A burger and conversation that could help change America.

Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson made some comments that got him into some trouble. Jackson later apologized but his comments are still not going over well. Patriots wideout Julian Edelman addressed these comments, starting by saying he respected Jackson.

Edelman said on his Instagram, "“I got nothing but respect for his game. I know he said some ugly things but I do see an opportunity to have a conversation. I’m proud of my Jewish heritage. For me, it’s about community and culture as well. I’m unusual because I didn’t identify as Jewish until later in my life. Whenever I encountered hatred, it never really felt like it was aimed at me. It was only after I was part of this community that I learned how destructive hate is. Anti-semitism is one of the oldest forms of hatred. It is rooted in ignorance and fear.”

Mike Greger of heavy.com wrote, "Edelman went on to describe being targeted during the 2011 NFL season when an unnamed player called him a “kike” (ethnic slur for a Jewish person) on the football field. The Super Bowl champion compared anti-Semitism to racism against the black community, adding that he felt it was important to “stay behind” the Black Lives Matter movement. Both communities have been “attacked by the ignorant and hateful.”

Edelman said there was opportunity for conversation and learning. He invited Jackson to have lunch and to spend a day visiting museums of both their histories. Edelman was sending an olive branch to Jackson while many are attacking him.

While Jackson has reached out for sensitivity training, taking Edelman up on his offer can go far for both the African and Jewish American communities. Philidalphia and New England have had large roles in shaping our country. How fitting would it be if to members from these two areas continued that tradition of uniting to make America a better place.

Update at 0800 on July 10,2020, Julian Edelman and DeSean Jackson have talked and have plans for future engagements
