slap. We have a quarantine and are being asked to social distance. Instead we have people grouping up and or complaining their rights are being taken away by being asked to isolate.

Instead of getting into arguments with them, I turn to video games as a distraction. While it helps, it makes me appreciate professional sports that much more and I cannot wait for some normalcy to return. I cannot wait until Bill Belichick leads the Patriots into the football field again, hopefully that will be in August for the Preseason.
