Patriots re-sign Newton.

The Patriots are taking a huge gamble. Not only are they risking the 2021 season but the development of their offensive players. Minutes after 8 a.m. Jim McBride announced that the Patriots we re-signing Cam Newton  on a one year deal. 

This is a bigger gamble than last season. As a passer Newton is on a backup level, barely better than Brian Hoyer and equal to Jarrett Stidham. The only benefit to his gane is Newton runs like an aged fullback. 

Its unclear how much the Patriots are signing Cam to, and unknown at the moment how bad this will hurt the Patriots' chances of signing free agent pass catchers. The 2020 Patriots were not built for Cam Newton, and the supporting cast ranking fell by 5 points. Largerly due to Newton. It's going to be interesting to see how the Patriots build the 2021 roster and if there's another quarterback competition in 2021.
