What is McDaniels gonna do?

For twenty years, we have seen the "Air West Spread" offense. A hybrid of the west coast, spread and air raid offenses. While Brady wasn't mobile, the Patriots pulled it off.

Tom Brady is gone. Cam Newton, Brian Hoyer, and Jarrett Stidham remain. Two of the three quarterbacks are certainly more mobile than Brady. Hoyer, it's questionable. So what should we expect.

Accord to CLNS's Evan Lazar, we're still gonna see the "same concepts and schemes" but were also gonna see a "more dressed up version of the Tom Brady offense".

The plays were already in the playbook, I guarantee it. They were just buried deep because how often is Brady really gonna run a triple option or RPO? The Patriots were 29th in play calling of RPOs in 2019.

Expect to see more concepts from the air raid than in previous years. Belichick drafted Jimmy G and Jarrett Stidham with hopes of running more of those schemes. Newton doesn't have the accuracy one would want but has the mobility.

How the Patriots cover up Newton's 60% accuracy is going to be interesting. Expect teams regardless if they run a 3 or a 4 man front to spy Newton. Unless someone breaks out, the Patriots pass catchers can be played man to man. Leaving 5 guys who could still rush the Newton. The Patriots exposed their offensive line this camp, so 4 guys may be enough leaving a second guy who can float.

Well see how McDaniels prepares for 2020 in two weeks when the Patriots kickoff vs Miami.

Cam Newton misses closed camp.

The New England Patriots entered August with a quarterback competition. Then Jarrett Stidham got injured and Cam was able to pull ahead in snaps. Several writers have said Newton looked inaccurate and wasn't making throws on a regular basis.

On Monday Cam Newton had an excused absence. The reason why was unknown to the media. While the Patriots split the reps between the other three quarterbacks, it gave Stidham a day to catch up.

CBS Boston sports writers said this about Newton missing is, "What that means, exactly, remains anyone’s guess. But from the sounds of it, it does not appear to be an injury."

Belichick was asked again to name a starter and gave the media the run around. This could be Bill play a mind game or Bill may not have chosen one.

It is unclear if Newton will miss camp on Tuesday but Belichick stressed the importance of this week, which makes every snap Stidham took while Newton's away; that much more important.

This was the Patriots first closed session so the reporters were unable to give proper assessment of today's camp.

Articles become scarce as Patriots camp ends for the media, Cam showed improvement but still hasn't owned the position.

Sunday marked the last day for media at camp. I looked around noon and again around 430 PM sunday for stories to read and maybe write about. There were plenty of three day old stories, fluff and propaganda pieces but very little new info articles.

I came across an article by

When talking about the quarterbacks, one thing Shaw-Mellors made clear was that throughout camp, the defense owned it. So basically, take the offensive performance with a grain of salt and know that if someone stood out, they really stood out.

Shaw-Mellors wrote, "The QB race may not officially be over yet, but it seems it will have an anti-climatic ending." He said without Stidham's Injury was the only thing Newton did to prove he should be number one, also saying, "Cam Newton has taken the majority of camp reps without looking back." The Patriots just decided to go with Cam because he has more athletic upside, even though He has shown himself to be the less efficient passer.

Shaw-Mellors continued, "The QB room the team has right now is a great mix of experience, youth, and raw talent, don’t expect any to be leaving the roster next weekend.

Although the QB race is all but over, I still feel that all 3 QB’s will have a role to play this season, especially Brian Hoyer in a backup/mentor role to both Cam and Stidham."

There have been reports of a possible Hoyer for Josh Rosen trade. However, Hoyer is essentially another coach on the roster. That value there, along with his NFL experience makes that trade unfavorable for the Patriots.

As for Newton, he appears to continue to make improvements but he still has not shown that he is better than Stidham or that he has ran away with the job. Once the propaganda has been removed and we we see how the quarterbacks have faired, Newton has looked inconsistent this camp.

The Patriots have a week of camp coming up closed to the media. Things may change without eyes being able to report every flaw but with the preseason ending on September 6th, Newton has a lot to improve on in such a short time and the odds of some kind of quarterback platoon or even the Miami game being treated as a preseason game, is more and more likely.

Newton still has some fans worried about him taking over due to his lack luster preseason, hitting near rock bottom Thursday.

There are Patriots Fans who are stuck in either 2010 fresh off a Cam Newton Hiesman trophy win or in 2015 after Cam Newton won the MVP. There are fans optimistic about the potential of Cam that want to see what he has and then there are fans that are concerned because they saw and see him as an inconstant quarterback.

Cam Newton has had days where the only thing keeping his interceptions down in camp, was the fact he was throwing the ball so hard defenders couldn't hang on to the ball. On Thursday, he had under 50% competition percentage, going 13 of 28. Not impressive for a guy not only supposed to be the front runner but a guy trying to prove he still has it.

Mike Girardi said recently that none of the Patriots quarterbacks in his opinion are looking good enough to start. He said Stidham was looking like the most accurate but all three quarterbacks were inconsistent. Patsfans.com also wrote the same basic opinion, saying none were playing "well"

With Newton Giardi said that he knew Cam would have some issues but that there are passes that he should be completing that he's hitting with irregularity. Newton has been using too much power and he's been overthrowing and under throwning his targets. All things Newton had been reported to of fixed prior to coming to New England.

There's an old saying," walk like a duck, act like a duck, must be a duck." Gardi doesn't see a starter, Cam doesn't feel like a starter, thus he must not yet be a starter for the Patriots.

Stidham had an excuse for three days of bad play, he was injured, the Patriots admitted that and blamed his three day disappoint on not disclosing it. Newton is supposed to be 100% healthy. To make matters worse, there's how Evan Lazar described him recently.

"As we've seen time and time throughout Cam Newton's entire career accuracy, 7 on 7 drills and so on aren't his game. That running around, using his legs, using his arm strength that's really his cup of tea. That kinda skillset really wasn't amplified,  it was really the precision passing that we seen (in camp)," Said Lazar.

What myself and many fans Inferred from what Lazar is saying is that with Newton, the Patriots will be sacrificing Accuracy for scrambling ability and deep jump ball throws. Basically, the Patriots are hoping to duplicate Baltimore's 2019 or Washington's 2012 style offensive production, by having the quarterback the focal point of the run game.

This has Patriots fans worried. We gave Newton a chance. He didn't continue off with his 2018 accuracy of near 70%. He really didn't run away with this competition, he won it by default. Newton reverted back to his inconsistent ways. He can improve but he hasn't beat out Stidham yet, our fellow fans said there would be no competition; that Stidham wasn't in his league, it appears they were wrong.

Now the Patriots offense from everything I've learned about it is it's a combination of three offenses built for a more mobile quarterback but a mobile quarterback with accuracy not so much power. Whether it's dinking and dunking or lure defenders up by rolling out (with a mobile qb) just to throw a strike over their heads. They need a quarterback who can thread the needle down the seam. Newton is not showing he can constantly be that guy.

Newton has potential to be a good quarterback but one NFL analyst called him a 7-9 quarterback. With how he's performed this offseason, that's very well just as possible as him winning 11 games. With Stidham looking like he could do the same and is looking even with Newton according to many writers. Hoyer looking like he could at least win seven with this offense.

Fans have the right to be worried about Newton going into the season. He has not won us over, nor proved to the fan base that he is worth getting excited over the hype. Fans knew we weren't getting Tom Brady but we didn't expect a less accurate and more aggressive version of Tyrod Taylor.

The first few weeks could have a lot of infighting among Patriots Nation.

