Cam Newton fans and the Navy fans will be happy to know he also rushed for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns on 30 carries. It's not anywhere near 1000 yards but it's still a decent average per attempt.
If the Patriots were to bring in Fitzmagic, they would get exactly what they thought they were getting from Brian Hoyer. A game manager with the capability to dink and dunk. Fitzpatrick has a superior arm in comparison to Hoyer but he's also shown he can be at greater risk of turning the ball over. However for Cam Newton fans, that won't be an issue.
Another thing with Fitzpatrick is the fact that he can be inconsistent. Again for Cam Newton fans, that won't be a problem. Fitzpatrick has played 16 seasons in the NFL, at times he looks like a legit starter and other times, he looks like a backup being put in situations above his head.
As a starter, Fitzpatrick is 59-86-1. The savvy veteran as orchestrated 13 fourth quarter comebacks and 18 game winning drives over his career. With how the Patriots are currently constructed, they may need that kind of grit.
PFF wrote the following about Fitzpatrick. “After one of the most volatile careers in recent history, Fitzpatrick has played the best football of his career since 2018 as he’s posted three of his four best PFF grades. His aggressiveness allows playmakers to create chunk plays down the field, but it also allows the defense to make just as many plays on the ball. Still, that style works well with the right supporting cast, and Fitzpatrick has actually done a fine job of maximizing his group of playmakers and subpar offensive line in Miami.”
The Dolphins would be wise to bring back Fitzpatrick but he might want to sign with a team who would give him a chance to start. At 38, Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't going to get a lot of opportunities. As a passer, he's an upgrade over Cam Newton. He might not be able to run like Newton but he can see the field better and he is more accurate. Two major issues for the Patriots passing game in 2020.
The Patriots could bring him in on a year by year deal, while developing a younger quarterback. The Patriots still have Jarrett Stidham under a rookie contract and if we're being honest, Stidham's passing ability is at the same level of Newton's. So no need to pay Newton that much extra to ride the bench, and another year of competition would be good for the 2019 fourth round draft pick.
The fan base has written off Stidham but as my friends over at DPN Commentary like to say, The Patriots know what they have in Stidham. With Fitzpatrick as the starter, having Stidham as the number two for one more year, even if it's while a third quarterback is developing, wouldn't hurt as he could at least run the scout team offense.
Fitzpatrick will probably be asking for $9 - $12 million but for the chance to start, the Patriots should be able to afford him. The Patriots defense isn't that bad and all they have to do is convince him to ride behind a strong running game. This could be a quick marriage with a lot possibilities. If Ryan Fitzpatrick plays well enough, he could make it a two or three year stint.
