Patriots Draft Results Love It Or Hate It.

The Patriots 2023 Draft is in the books. It looked like the team was building like they were set. However, that was short lived. And although they drafted a kicker and punter, they really didn't Draft for the future. I would say the Patriots drafted to win now. Here's their draft picks.

CB Christian Gonzalez (1)
DE Keion White (2)
LB/S Marte Mapu (3)
C Jake Andrews (4)
K Chad Ryland (4)
G Sidy Sow (4)
G Atonio Mafi (5)
WR Kayshon Boutte (6)
P Bryce Baringer (6)
WR Demario Douglas (6)
CB Ameer Speed (6)
CB Isaiah Bolden (7)

Gonzalez give the Patriots a shutdown corner but they failed to get a free safety. Boutte is a high risk high reward Z receiver and Douglas is a typical slot.

The Patriots failed to get a tackle or developmental tight end. And over drafted corner and interior offensive linemen. Unless they drafted one of those guys to play Tackle and another to play Corner, the draft doesn't make a lot of sense.

We'll have to wait and see what moves the Patriots make when the draft finishes but for now, I'd give this draft a B-.

82 Patriots Prospects Remaining From My 125 Prospect Patriots Big Board.

Here is a realistic list of 82 remaining draft prospects the Patriots could target on day 3 that would fit with their system. Many of these guys should've gone in the top 102 picks of the draft. There are a few starters remaining. Each prospect has 2 draft reports. Only 35 of these guys are left from my smaller and final board.

Day three the past five years has been kind to my boards. I came into this draft with the Patriots taking 64.6% of their picks from my final draft board. I came close on the first two days but not close enough as guys didn't make my cut and Washington took the wrong corner.

Day One In The Books And Plenty Of Fits Still Available For The Patriots.

Day one is in the books. It's always nice when a player comes off my second to last draft board but Washington messed up my day one. Although, I can live with it. Who thought Gonzo was falling to 14, let alone 17? There are still plenty of prospects that fit the Patriots needs left, as only 5 from my 56 prospect Draft board were taken.

Patriots Trade Back From 14 To Get What Was Supposed To Be The Best Cornerback In The 2023 Draft.

Yes, you read that headline right. Round one of the 2023 NFL Draft is in the books. Fans awaited to see who the Patriots would take at pick 14. The answer was nobody, as the Patriots would make fans have to wait by trading back as many expected they would.

The Patriots traded the 14th pick in the 2023 draft to the Steelers for the 17th and 120th picks. The Patriots gave the Pittsburgh a discount as they could've asked for a 2024 fourth or fifth round pick to recoup the full value of the 14th pick.

The Patriots clearly needed a number one Perimeter corner. At pick 14, the team had their choice of Joey Porter Jr who went undrafted in round one, Emmanuel Forbes, Christian Gonzalez, and Deonte Banks. By trading back, it was clear the Patriots didn't care which of them they got.

By trading back I do believe that had Washington taken Gonzalez instead of Forbes, that the Patriots would've taken Forbes but instead the Commanders showed that Gonzalez wasn't seen by all as the best or second best cornerback in the draft, as Witherspoon was already drafted. And the Patriots took Gonzalez one pick after the Commanders.

Gonzalez, a 20 year old Prototype corner with room for improvement. Some suggest he could use more weight. He's a true corner that deters throws outside or in the slot, that's also not a liability against the run. And he can help prevent those pesky kickers from putting up points as well.

The former four star prospect played in and started 30 games. He had 4 interceptions, 129 tackles, 21 passes defended and one blocked kick. Some of those stats came from Colorado, a smaller D1 school.

While most NFL media agreed that he is a day one starter, some graded him as a CB2. That could explain why the Commanders took Emmanuel Forbes ahead of Gonzalez. All I wanna say is thank you Washington for screwing up draft boards, this is one many can live with.

Now, many thought the Patriots were handling the offseason like they were set with their roster. So far the Patriots have made the first move towards proving that in this draft. If the Patriots are in that mindset, they will acquire a tackle, safety and tight end that are at least projected developmental starters before the draft is over.

The other positions like receiver, edge defender, interior offensive lineman, receiving back and punter are all optional at the moment because we don't know what they're plan is with the guys on the roster. Although I'd still like to see a true speedy perimeter receiver (David Durden, fingers crossed) added. Thanks to that day one trade, the Patriots are still in the sweet spot with 11 picks over the next six rounds.

Rodgers Doesn't Not Elevate The Jets To Second In The AFC East

Is Aaron Rodgers going to make the difference for the Jets. There's two things to go off of film and stats. I'm not gonna look at film. Now when it comes to stats, people say put an asterisks next to 2020 sports stats. Let's see if there's reason to think Rodgers is going to make a huge difference or not.

Health wise Rodgers hasn't missed an NFL game in 3 seasons. We know he has past injury concerns. I'm only looking at his past 3 years of stats, while he's been healthy, his stats don't excalty help him over that span.

Over the past 3 seasons his completion percentage has been 70.7, 68.9 and 64.6%. Thus involves things outside his control.

From a clean pocket 79.2, 74.3 and 67.4%,

His pressure completion percentages 43.1, 39.8 and 42.9

Lastly, his true completion percentage 78.3, 73.9 and 69.6

His touchdown percentages over that span are 9.1, 7 and 4.8%.

His interception percentages 1, .8 and 2.2%

His true accuracy rating according to player profiler 7.8 (13th), 7.8 (12th)

Catchall pass rate, 80.8, 79.1, 69%

QBR 85.4, 69.1 and 39.4

His protection rates, how well green bay kept him safe... 88.1, 88.9 and 85.5. So his stats weren't because he wasn't being protected.

What we see with Rodgers over the past three seasons is a drop in his ability to play quarterback.

The Jets quarterbacks had a 2.4 touchdown pass percentage and a 2.2 interceptions percentage in 2022. The Jets QBR was less than 36.

What everything tells us is that on paper is that the Jets are getting a quarterback in decline, who while might throw more touchdowns, is going to turn the ball over just as much. By himself, he doesn't move the needle enough to give them 2nd place in the AFC east.

The problem is none of the teams outside the Bill's are good enough to say they're better than 3rd in the division on paper. Those who say other wise are projecting favoritism and bias.