Annoyed with Patriots Media

The Goat and arguably the best and most injury prone pass catching tight end both signed with the Buccaneers this free agency period. That was supposed to be the end of them unless the Patriots played them.  Respect their contributions but they're gone. However, someone missed the memo.

From Clutch Points to CBS sports to the Flip app, you name it and you're sure to find at least one Buccaneers article that day from Patriots media sources. Sometimes you're lucky if you come across a Patriots article at all.

The Patriots do not play in Tampa Bay. Robert Kraft does not own the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers are not the six time superbowl champions. It is frustrating as a fan of the New England Patriots to go looking for news and content of the greatest team on earth, just to find a team that Hasn't been relevant since the Raiders had Tim Brown and Jerry Rice.

I try to avoid talking about the Buccaneers and their players unless it's needed in a Patriots article but the writers seem to be trying to lure away or annoy Patriots Nation with Tampa. Pretty sure majority of the Brady Bandwagon left. The Patriots are holding camp, surely they can find a story in New England. Patriots media is reserved for the Patriots and maybe our weekly opponent.

Hoyer for Rosen? One Patriots writer thinks so.

The Patriots have held a quarterback competition and although due to his injury Cam Newton was able to win the starting position by default due to limited practices, Jarrett Stidham has proved he could start and is looking more than capable being the team's back up.

Brian Hoyer signed with the Patriots with the chance to compete for the job. Somedays his accuracy was as bad as Cam Newton's, while other days it was as good as Stidham's. Hoyer is a great mentor and should be a future coach in the NFL.

Henry McKenna suggested that the Patriots make a trade in the coming days. McKenna throws out the idea of trading veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer for Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen Simon his second team since he was drafted and has done little to show he was not a draft bust. He's still young, so there's a chance it was poor coaching and that he can still be developed.

Rosen is 3 and 13 as a starter. He's thrown 502 passes, completing 54.8% of his passes for 2845 yards with 12 touchdowns and 19 Interceptions. Normally players with that many attempts are up around 4000 yards but his competition percentages says a lot. Rosen has been sacked 61 times in his career.

Incase you don't remember Rosen, I'll give you two different scouting reports on him.

Here's how Miami's Travis Wingfield scouted Rosen, "There are tools to work with, but he’s a long way away from being an effective NFL quarterback. The lack of niftiness in the pocket, the egregious decisions under pressure, and the unwarranted confidence to squeeze tight windows is going to make him a turnover machine early in his career."

Buffalo Rumblings writer Dan Lavole wrote, "In terms of the film, Rosen’s evaluation is practically a no-brainer. While he sometimes takes unnecessary risks with the football, and the right combination of pressure can force him into a sack, everything else about his game is mature and NFL-ready. Rosen has the athletic talent and processing speed to be an instant impact player in an NFL offense, and if he addresses his occasional lapses in precision and decision-making, his upside is tremendous."

His NFL comparisons from around the league, ranged from a potential Peyton Manning clone to a B-rated Sam Bradford. Huge difference. Huge, I don't get how scouting can vary that badly.

Both reports say he takes too many risks with his throws and his stats hold true to Wingfield's report that he takes too many sacks. Excuses can be made in his defense before I get crucified for circumstance. He's started but is his starting experience enough to compete with Stidham in 2021 and is he worth trading away Hoyer for?

Toronto has a Team Win.

The Blue Jays who have played three games less than division leaders The Ray's, still find themselves 4.5 games back.Good news however, the team played a complete game; beating Baltimore 5-0.

Walker had a strong day on the mound, pitching 6 while giving up four hits and three base on balls. Walker would strike out four without giving up a run. The Jays' relief staff was pretty solid as well, only giving up one hit.

Biggio, Hernandez and Guerrero were all pretty solid, each going two for four. The Blue Jays would have nine hits. The team who's been exiled to Buffalo, will host the Orioles again on Sunday as they look to try to climb out of third in the east.

Thuney Injury Watch

In 2019, Joe Thuney was the best and pretty much only high level performer on the offensive line, so the Patriots slapped that franchise tag on their left guard.

When Marcus Cannon opted out, Thuney volunteered to switch positions if needed. He also has been working out this camp as a back for center David Andrews who missed 2019 with Blood clots.

Thuney suffered an Injury the other day in camp. Mike Giardi tweeted this on the 28th.
"Joe Thuney has a heavy wrap on his hand from yesterday’s scrimmage. Jakobi Meyers is in a red, no contact jersey. Beau Allen sighting! #Patriots @nflnetwork"

We're not gonna worry about Meyers, the Patriots seem to have people stepping up but several writers Thursday said Thuney got up on his own with assistance from one of the trainers. Apparently not much is being said about the injury.

The Patriots have a habit of not talking about more serious injuries but down playing the less serious ones. There's not a great deal of time before the "preseason" ends on September 6th. The Patriots have been busy trying to figure out the right tackle and back up center.  The last thing they need is another hole on the offensive line.

Will Brian Cowart be The anchor of the defensive line?

In 2018, Danny Shelton was a nobody who the Patriots traded for, a 4-3  bust from Cleveland. In 2019 he signed a very team friendly deal and went on to become one of the best 3-4 defensive tackles in the NFL. This spring, Danny Shelton got paid.

The Patriots were tasked with finding a replacement and it looks like he was already on the roster. The Patriots former 2019 fifth rounder, who they selected with the 159th pick.

Bill Belichick referred to Brian Cowart as "explosive". Cowart is not just explosive, he's big and he's been dominating the Patriots offensive line. Cowart has been impressing coaches all year.

Now, Cowart's main competition has been Dedric Wise. Chris Mason wrote, "Wise has shown impressive improvement early in camp. He may be due for a breakout season." Which is always good news to about the former 2017 draft pick.

But back to Cowart, Patriots personal said they drafted him back in 2019 to help with run defense. However, he has been leading the way and making life very difficult for the Patriots quarterbacks, especially one Cam Newton.

Belichick was asked about Cowart and said this about his young defensive tackle. “I think he’s been primarily a run player throughout his career, when he was at Auburn and also when he  was at Maryland. I’m not saying he can’t rush the passer, but I’d say the pass rush is an area that he’s worked hard to develop and improve on because he hasn’t had as much experience or exposure with it, but he’s a very strong and physical player. I think he’s one of the most explosive players that we’ve had or do have.

But, really for him, it’s a lot about experience and technique and he made a ton of growth in the last 12 months here from where he was last year in training camp. That’s going to hopefully continue to ascend. His pass rush techniques have gotten much better. DeMarcus [Covington] and Joe Kim have both worked very hard with him on developing things that will work for him, not necessarily what another player does or doesn’t do, but really trying to utilize his strengths and skillset.”

Cowart has quietly developed and it's showing this camp with his standout performance. At no point did I ready anybody that had him listed higher than fourth on the Patriots depth chart prior to this camp.

Belichick continued, “I’d say his development in both areas has been significant, but he’s probably made more growth in the pass rush area, just because he didn’t do it as much (last year). He played a lot of four-technique at Maryland, which isn’t the most advantageous position to rush from, but he played it well — I’m not saying that. I’d say we have a little more variety and balance here than what he had in college, or even going back to Auburn.” (Auburn as of late is Belichick's new favorite school)

Cowart is showing he can be and is  an every down player. If he continues this, the Patriots can continue to get creative on both pass and rushing downs. Whether the Patriots use two lineman or five. The big key is can he stop big bodied  power running Backs. The Patriots still have time to bring in some no name runner to test the strength of the defensive line who had a hole in the center of their line, even with Shelton last season.

