Mayo: Hightower and Chung opted out of playing, not coaching

Inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo spoke with reporters on Friday and spoke about several things including the opt outs. When asked about Chung and Hightower, Mayo wasn't shy to answer the question.

Mayo said, “Initially, I was shocked, disappointed. I can’t — a bunch of emotions went through my head. And then I stopped and obviously looked at each situation. These are personal decisions. Obviously, Hightower kind of took step back and just with family and his personal situation, and so did Chung. I certainly respect it.”

Zack Cox of NESN wrote, "According to Mayo, Hightower and Chung will continue to mentor some of New England’s younger players while they sit this season out due to COVID-19 concerns."

If they're not willing to play will the NFL have issues with them being around the team? This kinda makes one wonder if there were ulterior reasons for the players opting out.

Mayo went on to say, “Hightower is one of the smartest players I’ve ever been around, and so is Chung. So those guys aren’t here with us this year, but they’re still around.”

Again, if what Cox write is true, the NFL might put an end to it. If a player is too worried to play, they shouldn't be around.
