DJ Siddiqi of Clutch Points wrote an article "Update on Patriots' interest in recently released TE Trey Burton"
The Bears cut Burton to save one million in cap space. However, they will still be on the hook for four million in guaranteed money. And right now It's the fans, not the Patriots organization, that currently wants Burton, mainly because of the "Philly Special", many probably never heard of him before Superbowl 52.
DJ Siddiqi said "According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Patriots are not likely to sign the former Chicago Bears tight end. Burton was released by Chicago on Friday afternoon."
“There’s been some local fan interest in free agent tight end Trey Burton, who was just released by the Bears. But at the moment, it looks like a long shot that Burton would wind up with the Patriots, per source.” - Jeff Howe
Burton's lack of production was supposedly due to injury, as he was productive the season prior. A healthy Burton will be just as productive as he was prior to injury. Atleast that's what Siddiqi would have us believe. "In 16 starts in 2018, Burton caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six touchdowns." Says DJ Siddiqi.
The Patriots are down to two players with unproductive seasons in 2019 at the position and that is expecting to change via the draft.
Siddiqi says "Burton remains in the thick of his prime at just 28 years of age". With that he should remain a low cost option for 2020, if the Patriots are unable to fill team needs via the draft, and should be an upgrade at the position if healthy.