Toronto: Saved by the Bat

The Toronto Blue Jays had an unscheduled night off on Thursday as the Red Sox chose to protest. The Blue Jays were 4.5 games back, so the question was, would the extra day of rest hurt or help Toronto?

Friday would see the Blue Jays hit three home runs. Grichuk hit his 9th, Hernandez hit his 12th, and Vlad Jr would hit his 5th. Unfortunately, the team would only have eight hits and only two base on balls.

Ryu would have a strong outing pitching six full and striking out seven. He would give up eight hits and two base in balls with two runs. However, he was still in line for the win as the Jays started the seventh up bye one.

Romano would allow the Orioles to tie things up in the top of the eight. And Dollis would give up the lead run in the tenth. However, Toronto's bats would not allow the bullpen to blow it, as they kept the season alive by scoring two runs to end the game.

The Offense has looked dismal for a week due to the passing game, As Belichick continues to sacrifice Accuracy for Athleticism.

The Patriots practiced inside the stadium and simulated a game scrimmage. There were a couple of notable absences, mainly on defense but nothing that would hurt the team. In fact Cowart is looking like Danny Shelton's replacement.

The team would work in a few things. Ine maybe faking an injury for a free timeout. Something not allowed but happens. Hoyer was given praise for acting. The Patriots also worked on quick substitutions.

During the Drills, the Patriots gave Newton 6 reps while Hoyer and Stidham each ran one. NFL writers all pretty much said the same thing. It was another bad day for the offense. With Evan Lazar calling it "Shaky" at best.

This has been the constant theme since friday the 21st, when Newton started taking the lead amount of reps. The running game is still receiving praise but the passing game, although it has had a few bright spots has looked dismal.

On Thursday, Evan Lazar said accuracy and passing drills isn't Newton's game. That Newton is the quarterback to scramble around while waiting for a deep throw or running the football. The Patriots offense, even the playbook is modified for Newton, isn't built like that.

There have been reports all week that Newton has been putting too much power on all his throws, overthrowing pass catchers and yet still throwing too hard for defenders to hang on to the football. Hoyer has been what we know him to be, a conservative game manager.

Stidham has looked good all week on 7 on 7s being near perfect until Thursday, his first full day of reps where he was throwing wide in the rain and none of the quarterbacks were accurate. Stidham is healthy enough again and is the more accurate quarterback but Newton is the more athletic quarterback. Question is, how long will Belichick trade athleticism for accuracy?

Since It seems clear who the starter is and with how the offense is looking, some fans are praying the Patriots do indeed run a platoon at quarterback early on; so that Belichick can continue to decide the direction of the team. Is Newton's accuracy better than Stidham's running ability because fans are okay with a mobile quarterback but we want running ability and accuracy, not or.

Patriots plan to bring in another "Home Run" ball receiver.

Evan Lazar on Thursday described Cam Newton as an in accurate quarterback who is only good at running around and throwing the the deep jump ball. Something he was excited for but the Patriots are not built for.

The Patriots on Thursday cut speedy slot receiver Will Hastings from Auburn. Hastings ran a 4.45 but has been Injured and done nothing but take up a camp space.

According to Zack Cox and the NESN, the Patriots plan to replace Hastings with a faster slot Receiver in Andre Baccellia.

Cox wrote, "Listed at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, Baccellia reportedly ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at his unofficial pre-draft pro day. He caught 29 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns as a senior last season."

This move is to design the Patriots offense closer to a Cam Newton offense. Don't expect to see Cam Newton dinking and dinking, and moving the ball up field with an accurate passing game, occasionally hitting the home run.

The days of good quarterback play are potentially over for now. With Cam, expect to see him running all over the place, scrambling and overthrowing a lot of passes; looking to hit 30+ yard bombs several times a drive, while the receivers look as productive as his receivers did in Carolina.

Newton's style is to look for the home run ball on every play. Thus explains why the Patriots brought in Byrd, why they're hanging onto Thomas, and why they're planning to bring in Andre Baccellia.

Sanu is looking Slow and Sloppy, may not make Patriots Roster.

In 2019 Tom Brady pissed. Tom Brady moaned. The Patriots got tired of listening to a 42 year old throw a temper tantrum and traded a second round pick for Mohamed Sanu, to appease Brady like a two year old.

Sanu followed the same trajectory as former Patriots' receiver Danny Amendola, have a strong first game, get injured and do nothing else in your first season.

Sanu had surgery to repair damage that was caused from his injury and it was learned that Sanu played with a season ending High ankle sprain.

Sanu ran to Instagram posting videos of him training. Posted videos of him working out with newly signed quarterback Cam Newton, all in hope's to make people forget abhis 2019 season.

A recent video of Sanu was released from Patriots practice. Sanu looks slow and his route running looks unpolished. To make matters worse, he's dropping "routine" passes.

Sanu was let slide, as it's understandable that pain can be a distraction and knowing that he was playing with a season ending injury; fans forgave his drops. However, now he has no excuse.

Jerry Trotta wrote, "It hasn’t been all bad for Sanu during training camp, but we’re going to need to see a lot more from him to be convinced that he deserves the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Edelman."

Number two spot? At this point Harry, Ross, and Gunner Olszewski have all leap frogged Sanu. Sanu isn't fighting for the number two, he's fighting for a roster spot. Only thing saving him is Jakobi Meyers has a shoulder injury and is looking like an IR - PUP candidate.

Patriots Cut Injured Slot Receiver

On Friday, the New England Patriots cut undrafted free agent wide receiver Will Hastings out of Auburn for the second time this August.

By now everyone knows Hustings was referred to as Stidham's slot receiver, as the two had great chemistry in 2018, however Hastings was too injured to practice and never got to show his skills.

If you read my earlier stuff on Hastings, you know that Belichick has been scouting Hastings since high school, when Bill's friend and Hastings's coach asked Bill to.

Belichick would have Hastings come for a game and hang out in the locker room each year since. It was to the point that both Flores and and Matt Patrcia both went personally to Auburn to scout him at his pro day.

Hastings isn't just a speedy slot receiver, although running a 4.45 doesn't hurt. He's also an onside kick specialist, return man and potential gunner.

Hastings has the potential to clear waivers and revert back to the Patriots IR. However, it is unclear if the Patriots will keep him or cut him. The kid surely will make a team somewhere.

Evan Lazar Describes Cam Newton as a quarterback.

As Patriots fans, we're used to Tom Brady dinking and dunking up and down the football field from the pocket. Up until the last two seasons, quarterback accuracy was a staple in New England.

On Thursday, Evan Lazar of CLNS covered the Patriots camp. He was asked if the offensive struggle was on the defensive or offense and Lazar answered.

"As we've seen time and time throughout Cam Newton's entire career accuracy, 7 on 7 drills and so on aren't his game. That running around, using his legs, using his arm strength that's really his cup of tea. That kinda skillset really wasn't amplified,  it was really the precision passing that we seen."

Quick note, Newton threw under 50% competition on the day.

What Infer from what Lazar is saying is that with Newton, the Patriots will be sacrificing Accuracy for scrambling ability and deep jump ball throws. That's not the team New England is built to be. Only Byrd, Thomas, and Miller have that kind of speed.

Newton's skill set is more suited for the Chiefs' roster. That's probably why some of those receivers struggled in carolina. They all weren't deep jump ball receivers.

I have called Newton at his worst Hoyer with legs, Lazar makes it sound like that might be better than Newton. Hoyer can at least drink and dunk with accuracy, he's just too conservative.

If Newton is going to succeed here two things need to happen.

One which we know already is happening, McDaniels has to move plays forward in the playbook to cater to Newton's skill set.

Two, Newton is going to need to work on his pocket accuracy. Being able to the the deep ball is great, we've seen the entire AFC east get those quarterbacks over the past 20 years. Because they had shotty accuracy, the Patriots defense dominated those quarterbacks.

Newton is already known to be inconsistent and turnover prone. He's had several dropped interceptions. Belichick won't hesitate to pull him if Newton can't move the ball with his arm. The Patriots pass rush, which we know isn't stellar is already containing him. I doubt Bill is rushing more than 5 guys consistently.  If the Patriots pass rush can contain and sack Newton; with the Patriots schedule their opponents will too.

In 1985 it was musicians who took a stand, In 2020 it's our athletes. While the reasons for their fights maybe different, their goals are the same. Change The World.

Covid has effect student athletes, regardless of high school or college. For many of them, football is life. It keeps them out of trouble and gives them hope for a better life. For some it is the only difference between bagging groceries with a college degree to making six figures. So I have been pushing for college sports to resume.

I live in Rochester, NY.  While we don't have the number of shootings as Memphis, St. Louis, or Chicago, we have a fair amount.  It's to the point,  I know my political leaders are going to say it's too soon and instead of acting, they call for thoughts and prayers. So I'm like meh, when I see it in the news.

Now We've also had at least one questionable police shooting over the eight years over off of locus street. Some kid was arguing with his mom, police showed up and he was shot. Law enforcement's story was he had a real looking bb gun on him but the community said the shooting was unjustified.

Tonight I went to cover the Toronto Blue Jays versus the Boston Red Sox. Toronto still has playoff Hope's, while Boston is pretty much done. The Blue Jays talked and were willing to play but the Red Sox's felt the need to use their platform and protest.

Earlier in the day, I saw seven NFL teams had protested instead of working on training camp. The WMBA, the NBA, and even several MLB teams have refused to play or taken some kind of protests. New England Patriots players are speechless on what to say and unsure what to do in this time of crisis.

Now, I have been talking about how important sports is to civilization, how important competition is. That Rome knew without it people would up rise and turn on not only the government but each other.

I mentioned that if people thought society was angry and aggressive over the covid protocols and restrictions with masks and social distancing, where they were harming others, take away sports for an extended period and watch what happens when billions of people lose their form of stress relief (sports). That doesn't mean I don't support the athletes.

One thing that humanity forgets is that our entertainers are people too. They are citizens, and role models, Parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives. What happens in their neighborhoods, in their cities, states, and countries effects them also. They have a spotlight and the opportunity to help civilization in times of crisis. In fact one may say it's their duty.

Donald Trump said to get players off the field. Laura Ingraham said to shut up and dribble. People call the protests disrespect to our country and our flag. People turned their backs on sports as protests, social media groups have banned talking about it. They didn't want their players protesting for liberty and justice for all, because many of those who walked away don't believe in that kinda equality.

The players used their platform to bring these subjects to light. We have a duty to humanity to talk about them, to solve them. To those who walk away, you disgrace the team you once called yours. You disgrace your home town, your country and your flag. You disgrace the men and women who fought for that flag.

There are people who justify these shootings. They say, their parents should've taught them respect. Well if the officers' parents taught them respect, they wouldnt be harassing and killing civilians.

Then there's the excuse, well they should've cooperated. Sometimes cooperating means being caucasian.  There is need for better relationships  between police and their communities, I won't deny that. There are way too many scofflaws and anarchists but that doesn't give police the right to shoot someone in the back that they could've restrained. Jacob Blake should never of been shot.

There are those who call the black lives matter and antifa terrorists. There are some corrupt individuals hiding behind those groups but those groups message is pure. However most of the people who call these groups terrorists are okay with the KKK and neo nazis..

I have been stopped for walking through minority neighborhoods by police for being caucasian but I have never had the cops pull a gun on me. Too many minorities cannot say the same thing regardless of what neighborhood they walk in.

I have lived in New York my entire. I can tell you Rochester has a racial problem but I can tell you rural New York does too, especially Ontario and Wayne counties, areas I used to live in. But New York isn't alone, the bible belt still has sun down towns.

America and the world has issues with racism, including Israel which is supposed to be above world law according to the US Government. There is no place racism doesn't exist. Any where one goes, someone thinks they're superior to another.

We need conversations, we need actions instead of the constant thoughts and prayers that bring about more of the issues instead of less. We need to do what we can. Not everyone is gonna change. This will always be a problem.

Like Bill Belichick said you can implement all the policies and protocols but you cannot make someone believe it. The same is true about anything but doing nothing does more damage than making change.

The right wing calls civil and criminal justice reform and change, politically correct and cancel culture. Yes, racism and police corruption and brutality needs to end, it needs to no longer be tolerated, it needs to be canceled. Anyone can be the target of racism and prejudice but the African American people seem to suffer the most. The changes in the law and in society won't just benefit them, it will benefit everyone.

Our law makers need to step up, our leaders of faith need to stop hiding and step up. Especially those who make millions hiding in mega churches. Our citizens must step up and we must be willing to be educated and to unite. To look out for each other instead of being entitled and only worrying when it effects us or unless we can profit off of it.

Americans and the rest of the citizens around the world are self absorbed, we need more empathy, more humanity. We need a little globalism. The world did it for live aid,  as we came together to take care of hungry children around the world and in Africa. We need to do it again to end inequality, injustice and suffering of the population of the earth.

To the athletes leading the way thank you. To the officers who actually do their jobs, thank you, and to my fellow citizens, You are not alone. We have been praying for you but God does not help those who do not help themselves. So i hope this gets the attention of someone with the power to change things, so that we may do just that. This isn't just an American problem but a global one, so maybe it needs a global solution.

Click Bait Media trying to twist Stidham's Statement.

I was asked to cover this story after reports were coming out from multiple sources that Stidham still believes he could start. This was all based on his latest press conference. So I looked into it, looked at several articles and now I will answer the request.

When Tom Brady left, Jarrett Stidham was the frontrunner. Even with Hoyer on the roster. Stidham beat Hoyer out last season and expected to do it again. Newton was signed and Stidham walked into camp believing he could start. So now that Stidham is back from injury what does he think, is there still a competition and does he think he can start?

Stidham said "How I view things is everyday is a competition. Whether I'm first string, second string, third string, fourth string -- I don't view it as that. I just view it as a great opportunity to get better with my teammates every single day and compete really hard. I look at it as competing against myself, too, and trying to learn and grow every single day to help myself get better each day I go out on the field."

The media pushed on trying to create their narrative, wanting to know if he believes he'll start.

Stidham replied, “My goal, like I said earlier, has always stayed the same. Whether that be here at the end of training camp kind of leading into the season, or whether it be throughout the season, or whatever it may be, is really just to learn and get better. I’m only in my second year. There’s a ton of room for me to grow. A lot of room to improve and learn in a lot of different areas.

That’s kind of my big thing. I just want to continue to learn from the guys in the quarterback room, whether it be Cam (Newton), or (Brian Hoyer), or Jedd (Fisch), or Josh (McDaniels), or whoever it may be – just continue to learn from those guys and really try to help myself get better and really excel on the field every day.”

Look does Stidham believe he will start week one? He doesn't say that. Stidham did believe he could win the quarterback competition and he probably still does. However, if you listen to him; his goal is to get better. That's his desire.

The media, mainly Chat Sports, NBC, and USA Today are trying to twist what Stidham said to fill their narrative, even going as far as to combine it with Newton saying he "doesn't feel like the starter."

Every quarterback outside Lewerke Should have faith that they could walk into week 1 the starter. At the same time, they should be humble enough to self evaluate and know where they're at.

I wrote an article earlier. Apparently Mike Giardi doesn't think the quarterback play this August has been worthy of a starting job in New England. I wrote than that perhaps the media was trying to ignore or leave out everything in camp to sell their narrative.

With the case of still Stidham believing he can start, still believing he can win the competition; I do think Newton is leaving the door open to be challenged and we should want him to believe it. However, one can read what Stidham said, and what he says is "He's in competition, mainly with himself." That it. No where does he say anything about winning.

This narrative is click bait and those companies should be ashamed but that's how they get paid. You click on their link and stay long enough for their advertisers to be seen. Welcome to the 21st century.

Boomer Esiason Convinced Patriots' Jarrett Stidham Will Start Over Cam Newton in Week 1

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason spoke on his podcast or radio show about the Patriots quarterback competition. Boomer was a legend in Cincinnati before bouncing around the NFL during his twilight years. So he knows a little bit about what he's talking about.

Esiason knows all the accolades that Cam Newton has accomplished but thinks there's a reason why Bill Belichick hasn't called the quarterback competition. Boomer says the Patriots "will find a way to use him (Cam)" but he doesn't believe he will be the week one starter for the Patriots.

Esiason says that personal ability can only take Newton so far but it's the mental side that Newton will not have in time to start. That there's nuances that Cam doesn't know that will take time. Which is something Cam Eluded to on Wednesday.

Esiason said, "The one thing we know about Josh McDaniels up there in New England, this offense is about precision, and timing and understanding where everybody is on the field. I don’t care if you are a nine-year quarterback or a 10-year quarterback, it’s impossible to learn all of that and yet you are in the midst of a pandemic so you have no preseason games, very little practice time and you’re going to ask this guy to go out there and be your starting quarterback in Week 1? I just don’t see it.

Just because a guy can run faster or throw the ball farther doesn’t mean he knows where he needs to be and where he needs to get it to. Just because he’s a better athlete. There is a whole mental side of this for every quarterback to learn. I’m not just talking about Cam. I told you my first year I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately enough for me the first seven years in Cincinnati where I did play well I had the same offense every year. I had the ability to speak it, talk it, learn it and really understand what my coaches wanted. He’s learning now Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels.”

Boomer believes the Patriots will script ways to use Newton in the red zone and other areas. However, he believes Stidham will still be the starter week one. Esiason does not say that Stidham will hang on to the job, just that he will have it week one.

Liam McKeone of the big lead wrote, "As a former quarterback, Boomer's argument here makes a lot of sense. Individual ability can cover up a lot of flaws, but if Newton doesn't know the offense like the back of his hand by the time the season starts, New England might be more inclined to go with the guy who does and use Newton in Taysom Hill-type packages. As he notes, Newton doesn't have a lot of time to get acclimated with the pandemic limiting all preseason activities and Josh McDaniels is not really known for having an easy offense to pick up quickly."

Liam goes on to say that Cam Newton is getting more reps over the past several practices and infers that it must mean Newton is the starter.

While Cam has been getting more snaps, what Laim ignores is that Stidham has been limited due to injury. But let's continue.

Liam says that Stidham has been even with Newton and asks why would Belichick choose a 4th round quarterback over a first round quarterback.

The same question can be asked about why Bill would choose a first rounder over a fourth rounder if they're even.

Liam also talks about turnovers. Newton has reportedly had several dropped interceptions but Stidham has actually had them during the three day period before the team discovered his injury. The injury the team credited his interceptions to due to not being able to use proper throwing mechanics.

Liam says that Belichick isn't going to give a more accurate quarterback the job if he turns it over. That may be true but Bill is paying attention to dropped interceptions as well. Just because a defender fails to catch it, doesn't mean nothing at this point. In camp a dropped interception is still an interception.

Liam is clearly stuck in 2015, saying "Now, these are training camp stats. We can't read into them too much. Nobody knows what it'll look like on the field. But familiarity with the playbook will only get one so far. I don't doubt Boomer's assertion that it's extremely difficult to learn the playbook, but the Patriots do exactly what they need to in order to maximize their chances of winning that day. Whatever that might be, they do it. There's no universe in which Stidham gives them a better chance to do that than Newton, even if he has a firmer grasp on the playbook."

Against Miami in week one, Stidham may give the Patriots the best chance. Week two and week four maybe not; as Stidham is not ready for the Seahawks and Chiefs at this moment but completing less than 50 percent today, Newton isn't ready for week one yet.

Patriots Quarterback Issues Continue To Get Worse.

During Thursday's practice the Patriots quarterbacks got to play in the rain. None of the Patriots quarterbacks were looking good. Newton failed to complete 50% percent of his passes, even while having Edelman, Sanu, and Harry to throw to.

The quarterback reps broke down like this on Thursday. Cam Newton was 12 for 27, Jarrett Stdiham 7-of-14 and Brian Hoyer went 6-for-12. Stidham appears to be no longer limited and with Newton's accuracy issues, Stidham could see more reps if he can get back to his high accuracy performance.

The defense was getting their pass rush on and the secondary was staying with the pass catchers but the quarterbacks just weren't getting it done according to Tom Curran.

Curran wrote, "Cam Newton is still taking the heavy reps with the Patriots starters while Jarrett Stidham was next up followed by Brian Hoyer. None of them looked good and the defense reveled with every win."

It's understandable that the Patriots quarterbacks are going to have some lower competition percentages due to playing against this secondary unit. However, winning less than fifty percent of your battles is not what one wants from their projected starting quarterback. This is part of the reason why Newton has not been declared the starter yet.

Camp should continue on Friday providing players don't walk out in protest to the latest act of police brutality. Seven teams reported refused to practice on Thursday.

Stidham battles injury, adversity in Patriots quarterback battle

Kevin Flaherty of CBS Sports wrote what we all knew, that Stidham entered Camp the frontrunner but that due to his injury; Cam Newton surpassed him on the depth chart.

Stidham was intercepted seven times between the eighteenth and twentieth of August. Then it came out on that Thursday that Stidham had a lower body injury that occurred sometime Monday night due to over use from lack of stretching. Coaches believed that caused his accuracy issues. Stidham would see two days off basically before being limited in reps.

Flaherty admits Stidham is the more accurate passer saying, "68 is better than" the other two quarterbacks (62% & 60%). He also acknowledged that Stidham is back to the amount of reps he was getting before the injury.  "The second-year signal caller, who was New England's fourth-round draft pick in 2019, is now starting to get back in the flow."

With under two weeks left of camp, it's good and bad news. Newton should have a firm grip on the quarterbacks competition if you believe the stories being printed. Mike Giardi tweeted today, that things might not be as we've heard.

Stidham told reporters that he's just happy to be on the field and is taking things day by day. Which is the Patriots way.

Stidham went on to say, “My goal has always stayed the same. Whether that be here at the end of training camp kind of leading into the season, or whether it be throughout the season, whatever it may be, is really just to learn and get better. I’m only in my second year. There’s a ton of room for me to grow. A lot of room to improve and learn in a lot of different areas. That’s kind of my big thing. I just want to continue to learn from the guys in the quarterback room, whether it be Cam, or Hoy, or Jedd [Fisch], or Josh [McDaniels], or whoever it may be – just continue to learn from those guys and really try to help myself get better and really excel on the field every day.”

It almost sounds like Stidham may have accepted the fact that he is going to be the backup this season. While it's good that he can humble himself, during a competition; that should never be a thought in his mind. The good news is Stidham is healthy and has time to further his development in the Patriots system.

Giardi Says Patriots Quarterbacks Aren't Having The Great Camp Being Reported.

Michael Giardi tweeted on Thursday about the Patriots quarterbacks to the dismay of the Patriots nation. Giardi gave what may be the most honest take on the Patriots quarterback competition and it contradicts almost every story about the quarterback competition.

Giardi tweeted, "Back to football: #Patriots still have 3 QBs who aren't playing like they're the solution. Newton's confidence is growing but it's still moving too fast for him once the ball is snapped. Stidham throws it better than the other 2 but he missed time and his accuracy still spotty."

Hoyer has been consistently a game manager. His accuracy is only around 60%. His big plays are gonna be few and in between and he's only gonna do just enough.

Newton admitted he's not playing like a starter and has a lot to learn. He's throwing the ball too hard and overthrowing pass catchers. Newton is completing between 58% to 70% of his passes on any given day.

Stidham's been accurate Tuesday and Wednesday but that was during the 7 on 7s. He's fluctuating between 60% to 80% completion percentage this camp. The fact that his throwing Mechanics are off due to injury isn't helping his cause.

Giardi continued "The lack of consistency is a little...I dunno...concerning? I didn't expect assimilation would be easy. Hell, far from it, but there are throws to be made that aren't being made with regularity."

The quarterbacks are playing against some of the best secondary players in the NFL but these quarterbacks are also getting beat by linebackers. Hoyer especially in this system should be able to beat linebackers who have dropped into coverage. Giardi is basically saying none of the quarterbacks are looking ready to start in the NFL.

Giardi with, "And yes, I’ve reminded people a number of times that one of Cam’s greatest gifts is his speed/size/power combo platter and we don’t get to see on full display bc no one is trying to tackle him.  But he got flushed a few times today and the end results with incompletions."

That's the thing, if Cam cannot it targets while throwing on the run, while men aren't chasing him but leaving him open targets, what's gonna happen when he's got guys coming for him? Newton and Hoyer have been saved this camp by drops from the defense.

Fans questioned Giardi about the Patriots coaches praising Newton. Especially Fisch who said that after for weeks Cam can run the offense. Giardi responded "What did you expect the QB coach to say?"

The same thing that the anti Stidham crowd said about the coaches and players praising him. However, it only makes sense, the coaches would say be the same way publicly with Cam.

Fans are also blaming the receivers but every other day we hear how good the pass catchers are looking. So like with Cam, It could be reporters telling fans what they want to hear or the receivers have actually developed and improved. We honestly don't know.

Look as much as fans want Patriots quarterbacks or just a specific quarterback to do good for the bandwagoners, we have to hold them accountable. While the media's job is to report what they see, sometimes it can be a little biased and they can ignore some of the negative to fit their narratives. So take everything with a grain of salt.

McDaniels could leave at anytime and fears of Nepotism could see the only other coach with potential to replace Bill Belichick lured from the Patriots organization.

Steven Belichick has been with the Patriots since 2012 and since then he worked his way up the ranks. Having to work harder than everyone else because Bill expected more from him due to his last name.

In 2016 Steven was promoted to safeties coach and had them a top 5 unit. In 2019, He took over as secondaries coach and turned the defensive backfield into the most elite group in the NFL.

He also split playcalling duties with former Patriots middle linebacker and middle linebacker Coach Jarod Mayo. Together, the two created one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history.

In the spring I wrote an article about how Steven had earned his stripes to take over the Defensive Coordinator Job and that if he continues to improve, he could be in line to replace his father.

I also talked about how people were saying it's nepotism for Steven Belichick to get promoted in the system. How he should go elsewhere and start from the bottom and earn his stripes.

Year after year fans see coaches leave to take positions on other teams. Some have success and some not so much. Belichick is constantly having to replace staff members. This year he promoted his son Brian Belichick to safeties coach and moved Steven to outside linebacker's coach.

Why, because every team wants to not only hurt the Patriots but to be the Patriots. They want the success that Belichick has brought and hope that one of his coaches figured out Belichick's secret to success. So they constantly lure away coaches from the Patriots for promotions and money. Don't think the players are the only ones who leave New England to get paid, the coaches do it too.

USA Today's Doug Farrar talked a little about Steven Belichick and why he was moved. "Moving to coach the outside linebackers in 2020 is an example of what Bill Belichick has always asked his assistants to do — get as much experience as possible at as many positions as possible so you’re not overwhelmed when you get a head coaching opportunity. Perhaps the younger Belichick is the one to buck the trend of Patriots assistant failure."

Now while some Patriots fans want him to go, call it nepotism or say he'll be living in his father's shadow, Everyone knows after 3 or 4 years after replacing a coach, everything falls on to the current coach as it is their team at that point. Steven Belichick is now on the list of Head Coaching candidates, which should remain there if he continues to have success.

Let me say that again, teams are considering Steven Belichick for a head coaching job. To everyone who doesn't think he's earned his way, if other organizations felt that way; they wouldn't want him as their head coach. Think about that, the Patriots currently have two potential head coaches on the staff.

We all saw what Josh McDaniels can do in Denver. McDaniels has been entertaining coaching jobs. He almost took the Indy job, an analytics department kept him from accepting the job in Cleveland. Another offer is going to come his way and he could accept it and it could come after Steven leaves.

Ask yourself this, would you really see a person qualified for the position leave, when the frontrunner for to replace Belichick has repeatedly considered leaving and has left once before?

It doesn't make sense for the Patriots not to do everything they can to keep him around and as fans, we should want him around as an insurance policy until Bill steps down and his replacement is named.

Blue Jays beat Bo-Sox 9-1, still 4.5 games back.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, the Toronto Blue Jays found themselves in a good spot as they were only 2.5 games back of the division behind the Ray's. A lot has changed, as by the end of Wednesday night, they were 4.5 games back.

Shun Yamaguchi took the mound for the Blue Jays and gave them four solid innings, only giving up a run as he picked up the W. On 2 hits and two base on balls, while striking out a pair of soxs. The rest of the staff would only allow 1 hit and 1 base on balls.

Grichuk, Tellez, Guerrero, and Espinal would all have good days at the plate, with two hits each. Hernandez, Gurriel, and Espinal would all find bases via walks. While Tellez would hit two homers and Grichuk would also send one to the bleachers.

All in all, the Blue Jays picked up 9 runs on 11 hits to score the victory. The Jays are 15-14, 4.5 games back. The club is barely holding on to the last wildcard spot. Not to sound like a broken record but the Blue Jays control their own destiny.

Once the post season starts, anything can happen. 20 years from now, nobody's going to care about an asterisk next to their world series title. The team has one goal this year, "Win this one for Tony."

The Incredible Folk returns to the Patriots, as Rohrwasser struggles.

When the Patriots decided on a kicker this season, they passed on rookies Johnathan Song, Rodrigo Blankenship, and Sam Sloman for a kicker who was accurate maybe 80% of the time outside the five yard line.

The Patriots drafted Justin Rohrwasser to replace Stephen Gostkowski. Although Rohrwasser has the leg to kick the long ball, he doesn't have the accuracy. Not sure how the Patriots botched this scouting. Rohrwasser has been called erratic, with one reporter saying when he's on, he's on but when he's not the ball could be kicked out the corner of the endzone.

That's great when talking about kickoffs, horrible when one realizes they're talking about his field goal accuracy.

Coach Belichick said,  “I think both players are good kickers,” Belichick said. “We’ll see how it goes. That’ll be up to them to decide. … Those two guys will both get as much opportunity as we can give them, and we’ll evaluate them and go from there.”

Of course he's going to say that. Does one really expect Bill to be like "we messed up the evaluation process on this kid during our scouting." Of course not.

Bill went on to say, "We’ve talked to Nick throughout the course of the spring and even training camp, and things worked out here last week. It’s great to have him. He certainly came in and did a good job for us last year. But things just didn’t work out until recently with Nick. I’m glad they did. I’m glad he’s here, and we’ll see how it turns out. I don’t know.

But we’ve been talking to Nick since back in March, so this isn’t something that just came up a couple days ago. It’s been an ongoing conversation for several months, actually.”

Folk is already making field goals which doesn't bode well for Rohrwasser who was two for three on the day, Wednesday. If Rohrwasser doesn't win the spot, there's a good chance he'll make the practice squad as very few teams are going to claim an inaccurate kicker.

2019 undrafted Division II corner back might be the replacement for Edelman, who replaced Welker.

2019 undrafted free agent Gunner Olszewski could play in all three phases. The Patriots were going to cut the young wideout but realized he would not make it to the practice squad. Gunner was pretty much invisible due to Tom Brady. Although, he did keep a 9 yard punt return average.

Gunner has done a lot to his physique to improve this season. The young gun looks like a totally new player and has been doing nothing but making highlight reel plays. Olszewski might end up being the new "seven eleven".

Doug Kyed wrote, "Despite facing such steep competition, Olszewski has looked like one of the Patriots’ best wide receivers this training camp. He was viewed as a longshot this offseason before outperforming players like Jakobi Meyers and Damiere Byrd in practices."

Another name Kyed could mention is Sanu. Sanu has been invisible this camp after posting Instagram videos of how much better in shape he was. Instead of Sanu, it's almost all Gunner, with flashes of Ross, Byrd, and Harry mixed in.

Defensive player of the year and the best corner in the NFL Stephon Gilmore had something to say about Olszewski.

Gilmore was quoted as saying, “He’s definitely gotten better. I think he’s gotten stronger, gotten quicker. The longer you’re in that offense the better, so he has definitely taken a step from last year. Competing against him, you know he’s going to go hard every snap. That’s one thing about him, he’s very fearless, he doesn’t care. That’s the way you have to be to be a good receiver in this league.”

Fearless, willing to throw your body on the line for the team. That is a critical part of being a Patriots slot receiver. We saw it with Wes Welker, We saw it with Amendola, We continue to see it with Edelman, and now it appears we're going to see it with Gunner Olszewski.

Everyone has been wondering who's gonna replace Edelman, well we may have our answer.

Patriots open the flood gates for a raging Rivers

Derek Rivers has had a decent camp this season. One of the last surviving members from the 2017 draft class. With the loss of the Patriots linebackers, the team has been forced to develop depth guys. To which Rivers has benefited from thus far.

Over the past two seasons, with Injuries and the talent on the roster, Rivers has been buried on the team's depth chart. Only seeing the field littleniver 12% of the time he's been a Patriot.

According to Phil Perry Rivers has been one of the better linebackers in camp this year for the Patriots.

Perry isn't alone as NESN's Zack Cox is also singing the praises of the linebacker about to enter his fourth season. Cox wrote, "Rivers has been a bright spot in New England’s outside linebacker battle through the team’s first nine open practices."

Rivers needs to do everything he can this season to prove his worth. To say his last three seasons have been uninspiring would be an understatement. Prior to this camp, he would be questionable even as a practice squad member.

Coach Belichick said about Rivers, "He's had a very good camp and really is playing with a lot of confidence. He's gained a lot of strength and explosiveness, as well as rehabbing the injury . . . His overall body composition, strength, power is good."

The question for Rivers has never been his physical ability but making mental mistakes that cost the Patriots. Too often he's called on a penalty. Hopefully, Steven Belichick can fix what his predecessor couldn't with Rivers but so far Derek is looking like a new player.

Patriots training camp: Cam Newton, Pats bog down in two-minute offense

Cam Newton has been putting in the work and getting the playbook down. He admits there are areas he needs to work on. That he can make some changes at the line but he's still learning it all.

Newton's accuracy has been an issue so far. Somedays he's up, other days not so much. On Wednesday, there was a period where Newton was overthrowing his pass catchers and if he wasn't throwing so hard, he would've had several interceptions but the defenders could only hang on to one.

His inaccurate and rifle arm are two reasons that people wanted him to earn his spot. It's great that he's throwing the ball so hard that defenders cannot catch it but it's bad that he's throwing it so hard it's going past his guys. Newton also has given some concern with ball security, as he was mad to run a lap the other day after a fumble.

Phil Perry of NBC said although Newton's show progress he's got some way to go. Perry wrote about Newton, "(He's) far from perfect. That's been evident over the course of the last few days as the Patriots have held multiple two-minute drill practice periods. It's in those moments when things have looked chaotic for Newton and the Patriots. It's in those moments the execution has been lacking."

Over the last three days during the hurry up drills, Newton has gone 10 of 23. He's been sacked 5 times, thrown 1 interception, had several near interceptions (blame the defense), and shown he's has accuracy issues. Especially when being hurried.

Newton admits he made mental mistakes and he still has room for improvement. That Hoyer and Stidham have better command over the offense. Which is good to see him admit, while his fans ignore his flaws and the media has crowned him the starter.

Hoyer may have better command but like Newton, the only thing keeping Hoyer's interceptions down are defensive drops. Something Belichick will have to correct, as that was part of what made the 2019 team so special.

Don't think I'm gonna let Stidham off. The second year quarterback. While Stidham has been accurate as he recovers, being near perfect the past two days and keeping his completion percentage above 72% this camp; he has frustrated the team.

Stidham's accuracy dipped from the 18th to the 20th because Stidham hid an injury from the team that he suffered on the 17th. Over those three days, Stidham could not properly plant his leg or use good throwing mechanics. Due to that, Stidham has changed the course of this competition.

For the people who ended the competition before it started and already declared Newton the starter, Henry McKenna said this about Stidham. "That doesn’t mean that acknowledging Stidham’s relevance is wrong. His odds are getting worse. But he’s not out yet.”

Thanks to Stidham, Newton is getting a lot more reps and while Newton is doing enough to be the frontrunner, he's also making enough mistakes to keep it a competition. As long as Newton struggles in the areas he is and Stidham continues to improve and heal, this competition will continue.

Chris Cwilk of Yahoo sports wrote, Stidham’s injury opens the door for Cam Newton to take over as the team’s starter. That always felt like the most probable outcome considering Newton’s status as a former MVP, but a rumor emerged that the team could utilize a two-quarterback platoon in 2020."

Evan Lazar of CLNS, also weighted in and I kinda agree with him. "The starting job competition is likely over, but Stidham could make things interesting if he gets back to full-speed drills."

Newton maybe the frontrunner but as Jerry Glanville used to say, "You know what NFL stands for? Not for long, that's what!" One should not be surprised if the competition lasts until the last day of camp on the 6th of September. There's a lot of time left and in the NFL anything can happen.

Harris and Taylor Have Helped Make The Running Depth Chart a Competition

While Sony Michel and Lamar Miller were sitting out 2019 third round pick Damien Harris and 2020 undrafted free agent JJ Taylor were turning heads. Michel came off the PUP but the damage has already been done.

Harris was considered one of the better backs in the 2019 NFL draft and when the Patriots grabbed him, It was labeled as a steal the draft. Unfortunately for Harris, he didn't see much time his rookie year. Harris is a north and south style powerhouse.

This preseason however, things are looking quite different. Here's what Belichick had to say about Harris. “He’s a smart player and he has a lot of skills that I think we’ll be able to utilize. He’s had an opportunity to get quite a few reps here in the work that we’ve done to this point, so I think that’s helped him, but he seems like he’s in good shape and ready to go. Looking forward to seeing him.”

Harris is trying to stay in game shape and making sure he's completely familiar with the playbook incase the opportunity arrives for him to take the field.

One of Harris's former coaches Mike Locksley had this to say about Harris. “He’s an every-down back. He can protect the quarterback, run the ball. He catches the ball out of the backfield a lot better than some might have thought. I found out very quickly that was part of Damien’s skill set.”

Pretty much everything they can get out of Miller or Bolden he can do. Which is going to make this competition very interesting.

Taylor went undrafted out of Arizona due to his size. Although Darren Sproles who is the same build and body type as Taylor, had a successful career; many that small are never given a chance.

Running backs coach Ivan Fears recently spoke about Taylor and he had high praise for the young running back. He clearly sees a dangerous weapon potential in Taylor. Fears said Taylor is working extremely hard this camp and compared him to Dion Lewis.

Fears said, "Same quickness, same suddenness. He’s a hell of a pass-catcher. Guy’s got great vision. There’s a [expletive] load of stuff that’s good about him. He’s got to learn to play bigger than his size."

Taylor's been making the most his time in camp catching passes and taking handoffs. Taylor is also one of the people fighting for a spot as a return specialist, so if he doesn't make the roster one way, he can make it another.

Taylor's best used on counters, tosses, misdirections and sweeps. Along of course with catching passes on wheel routes and flats. He's also got the ability to line up outside in the slot, kinda like the Patriots do with James White and Rex Burkhead on occasion.

Fears noted somethings about Taylor that he has to overcome. "First it’s being a rookie. Second, everybody has some physical deficiencies they’ve got to handle, and his size is something that he can handle and he has to deal with when he’s playing. With a first-year player coming in, there’s a lot of things he’s got to learn and a lot of things that he’s got to do better."

He's already showing he can do that. Taylor's not looking to be a feature back this year, so if he can crack the roster; he'll have plenty of time to develop.

With both Taylor and Harris turning heads, Now that Michel is back, he's going to have to play lights out and show development in the passing game. Of all the backs on the roster, Michel seems to be the only one that has issues in that area. Now that Brady is gone, he no longer has that excuse. Taylor and Harris could cause a drastic change to the amount of reps last year's core backs saw.

Humbled Newton Refuses To Declare Himself The Patriots Starter.

For weeks Bill Belichick has said that he would have a quarterback competition. Bill even came out and named both Stidham and Newton co-starters before Stidham mysteriously suffered a lower body injury from lack of stretching and overuse. Which gave Newton more reps.

At Wednesday's press conference, the media tried to get Cam Newton to declare himself the starting quarterback. Newton was humble and did not fall into the media's trap.

Newton admitted there were areas where he was behind both Stidham and Hoyer. Areas the media is over looking as they try to portray their story. So when reporters questions basically insisted that Newton was the starter, Newton responded.

"Absolutely not, Every day is a workday for me. That label is not important to me right now because I know I have so much that I need to get better at, so much I need to learn, so much that I need to comfortable with. Throughout this process, that's the last thing that I'm pretty much worried about, knowing that there are certain things when I come to the line of scrimmage and it's just not as firing mentally as I would want it to be rather than other plays that may be called.

I see a person like [Brian Hoyer] go to the line and he's just as sharp as it could be. From me asking him questions and him answering them, and [Jarrett Stidham], and things like that, there are things I know I need to become better at. Until I get those things done, everything else is irrelevant."

So while Newton maybe getting more reps and having fun with Edelman while Stidham is limited, he knows there are things a starter should be fluent with that he is not. Belichick praised Newton for his progress, as he has been doing with all the quarterbacks this camp.

In Belichick's statement he said, "Specifically for Cam, he's worked very hard, picked things up well. Of course, Stid [Jarrett Stidham] and Brian [Hoyer] have a little more experience in the system. Cam obviously has more playing experience. So, we'll see how all that plays out, but I think we're ready to, I would say, move forward from an execution standpoint. As I said, schematically, we're far enough along here where we have plenty of football in to play a game and to play in everything but maybe a couple of the last play of the game type of situations. But other than that, we have a lot to play with. We'll just have to see how well we can perform and perform against the competitive situation on the other side of the ball with our defense and vice versa."

Now while Cam doesn't have the experience in the Patriots system, that takes time. No different then gaining game experience. Two things that can easily be acquired as the weeks go on. Which gives Newton a slight advantage because eight plus seasons of game experience is better than one year of system experience.

Newton didn't have a great day in practice on Wednesday, although it got better according to several writers. He apparently had several dropped interceptions to go with his one on the day and if not for defensive drops, he could looking at double digit interceptions at this point in camp. Something Newton will have to work on.

As far as the quarterbacks competition, Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports wrote, "New England will open up the regular season against the Dolphins on Sept. 13 at Gillette Stadium, giving Belichick a bit more time to evaluate each of these quarterbacks. At some point soon, however, the pendulum will need to swing from a quarterback competition to getting one of those signal-callers ready for Week 1. As things stand currently, Newton appears to be the favorite to be QB1 when they officially begin the 2020 season."

Newton is the frontrunner runner and it's press conferences like today that are going to help win the respect of Patriots fans. He will still need to prove it on the football field. The Patriots take on the Chiefs and Seahawks in their first four weeks. Which Cam will have a chance to prove he's the man. For now kudos to him.

Sony Michel is off the PUP with something to prove

Sony Michel underwent the knife after the season to relieve some pressure in his foot. Thus causing Michel to miss most of August's training camp.

In Michel's absence 2019 third round pick Damien Harris and undrafted free agent JJ Taylor have put on a show, with Harris's name being talked about as the possible number one.

Sony Michel was removed from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday. One must thing he was feeling pressured and pushing for this. Several writers have said Michel looked really good, 2018 good. One writer saying "He looked explosive and smooth in his cuts."

Ian Rapoport said this morning, "I was told this is a relatively minor procedure and the fact that he's out there with plenty of time to get ready for the season is a very good sign for New England's starting quarterback."

With Damien Harris doing so well and Lamar Miller now on the roster, Michel must pick up the passing game. Having two backs proven in that area, that can steal his job is not a thing he can take lightly.

Michel has moved into 21st on the Patriots all time rushing leaders, dispite all the injuries, offensive penalties, and Marshall Newhouse making it impossible to run to the left side of the field in 2019.

Sam Marsdale of CBS Sports wrote, "Last season, Michel rushed for 70 or more yards in eight games. He found momentum down the stretch with 259 rushing yards in the final three games of the season."

Over the offseason, there has been a lot of talk that Michel cannot shred tackles. Everyone knows that the entire offensive line play with exception to Joe thuney, was down. Even the tight ends weren't blocking well. But nobody mentions that Michel had such a good stretch of games.

Belichick praised Michel's ability and development and said he just doesn't focus on one game or one play. That it's a case to case basis.

Bill also said, “We’ve talked to him a lot about what his keys are, what his reads are, what the progression of the reads are. You don’t just look at one guy after you get past that guy. After you deal with that particular block or that particular defender, you’ve got somebody else to deal with. We’ve talked a lot about that, and I think he’s improved a lot.”

Now that Michel is off the pup, business is about to pick up. Expect to see him going balls to the walls to put the spotlight on him as Harris and Taylor have given reason for Sony to be on the field less.  The Patriots have less than three weeks before they kick off against Miami.
